Notes: A combined numerical and analytical study is presented of the linear stability problem for resistive tearing modes in the presence of perpendicular and parallel equilibrium flows. Detailed information is given about growth rates and the shape of the marginal stability curve. In the case of purely perpendicular flows, a region in parameter space is found where the growth rate is complex, and the region of instability is larger than previously recognized. An exact analytic solution is found for parallel flows when the plasma response is dominated by viscous forces.

Notes: Abstract. The number of circulating haemocytes in crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana, was reduced after injection of yeast cell walls (Zymosan) into the animals. Crayfish harbouring the parasitic fungus A. astaci as a ‘latent’ infection in melanized areas in the cuticle died due to unrestricted growth of unmelanized hyphae when they were injected with Zymosan. The β–1,3–gIucan laminaran, introduced into the haemocoel of P. leniusculus harbouring A. astaci hyphae in the cuticle, also caused a decrease in the total haemocyte counts (THC), but these animals survived the treatment and no unmelanized hyphae of A, astaci were found. The recovery of THC was found to be more rapid after laminaran injection than after Zymosan injection, which could explain why laminaran treated crayfish retained their resistance and could combat the A. astaci hyphae in the cuticle. The importance of the number of haemocytes in defence and well-being of crayfish is discussed.

Notes: Substance P (SP) at a concentration of 10−7m significantly increased the number of IgG-producing cells induced by the polyclonal activator Staphylococcus aureus protein A (SpA) in 11 out of 22 cultures of enriched human blood B lymphocytes, in nine cultures SP did not significantly affect the SpA response and in three cultures IgG secretion was decreased in the presence of SP. Stimulation by SP was observed in cultures at days 6 and/or 8. In 3 out of 4 cell cultures depleted of monocytes SP did not affect the cell response to SpA stimulation. SP antagonists inhibited the enhancing effect of SP on B-cell antibody secretion induced by SpA. SP alone did not stimulate B lymphocytes. Neurokinin A (NKA) had similar effects as SP and enhanced the IgG secretion induced by SpA in 5 out of 9 experiments, in two experiments was inactive, and in one decreased the IgG secretion. The effect of SP and NKA on B lymphocytes suggests that the neuropeptides interact with the regulation of the immune response.

Notes: Summary The influence of lung uptake and lung clearance on the disposition of morphine was studied in surgical patients. In the postoperative period morphine was given intravenously by a two-rate infusion regimen. Under steady-state conditions samples of mixed central venous blood (pulmonary artery) and peripheral arterial blood (radial artery) were taken simultaneously and at the same time cardiac output was measured. The concentration differences between venous and arterial blood were used to calculate the extraction ratio of morphine across the lung. In all patients there was marked pulmonary uptake, but the concentration differences in most of them were small under steady-state conditions. The extraction ratio (mean ±SD) across the lung was 0.06±0.10, implying insignificant lung clearance. However, in two patients, both with diabetes mellitus, there was a significant concentration gradient, indicating that the lung could contribute to the total body elimination of morphine. On the other hand, the total clearance was similar in diabetic and nondiabetic patients (1190 and 1150 ml/min, respectively), implying that pulmonary clearance would have no significant influence on the kinetics of morphine. A physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was used to describe the disposition of morphine in postoperative patients. The model allowed simulation of pulmonary diffusion, uptake and elimination and supported conclusions based on model-independent experimental data.

Notes: Summary In a prospective study, 73 patients with erysipelas were studied bacteriologically, serologically and clinically. Pathogenic bacteria were isolated from 41% of the patients. Group G streptococci (GGS) were found as frequently as group A streptococci (GAS), in 12.5% and 15% of patients, respectively.Staphylococcus aureus was isolated in 10%, and streptococci groups B, C and D were isolated from one case each. Raised ASO titres were found among patients with GAS and GGS, while a rise in ADNase B titre was found only in patients with GAS. Patients with GGS tended to be older than other patients. Otherwise no clinical differences were noticed. The infection was located to the lower extremity in 68%. Predisposing factors were observed in 44% of the patients, predominantly local circulatory insufficiency and malignancies. In 55% a possible portal of entry was present. GGS seems to be a common cause of erysipelas, especially among patients older than 50 years.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the superconducting transitions of Y1Ba2Cu3D x O7−x−δ samples where O has been replaced by D=F, S, or Cl andx=0.2-2. No single phase compounds were obtained forx〉0.2. No dramatic increase inT c was registered. Generally the results can be interpreted as a dilution of the highT c “1 2 3” phase by other phases as the dopant concentration increases, ultimately suppressingT c completely. Possibly there is an increase ofT c for an intermediate dopant range,x, in the Cl series.
