Notes: The magnetic properties of the M-mica intercalation compounds (M=Mn,Fe,Co, and Ni) in which M elements form a two-dimensional lattice between mica layers have been investigated. The content of the intercalated M element, x, was varied up to about 22 wt. %, which is about 81% with respect to the upper limit of x. The ac susceptibility measurements revealed the magnetic ordering around 10 K for the Fe- (x≥8.0 wt. %), Co- (x≥7.4 wt. %), and Ni-mica intercalation compounds, but did not for the Mn-mica. These magnetic orders are considered to be the two-dimensional ones, caused from the intralayer superexchange interaction between M2+ (and Fe3+) ions.

Notes: Summary We simultaneously recorded respiration and pupil size in six normal subjects with an age range of 23–40 years (mean=30.1), to study the relationship between the respiratory rhythm and changes in pupil size. In all subjects, respiratory fluctuations of the pupil (inspiratory mydriasis and expiratory miosis) were observed during normal spontaneous respirations. The amplitude of these pupillary changes was closely proportional to the tidal volume.

Notes: Summary A case of neurofibromatosis with spinal paralysis due to arteriovenous fistula is reported. Preoperatively, the appropriate diagnosis was missed because angiography had not been performed. Post-operative angiography disclosed that an arteriovenous fistula formed a tumor-like mass, and that a part of the mass had invaded the spinal canal, compressing the spinal cord. It is concluded that the possibility of an arteriovenous fistula should be kept in mind in neurofibromatosis patients with spinal cord symptoms.

Notes: Summary This paper reports the results of a radiological population study on the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in both the cervical and the thoracic spine among Japanese. The study was carried out in the Yachiho-mura district in the central part of Japan, where 5074 people were living. X-ray examinations were made of 1058 of the people; there were 440 men and 618 women, 50 or more years of age. The roentgenograms showed 34 cases of OPLL in the cervical spine (3.2%): 19 men (4.3%) and 15 women (2.4%). The condition was most frequently observed at the level of C-4. Radiological classification showed 18 cases of the segmental type, 11 of the continuous type, and five of a mixed type. There were eight cases of OPLL in the thoracic spine (0.8%), four in men (0.9%) and four in women (0.6%). OPLL in the thoracic spine was most frequently observed at the midthoracic levels. All eight cases showed a continuous type of ossification. There were three subjects with OPLL in both the cervical and the thoracic spine. Therefore, the number of subjects with OPLL in either the cervical or the thoracic spine was 39 (3.7%) total.

Notes: Summary Incorporation of chinoform-ferric chelate was demonstrable in cultured neural retinal cells of chick embryos after 1 h of incubation, and the lipid peroxide level in the cells was increased strikingly 1 h thereafter. On the other hand, free ferric ions were scarcely incorporated into the cells, and a significant increase in the lipid peroxide level in the cells was not observed. These data indicate that chinoform is carrier of iron for its passage through cell membranes and that the incorporated iron induces lipid peroxidation which in turn leads to neural cell degeneration.
