Notes: Abstract We use detailed-balance considerations to relate the frequency-dependent polarization of atomic fluorescence excited by broad-band radiation to the polarization properties of the collision-induced fluorescence line excited by narrow-band radiation. The polarization of the fluorescence in the first case must display a change when the detected frequency is tuned outside the bandwidth, due to the contribution of Rayleigh scattering. In the special case of adiabatic reorientation followed by emission in the quasistatic wing of the spectral line, we derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent polarization in terms of the contributions to the quasistatic profile from the various interatomic difference potentials.

Notes: Abstract The statistical properties of the random events that correspond to the emission or the detection of a photon spontaneously emitted by a single atom are discussed. This statistics constitutes a full and nontrivial solution of the stochastic theory of random events. The results are most explicit for an atom with two relevant states. The formalism is also generalized to atomic models with nondegenerate states or with more than one driven transition.

Notes: Abstract The polarization properties of excited alkali atoms having suffered half collisions with noble gas atoms following excitation by nonresonant photon absorption during a strong collision, are investigated. On the basis of a semiclassical perturbation treatment of the density matrix up to second order in the driving field a general expression for the polarization dependent intensity of the emitted alkali fluorescence is derived. Assuming quasistatic excitation of the collision complex and considering reorientation of the orbital and spin electronic angular momenta within a cut off radius, explicit results for the polarization degrees are presented and discussed, depending on the initial molecular excited state and coupling case.
