Notes: Abstract The low frequency spatio-temporal intraseasonal evolution of monsoon rainfall over India is studied by considering the pentad rainfall averages taken over 2.5° wide and 5.0° long blocks lying across the central longitudinal and latitudinal transacts. The time-latitude cross sections show south to north progressions of rainfall anomalies with a recurrence period of about 40 days. The progressions show considerable inter-annual and intra-seasonal variation in frequency, amplitude and rate of progression. The extended empirical orthogonal function analysis shows that the first two most important functions correspond to this northward progression of rain anomalies recurring after an interval of about 40 days. The rate of progression of anomalies is about 0.5° Lat./day. The time-longitude cross sections show the movement of rainfall anomalies towards both directions east and the west, with slight preference towards the east. The importance of these signals in rainfall forecasting is foreseen.

Notes: Summary We studied mice from five strains (BALB/c, C3H/HeSnJ, C57BL/6J, Csb and 129/ReJ) at two ages (young, 10±1 weeks; and old, 67±3 weeks) for the induction of sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs) in vivo by methyl nitrosourea (MNU). The SCE frequency is genotype-specific. The F1 phenotype resembles the ‘low’ responding parent. SCE induction is significantly lower in the older animals of each strain than their younger counterparts, and the reduction of SCE/cell with old age is strain-specific. A general explanation for these results must include strain differences in relative mutagenic sensitivity, genotype-specific pattern of reduction in DNA repair and other such factors affecting SCE formation, with old age.

Notes: Summary An analysis of the role of the nonpair forces in the lattice dynamics of s.p. bonded h.c.p. metalsviz. Mg and Zn has been presented. The total energy has been extended up to third order in the electron-ion pseudopotential. The dynamical matrix contains the terms arising from central pairwise interactions between the ions as well as contributions due to sums of nonpair three-body forces. Such forces, arising from the inclusion of third-order terms, are of short-range nature and possess the character of tensor forces. It is concluded that the nonpair three-body interaction is necessary for explaining the lattice dynamics of h.c.p. metals. The theoretical dispersion curves are compared with the experimental data. Good agreement is found between the computed and experimental results along the symmetry directions.

Notes: A rigorous approach is discussed for solving the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation in a multiply-connected domain consisting of a ring of N circles distributed symmetrically within a closed space. The outer boundary has been taken to be such that the system as a whole has N-fold rotational symmetry. The Dirichlet boundary condition has been satisfied exactly at the outer as well as at each of the inner edges, using the addition theorems for the cylindrical Bessel functions in conjugation with the Fourier expansions. Numerical results, showing spatial configurational interference, are presented for the lowest cutoff value of the symmetric mode as a function of separation between centers of two inner circles, in the case N=2 with circular outer boundary. The application of the method to various problems of physics and engineering is enunciated.

Notes: We have analysed the factors which regulate MHC class II expression in mouse T cell lines. Two such lines, BW 5147 and PLT-24.2, were used in this study. Using 5-azacytidine (5 AzaC) we have shown that hypomethylation of DNA can induce class II antigen synthesis in BW 5147. The expression of class II in PLT-24.2 cells seems to be under a different control mechanism. Southern blot analysis of I-Aβ gene in PLT-24.2 suggests that the expression of class II in this cell line is probably the outcome of a gene rearrangement. We hypothesise that insertion of viral long terminal repeats (LTR) next to the class II genes in transformed T cell lines can act as a promoter for the expression of class II antigens.

Notes: Electron-beam deposited films of phosphosilicate (PSG) have been investigated as dielectrics for the encapsulation of Si-implanted GaAs for the purpose of post-implant annealing. The processing parameters that were optimized included the thickness of PSG film, the substrate temperature, and the annealing time and temperature. PSG films deposited at temperatures ≥300 °C showed no signs of deterioration up to temperatures in excess of 900 °C for 30-min anneals carried out in a forming gas and/or nitrogen ambient. Depth profiles in excellent agreement with the Lindhard–Scharff–Schiott curves were obtained with 1000-A(ring)-thick films when annealed at 850 °C for 30 min. The diffusion coefficient of implanted silicon was found to be an order of magnitude smaller for the PSG films than that for the conventional plasma assisted chemical vapor deposited SiO2 films at 850 °C.

Notes: A field study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of the high frequency seismic reflection technique for mapping of shallow and irregular bedrock. Bedrock reflections were obtained using a hammer source with both in-line and common offset field layouts. The recording equipment included 12-channel enhancement seismographs, 28 Hz vertical geo-phones and a microcomputer. The latter increased the overall versatility of the seismic system.Field sites for this study are typical of the geological settings of the tin mining areas of Malaysia. The topographical ‘lows’ of the irregular bedrock control the localization of tin ore. The subsurface geology consists of a thin low velocity layer (± 300 m/s) overlying the compact overburden (± 1700 m/s) which in turn lies on bedrock. This paper discusses various criteria for designing an optimum window for obtaining usable reflections between the first arrival and the leading edge of the ground roll cone.Detailed mapping of the overburden and the bedrock interface by the reflection method can be useful in delineating areas for exploratory drilling and for optimum planning of mining operations.

Notes: Room-temperature integrated photoluminescence of Si-implanted n-type and semi-insulating wafers of single-crystal InP has been investigated as a technique for characterizing the quality of ion-implanted and annealed material. It was found that the intensity of the luminescence is a good indicator of the quality of the annealed samples. Using both rapid thermal annealing and conventional furnace annealing, not only was it possible to monitor the progressive activation of the implanted impurities, but we were also able to characterize the degradation occurring in the InP crystal due to the thermal exposure and to compare the results using different methods of surface protection. Combined with progressive wet etching of the implanted layers, it was also possible to use the photoluminescence response to spatially profile the activation and the degradation of the wafers. The results suggest that annealing, in general, is not able to restore the quality of the original unimplanted semiconductor and that even short transient anneal cycles can lead to detectable thermally induced material degradation, which extends many micrometers into the InP.
