Notes: Summary Mucous cells in the basal disk of hydra contain a peroxidase-like enzyme allowing specific staining of these cells with substrates for peroxidases. The peroxidase activity provides an excellent marker for foot mucous cell, differentiation and was used to follow the reappearance of footspecific cells during foot regeneration after amputation. By choosing the appropriate either soluble or precipitable substrate the peroxidase reaction was used both for a qualitative and for a quantitative evaluation of foot-specific differentiation in hydra. For histological studies diaminobenzidien was found to be a suitable substrate which forms a dark brown precipitate within the cells containing the peroxidase activity. For a quantitative evaluation of foot regeneration the soluble substrate 2,2-azino-di(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-sulfonic acid-6) ammonium salt was used which after reaction with the enzyme gives rise to a diffusible green reaction product the concentration of which can be measured by its specific absorption at 415 nm. Based on the diffusible enzyme product a new quantitative assay for foot regenration was developed and applied to confirm the effect and specificity of morphogenetic substances which either inhibit or activate foot or head regeneration in hydra.

Notes: Abstract In normal human tissue high concentrations of the neuropeptide head activator are found in the hypothalamus, in the retina, and in the gastro-intestinal tract. Up to 100-fold elevated levels of head activator over neighbouring tissue were found in tumors of the brain, especially in tumors of neural origin like astrocytoma and glioblastoma, but also in meningioma. Coincident with elevated tissue levels, an increased secretion into the general circulation was observed. Elevated levels of head activator in the blood were also observed in patients with tumors in peripheral locations, especially in tumors of gastrointestinal tract and/or of neuroendocrine origin. After tumor removal, the head activator levels in the blood dropped to normal values suggesting a possible role of head activator in neuroendocrine tumorigenesis.

Notes: Summary The capillary gas chromatographic determination of Cr[VI] besides Cr[III] and of Co in Rhine water is described. The previously reported [9] optimized arrangement is used. Detection is performed with an ECD, extraction of the chelates from aqueous solution, pH 3, is carried out with a solid phase extraction system. The detection limits of Cr[VI] and Co are 0.05 ppb and 0.2 ppb, respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The capillary-gas-chromatographic conditions for the determination of trace metals after extraction from aqueous solution are optimized by coupling of capillaries and improvement of injection technique. Different detectors (FID and ECD) are tested. pH range and buffer systems for extraction of metal chelates are discussed.

Verschiedene Detektoren (FID und ECD) werden gestestet. pH-Bereich und Puffersysteme zur Extraktion der Metallchelate werden diskutiert.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Reaktion des Cr(VI) mit Dialkyldithiocarbamaten in saurer wäßriger Lösung wurde untersucht.
Notes: Summary The reaction of Cr(VI) with dialkyldithiocarbamates in acid aqueous solution is investigated. Oxygen-containing Cr(III) chelates were found to be formed as byproducts, except in the case of the fluorinated chelate. For the capillary-gas-chromatographic determination of Cr(VI) di(trifluoroethyl)dithiocarbamate was suitable, with restriction also diethyldithiocarbamate. The determination of Cr(VI) was possible at the lower ppb-level with di(trifluoroethyl) dithiocarbamate.
