Notes: Abstract: We have studied the ganglioside content and pattern of synaptic vesicles isolated from the electric organs of two species of Torpedinidae, Torpedo californica and Torpedo marmorata. The ganglioside concentrations were high relative to protein content (77 and 58 μg of N-acetylneuraminic acid/ mg of protein, respectively), owing to the low protein-to-lipid ratio; however, they were also appreciable in relation to phospholipid (15.6 and 10.0 μg, of N-acetylneuraminic acid/ mg of phospholipid). The fact that a membrane fraction that separated from synaptic vesicles of T. californica on a controlled-pore glass-bead column and constituted the main potential source of contamination in this preparation had a lower ganglioside content and a different TLC pattern than synaptic vesicles indicated the relatively high purity of the latter. Most of the gangliosides from synaptic vesicles of both species migrated on TLC in the vicinity of standards with three or more sialic acids. Synaptosomes from T. marmorata had a higher lipid N-acetylneuraminic acid/phospholipid ratio and a different TLC pattern than synaptic vesicles. Considering these results and other data appearing recently in the literature, we suggest that reexamination of synaptic vesicles from mammalian brain for the possible presence of gangliosides is warranted.

Notes: Abstract The rate ofChlamydia trachomatis infection was determined in three populations in Tahiti by means of a direct immunofluorescence test performed in specimens, tissue culture and detection of chlamydial antibody in serum specimens using a single-serotype indirect immunofluorescence test.Chlamydia trachomatis was recovered in 53 % of 53 bar girls, 24 % of 75 women attending a public maternity clinic for routine care, and 37 % of 71 men attending a sexually transmitted disease clinic with acute or subacute urethritis. The presence of chlamydial antibody in a high proportion of the groups studied confirmed the high frequency of chlamydial infections (62.3 %, 66.6 % and 83.1 % respectively).Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection was often associated with chlamydial infection in both bar girls and men with urethritis (11.4 % and 18.3 % respectively). With regard to clinical manifestations, 58.3 % (7/12) of bar girls and 23.2 % (10/43) women at the maternity clinic without clinical complaints were found to beChlamydia trachomatis-positive. The presence ofChlamydia trachomatis in these asymptomatic persons highlights their important role in spread of this organism in Tahiti. The findings indicate that routine testing forChlamydia trachomatis is warranted in patients attending the sexually transmitted disease and public maternity clinics in Tahiti.

Notes: Abstract The injection of polyacrylamide gel (Bio Gel P-4, 200–400 mesh) into the subcutaneous area of mice, induced an inflammatory reaction which was characterized by the migration of leukocytes (mainly neutrophils) from the blood vessels towards the polyacrylamide gel. A rapid protein accumulation was observed during the migration of cells towards the inflamed site. Neutrophils released some pro-inflammatory lipids (prostaglandins, leukotriene B4) and lysozyme, these products were assayed in the granuloma exudate at various times of the granuloma formation. In our experimental inflammatory model, the results suggest that neutrophils that are attracted by the polyacrylamide gel produce eicosanoids and lysozyme, which could act synergistically to potentiate cell migration and protein accumulation in the inflamed site.

Notes: During terminal differentiation of lens epithelial cells into fiber cells, nuclei become pycnotic and DNA degradation occurs. We investigated the putative role in this process of an endogenous DNAase. After incubation of isolated nuclei of both cell types at 37°C, DNAase activity was revealed by DNA size analysis on 0.3-1% neutral and alkaline agarose, one- and two-dimensional gels. This DNAase activity is more prominent in lens fiber nuclei than in epithelial nuclei at all the embryonic stages probably because of a preexisting higher concentration of divalent cations in the former. This activity is calcium or magnesium dependent in both types of nuclei.

Notes: Adult female locusts were reared on wheat seedlings (experimental wheat) containing more than 97% of 9,10-cyclopropyl sterols and Δ8-sterols and less than 2% of Δ5-sterols. These insects showed a dramatic decrease in their cholesterol, cholestanol and Δ7-cholestanol content compared with control insects. These changes were more dramatic for steryl esters than for free sterols. Similar results were observed in eggs laid by the insects fed on experimental wheat. The decrease in Δ5-, Δ0- and Δ7-sterols in insects reared on experimental wheat was compensated by a marked accumulation of Δ8-sterols and 9β, 19-cyclopropyl sterols in the free sterol fraction and especially in the steryl ester fractions. The ecdysteroid content of eggs laid by experimental female insects was reduced by up to 80% compared with controls. These and other results suggest that the dietary 9β, 19-cyclopropyl sterols and Δ8-sterols cannot be used by Locusta in place of Δ5-sterols for ecdysteroid biosynthesis. To give support to this hypothesis, the experimental wheat was supplemented with various sterols before being presented to the insects immediately after the first egg laying. When cholesterol, sitosterol, or cholestanol were used as supplements, there was a complete recovery of the ecdysteroid titer in the eggs, a disappearance of 9β, 19-cyclopropyl sterols, and a restoration of the cholesterol content in both the animals and the eggs. Stigmasterol, stigmastanol, and ergosterol were much less efficient in reversing the effects of the experimental wheat. As expected, 9β, 19-cyclopropyl sterols were totally ineffective. These results are discussed in the light of our information on the role played by sterols in insect development and on the structural features required by the sterols to fulfill their role.
