Notes: The effectiveness of macrogol and talcum base formulations of a new multi-insect repellent N, N-diethyl phenyl acetamide (DEPA) was studied against Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the laboratory. The efficacy was compared with widely used repellent in India, viz. Dimethylphthalate. Twenty-five per cent DEPA incorporated macrogol ointment and talcum base formulation offered more than 8 h and 6 h protection, as compared to DMP for 3 h and 1 h 30 min, respectively. The ointment was found to be stable as more than 99% DEPA was recovered by gas liquid chromatography after 6 months of storage at room temperature.

Notes: The low-pressure activated reactive evaporation process was used successfully to grow superconducting thin films that were uniform in thickness, free of cracks, voids, spits, and other source-related defects, and with mirror-like surface smoothness. These are important considerations for the practical use of these materials in thin-film form. No post-deposition annealing was carried out. Tc (0) for films on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates is close to 80 K, and the (001) preferred orientation was observed with higher deposition temperatures in the range 550–650 °C. Films on silicon and sapphire substrates were adversely affected by interdiffusion, showing a Tc (0) of 56 and 72 K, respectively.

Notes: Abstract High-temperature sulfidation studies have been carried out on Fe-15Cr-4Al with and without 1% Y in the temperature range 700–1000°C in an H 2-H2 S environment over the sulfur pressure range of 10 −9−10−3 atm. Two-layered and three-layered sulfide scales were observed in both alloys at low and high sulfur pressures, respectively. The pegging phenomenon, similar to that occurring in high-temperature oxidation, across the innermost layer and substrate was observed in the case of the yttrium-containing alloy. Yttrium was found to be associated with aluminum and chromium sulfides. The role of yttrium was more evident at low than at high sulfur pressures and was found to reduce the parabolic rate constants by a factor of about one-half to one-seventh, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The effect of small concentrations of zirconium on the cyclic oxidation behavior of Fe-15Cr-4Al was investigated at 1300°C. The zirconium concentrations studied were 0.2, 0.55, and 1 wt.%. Each cycle consisted of a 1-hr isothermal period followed by 30-min cooling of the sample in air. Nodule formation was observed in higher zirconium-containing alloys, 0.55% and 1% zirconium, and the base alloy. The nodules formed at the corners and edges of the specimen and grew with increasing number of cycles. EDAX and line scans of cross section of oxidized samples demonstrated that the nodules were composed of iron oxides. Suggestions are given regarding the mode of nodule formation. Results show that additions of 0.2% zirconium and 1% yttrium to the base alloy suppress the nodule formation and provide the best resistance to cyclic oxidation.

Notes: Summary The natural product asperlicin is the first nonpeptide antagonist of cholecystokinin isolated from a microbial source. At discovery, production of asperlicin by the original soil isolate ofAspergillus alliaceus was between 15 and 30 mg/l. Selection of natural variants ofA. alliaceus, use of Plackett & Burman and Simplex experimental designs; formulation of synthetic media; amino acid supplementation of production media; analysis of complex nitrogen sources for their amino acid content; evaluation of promising media in fermentors; substitution of glycerol for glucose as a carbon source and rational mutant selection all contributed to titer increases to 〉900 mg/l.

Notes: Summary Using a tumor-model system, differences in the accessory cell capabilities on autoreactive T cells of splenic macrophages from normal and tumor-bearing hosts (TBH) were assessed in the syngeneic mixed lymphocyte reaction. Tumor development caused a drop in autoreactivity. At 0 and 7 days of tumor growth, no drop in reactivity occurred when TBH macrophages were used as accessory cells and L3T4+ autoreactive T cells from normal mice were used as responder cells. However, by day 14, there was a 32% drop in reactivity, and by day 21 only 22% of the T cell reactivity remained when TBH macrophages were used as accessory cells. Alterations in macrophage Ia antigen during tumor growth were first investigated as the potential cause of reduced autoreactivity. Before tumor growth (day 0) 59% of the splenic macrophages were found to be Ia+. Day-7 TBH macrophages showed no difference in Ia antigen expression when compared to day 0 macrophages. However, by day 14, TBH macrophages showed a 9% decrease, and by day 21 they showed a 36% decrease in the number which were Ia+. Concomitant with the decrease in the number of Ia+ cells was a decrease in the density of Ia antigen expression on day-14 and -21 TBH macrophages. In day-14 and -21 TBH macrophages, two populations were seen that were Ia+. The first had a 10%–20% decrease in Ia antigen expression per cell while the second population had a 〉50% drop in Ia antigen expression per cell. By titrating and mixing TBH macrophages with normal host macrophages, we assessed whether they could actively mediate suppression of autoreactive T cells. A titratable suppressive phenomenon was demonstrated using day-21 TBH macrophages. In contrast, day-7 and -14 TBH macrophages titrated with normal host macrophages had no effect on the syngeneic mixed lymphocyte reactivity. Lastly, we investigated whether the macrophage-mediated suppression was caused by increased prostaglandin secretion. Addition of indomethacin to cultures increased autoreactive T cell reactivity stimulated by normal or TBH macrophages (59% and 99% increase, respectively). Although indomethacin reduced suppression mediated by TBH macrophages, autoreactivity did not return to levels induced by untreated or indomethacin-treated cells from a normal host. Taken together, the data suggested that tumor growth modulates the function of macrophage accessory cells with autoreactive T cells in at least two ways: by decreasing Ia antigen expression and by increasing suppressor activity.

Notes: Summary Chloroethylnitrosoureas have been used widely to treat human and experimental animal tumors. We have earlier observed that 〉90% of the mice transplanted with syngeneic tumors survive following treatment with nitrosoureas such as 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) and furthermore, they resist subsequent challenge with the same tumor. The present investigation was initiated to determine the mechanism by which BCNU brings about this effect. Treatment of tumor cell targets in vivo or in vitro with BCNU, increased their susceptibility to macrophage (MØ)-mediated cytotoxicity as measured in a direct cytotoxicity assay or in an antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity (ADCC) assay. In contrast, the antitumor cytotoxicity caused by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), natural killer (NK) cells, or lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells, was not altered following BCNU treatment of tumor targets. Studies were also conducted to investigate the direct effect of BCNU in vivo on various cytotoxic effector cells. For this purpose, MØ, NK, LAK, and CTL activities from BCNU-treated-tumor-bearing mice were screened for cytotoxicity against untreated tumor targets in vitro. It was observed that tumor-specific CTL and LAK cell activity increased in BCNU-treated tumor-bearing mice when compared to untreated controls while the cytotoxic potential of NK cells and MØs was not altered. The present study suggests that antitumor drugs such as BCNU are not only tumoricidal but also selectively act in a variety of ways at both the effector and target cell level, leading to overall enhanced antitumor immunity and high rate of cures from the syngeneic tumor challenge.

Notes: Abstract In the present work angular momenta of the fragments corresponding to132Im,g have been deduced from the radiochemically determined independent isomeric yield ratios and statistical model based analysis in neutron induced fission of235U,239Pu and245Cm and spontaneous fission of252Cf. These data along with similar data on134I, reported earlier from this laboratory, bring out the effects of deformed 66n and spherical 82n shells on fragment angular momentum showing also an inverse correlation of the latter with elemental yields. Quantitative estimates of fragment scission point deformation and the coefficient of change of fragment angular momentum with kinetic/excitation energy have been deduced and are seen to be in good agreement with the expected theoretical estimates.
