Notes: Summary A new glycoprotein of 31,500 dalton, which has a high affinity for ouabain, and is independent of (Na+−K+)-ATPase, was solubilized from transverse tubule membrane and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum complexes (TTM-JSR) of cat cardiac muscle. This protein could be extracted only in small amounts from sarcolemmaplasma membrane (SLM-PL) fragments, suggesting that it indeed originates from the TTM-JSR.

Notes: Abstract Carcinoid tumor of the bile duct is extremely rare. Ten cases have been reported in the literature. This report describes the eleventh case. A 55-year-old woman was hospitalized with biliary stenosis. Sonography (US) and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a tumor in the upper common hepatic duct (CHD). Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography showed extraluminal growth of the tumor. The tumor was resected and histologic examination showed carcinoid tumor of the common hepatic duct.

Notes: Summary Efferent vestibular and cochlear neurons were identified in the rat's brain stem by retrograde labelling with True Blue (TB) or wheat germ agglutinin — horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) injected into the utricle. Such cells were found at the same locations described in 1983 by White and Warr (ipsilateral superior olivary nucleus (LSO), bilateral latero-ventral nucleus of the trapezoid body (LTz) bilateral group E medial and lateral to the genu facialis) and, in addition, bilaterally in the caudal pontine reticular nucleus (CPR) at the level of the descending facial nerve. Cholinergic neurons were identified by counterstaining sections containing TB filled perikarya for (1) acetylcholinesterase (AChE) following pretreatment with diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) or (2) choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), by immunohistochemistry with highly specific monoclonal antibodies. Many, but not all, vestibular efferent cell bodies located in group E were shown to be cholinergic. These and other recently published data suggest that the efferent octavus system may consist of a number of chemically distinct cell groups.

Notes: 1. The effect of cellophane wrap hypertension (WRAP) and hypercholesterolemia (1% cholesterol diet, CHOL) for 4 weeks was assessed on the endothelium-dependent vasodilator response to acetylcholine in conscious rabbits after pharmacological autonomic blockade.2. Dose-response curves for the hindlimb vascular resistance (ear artery pressure/lower aortic blood flow; Doppler flowmeter) and acetylcholine infusion (i.v.) doses were unaltered in sensitivity (ED50) for any of the treatment groups. The range and slope of the curves were significantly altered by WRAP, CHOL or WRAP plus CHOL for acetylcholine and adenosine infusions consistent with medial hypertrophy in resistance vessels and raised serum viscosity.3. The effect of intimai thickening on the response to endothelium derived relaxing factor (EDRF) was tested in dog carotid artery ring segments in vitro 4 weeks after endothelium removal.4. The relaxation responses to acetylcholine (EDRF-dependent) and adenosine or nitroglycerin were not significantly altered by the neo-intima.5. Therefore the response to EDRF released by acetylcholine in resistance vessels was unaltered by hypertension, hypercholesterolemia or both together. Neo-intimal thickening in response to initial endothelium loss does not appear to alter EDRF responses in the carotid artery.

Notes: A method for measuring spatially resolved high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectra for a spatially heterogeneous complex object has been examined by making images of several phantoms. The factors which determine the image quality are discussed from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints. Especially, the effects of field inhomogeneity, originating from magnet inhomogeneity and nonuniform magnetic susceptibility of the object itself, are examined in detail. The indirect spin-spin coupling effect on imaging results is theoretically discussed. Although mathematical treatments are given for three-dimensional objects, actual measurements were performed for spatially limited two-dimensional regions by slicing the three-dimensional objects using a selective excitation technique. The results show that the present method is feasible for practical chemical shift imaging purposes.

Notes: We have investigated the effect on the optical and magnetic properties of adding W or Co to Bi-substituted garnet films sputtered on glass substrates. Adding a small amount (〈1.2 at. %) of W makes the film optically homogeneous. It also increases coercivity more than three times, probably due to wall pinning by W atoms. Adding Co reduces coercivity. On the thin film with added W, we have successfully performed a dynamic thermomagnetic writing with a regular bit shape. This promotes development of magneto-optical memory using garnet sputtered film.

Notes: Summary The association of cleft lip and palate with hemophilia is rare. Recent advances in hematology have made it possible for hemophiliacs to have surgery without problems, using prior administration of anti-hemophilic globulin. The case reported was a hemophilia B patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate. When primary cheiloplasty was carried out at four months of age, there were serious bleeding problems during and after the operation. Palatoplasty was performed at age two and repair of secondary deformity of the cleft lip at age eight. On both occasions a prothrombin complex was administered, and no problem was experienced in either procedure. A ten year follow-up is presented.

Notes: Abstract The cause of the low detection efficiencies of Cherenkov radiation by the liquid scintillation counter was investigated. The detection limit of the liquid scintillation counter was assumed and the increase of counting rates for the increase of refractive index was calculated from Cherenkov photo yields and β-distribution.

Notes: Summary In order to obtain information about the mechanism of the venous drainage in reverse-flow island flaps in the extremities, we dissected 10 radial, 10 peroneal, 10 anterior tibial, and 10 posterior tibial arteries and veins in cadavers. We examined the cutaneous perforators nourishing those flaps, venous valves, communicating branches and collateral branches of the accompaning veins, then calculated whether or not there was a smooth reverse venous flow in relation to the above locational relationship. From these findings, in almost all reverse-flow island flaps, there are some valves so located as to block the reverse venous flow in the accompaning veins. This induces us to consider that some valves, not all, would be incompetent for the reverse venous flow to take place in the reverse-flow flap. In some clinical cases, however, some valves would be so competent as to block the reverse venous flow. A comparison between the radial and the peroneal accompaning vein suggests that the reverse venous flow in the lower extremity is more disturbed than in the upper extremity.
