Notes: Malignant epithelioid schwannoma is a well-defined entity. However epithelioid tumours arising other than in a nerve trunk, in a benign nerve sheath tumour or in neurofibromatosis are problematical. We describe a case of a nodular tumour of the cheek which recurred twice without metastasis. Light microscopy showed an amelanotic epithelioid tumour. Immunohistology showed positive staining for vimentin and S100 protein and electron microscopy showed distinctive appearances suggestive of schwannoma. We discuss the differential diagnosis of the tumour, compare it with reported tumours resembling both melanoma and schwannoma and conclude that this may be a further example of the distinctive tumour reported as ‘malignant epithelioid schwannoma of superficial soft tissues’.

Notes: Limiting dilution analysis was performed in the presence of interleukin 2 (IL-2) on lymphocytes isolated from the synovial fluid (SF) and peripheral blood (PB) of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and PB of normal donors. Clones of theses ‘spontaneously’ IL-2-responsive cells from PB and SF were compared for their reactivity with component of the extracellular matrix (i.e. native or denatured type I or type II Collagen and proteoglycan). It was determined that all clones from both PB and SF were activated to produce interferon (IFN) in the presence of any of the connective tissue components (CTC) Clones derived from normal PH behaved in a similar fashion hut produced lower IFN-γ levels There was a synergy between the CTC and serum or plasma fibronectin, which was more apparent when soluble CTC were used as the stimuli rather than immobilized CTC. The fibronectin alone was unable to induce 1FN-γ production under any of the conditions tested (i.e. soluble or immobilized). These results demonstrate that clones of IL-2-responsivc T cells can be activated by interactions with connective tissue components lo produce IFN

Notes: Summary Arrays of open-pollinated seeds were assayed for allozyme polymorphisms at ten loci (Aat2, Est1, G6pd, Idh, Mdh2, Mdh3, Pgm, Sod, 6Pgd1, 6Pgd2) to obtain estimates of the outcrossing rate and assess multilocus association in a natural population of coastal Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. The allele frequencies in the samples of adult trees and pollen-gamete pool were similar. Maximum-likelihood estimators of the outcrossing rate for individual loci and two multilocus models were derived using counting methods. The single-locus maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) of the outcrossing rate were significantly heterogeneous; they varied over a more than two-fold range from 0.404 to 0.935, with an average MLE of 0.741. Both multilocus MLEs of the outcrossing rate were 0.887. The sample of trees was in random mating equilibrium when assessed on a pairwise-locus basis using Burrows' composite measure of gametic disequilibrium, with one exception (Mdh2 Sod) that was attributable to a rare “gametic” class. In the sample of pollen gametes, 5 of the 45 pairwise-locus associations were nominally significant at the 0.05 level: Idh Est1, Mdh2 Sod, Aat2 Est1, Aat2 Mdh3, and Est1 Mdh3. These apparent associations were attributable in most cases to the relative excess of uncommon or rare paternal gametes of discernibly outcrossed embryos. An additional two-locus association was identified for Mdh2 Pgm which was marginally significant for the major partition of the contingency table that excluded paternal gametes with the rare allele Mdh2 2 .

Notes: Summary In a representative survey of 1000 elderly men and women aged over 65 years living in their own homes, assessments have been made of flexibility measured as range of shoulder abduction in addition to health status, psychological well-being and reported customary activity. The results for shoulder abduction were approximately normally distributed and the mean values (±1 standard deviation) were as follows: — in men aged 65–74 years, 129 (±14)° and aged over 74 years, 121 (±19)°; in women aged 65–74 years, 124 (±19)° and aged over 74 years, 114 (±22)°. These mean values are about 30° less than those accepted for younger subjects. Nearly half the distribution falls below the accepted threshold level of 120° for adequate function. There were significant effects of sex and age (P〈0.001); women had poorer flexibility and the reduction with age amounted to 10° per decade. Multiple regression analysis showed that the effect of age was accounted for in part by health, strength and customary use. The effects of use were most marked in those with some disability. This suggests that maintained or increased use could offset some of the age-related loss of the range of shoulder movement.

Notes: We present in this paper a general formulation for shallow water equations which is capable of solving problems of induced harbour oscillation, tidal flow, tsunami propagation, dispersion of pollutant, etc.The shallow water equations are written in a novel fully conservative form. The solution algorithm is based on an explicit time integration procedure which exploits the conservative properties of the governing equations and incorporates accurate treatment of convective terms without introduction of artificial damping. Its accuracy and low cost of computation make it attractive vis-à-vis existing procedures.

Notes: A multigrid algorithm for implementation on unstructured meshes is proposed. The algorithm uses a sequence of unnested grids and requires the development of efficient inter-grid interpolation procedures. It is demonstrated how elliptic problems can be solved in this fashion by using Jacobi smoothers.

Notes: We present the extension of flux-corrected transport (FCT) schemes to unstructured grids. The spatial discretization is performed via finite elements. In particular, we have chosen triangular elements in two dimensions. The limiting procedure is based on Zalesak's extension to more than one dimension of the FCT schemes developed by Boris and Book. The resulting scheme, FEM-FCT, is capable of resolving moving and stationary shocks within two elements, and several examples are given that demonstrate the accuracy attainable, even for complicated geometries.

Notes: An artificial viscosity suitable for use in the simulation of multidimensional high-speed compressible flows by the finite element method is proposed. The form adopted is a consistent extension of the method due to Lapidus.
