Notes: The construction of the ATLAS superconducting heavy-ion linear accelerator is complete. The first beam acceleration occurred on March 22, 1985. The first experiment with the ATLAS linac took place during the week of October 7, 1985. The project was completed on time and within budget. Initial system performance has met our expectations.

Notes: A superconducting resonant cavity containing a 10-cm active length, interdigital accelerating structure has been demonstrated to work at accelerating gradients above 5 MV/m. The 48.5-MHz, four-gap accelerating structure is designed for particle velocities 0.007c≤V≤0.014c, and is the first of several structures intended to form a low-velocity positive-ion injector linac for the ATLAS accelerator.

Notes: A superconducting (SC) rf cavity has been operated in the presence of an external magnetic field up to 2.4 kG. Measurements on the 48.5-MHz cavity were performed at 4.2 K. The external field was produced by an unshielded 60-kG superconducting solenoid 5.8 cm from the cavity. No degradation of cavity Q was observed for fields on the outer surface of the cavity up to 1240 G. This result is consistent with no flux penetration of the cavity surface for fields up to the first critical field of niobium at 4.2 K, and shows that strong focusing elements with large fringing magnetic fields may be placed immediately next to Nb SC accelerating structures without causing performance degradation.

Notes: Cylindrical rods of YBa2Cu3O7−δ from 0.6 to 1.9 mm in diameter and up to 565 mm long have been used as the center conductor of a half-wave resonant coaxial line. The resonant line can be immersed in liquid nitrogen, which provides excellent cooling of the current-carrying superconducting surface, even in the presence of substantial rf losses. Such superconducting resonant lines have been operated at frequencies of a few hundred MHz and at rf surface magnetic fields up to 150 G at 77 K.
