Notes: Summary An overlapping distribution of catecholamine-containing cells and proenkephaline—A derived peptide-containing neurons have been identified in the rat medulla oblongata. However, it is not evident whether the coexistence of these bioactive substances occurs in the same neurons or not. Therefore, we examined the coexistence of catecholamine and methionine-enkephalin-Arg6-Gly7-Leu8 (MEAGL), a proenkephaline—A derived peptide, using a combination of histofluorescence and peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) immunohistochemical (modified formaldehyde-glutalaldehyde (Faglu)) methods on the same tissue sections. We found one third of A1/C1 catecholamine fluorescent cells show MEAGL-like immunoreactivity.

Notes: Abstract The thickening process of polyethylene single crystals was simulated with computer by the Monte Carlo method. According to the experimental results in the previous report, the time dependence of the long period changed greatly with annealing temperature; at lower temperatures the long period increased gradually, while at high temperatures the long period rapidly increased at a very early stage of annealing and then increased gradually after passing through a plateau. Through computer simulation, it was shown that such a great change in the time dependence of the long period with annealing temperature can be explained by combining two mechanisms: (A) sliding diffusion of molecular segments along the chain axis and (B) local melt-recrystallization (namely, local melting followed by recystallization).

Notes: Abstract An isotope exchange method for the speciative determination of phosphorus (PO 4 3− , PO 3 3− and total P) in natural water samples is proposed by using the exchange system of moly bdophosphate in the aqueous phase and tetraphenylarsonium molybdophosophate in the organic phase. In this exchange system, only PO 4 3− exchanges and is determined. When the sample water is treated with Br2 water in advance, the amount of PO 4 3− +PO 3 3− can be obtained. When the sample is treated with H2SO4 and HNO3, then the amount of total P can be determined.

Notes: Summary A series of plastic strain controlled cyclic tests was performed to facilitate the modelling of cyclic plasticity under general multiaxial loading conditions. The tests were carried out by applying combined axial force and torque to thin-walled tubular specimens of type 316 stainless steel at room temperature. Torsional and circular cycles of the equivalent plastic strain amplitude (von Mises type) ofΔe p /2=0.1, 0.2 and 0.4% were specified. The results showed that the cyclic hardening under the circular cycles is 1.5–1.8 times as large as that under the torsional cycles of the same value ofΔe p /2 in the saturated state. It was also observed that, in the case of torsional cycles, these saturated values are not affected by the sequence of plastic strain cycles in the past, while in the case of circular cycles, they are affected by the cycles of larger amplitudes. Furthermore, it was elucidated that this memory effect depends only on the cycles of the largest amplitude in the past.

Notes: Summary High resolution scanning electron microscopy revealed that the basic unit of the paracrystalline network in squash prolamellar body is a tetrapodal structure, which has four short tubular arms meeting at one point with equal angle. Fractured faces of the prolamellar bodies displayed three lattice forms; hexagonal, square and zigzag (distorted hexagonal) lattices. Tilting observations of the ultrathin sections, together with scanning electron microscope observations, showed that the paracrystalline tubular network in the squash prolamellar body is of zincblende-type. A pentagonal configuration of the network was sometimes observed. Many prolamellar bodies were also very often observed, which displayed two or three different lattice forms in a single prolamellar body. It became evident from these observations that most, if not all, of the prolamellar bodies in the squash etioplasts are paracrystalline network of spinel-type twin which is composed of two or more domains of zincblende-type. We propose a three dimensional model of the squash prolamellar body in which five paracrystal domains of zincblende-type are assembled around a pentagonal column at the center and connected by boundary lattice layers of wurtzite-type.
