    Notes: Experiments were conducted using a 1.0641 μ laser to measure the spectral profiles of second harmonic emissions from laser plasmas produced on planar, slab targets of carbon, aluminum, and copper at laser intensities varying from 2×1012 to 9×1013 W/cm2. It is observed and confirmed that the contribution to spectral energy due to parametric decay is significant and can exceed that due to resonance absorption under certain experimental conditions.

    Notes: The equations for the free expansion of a two-ion, two-temperature, noncollisional, isothermal, and quasineutral plasma are derived and solved using a self-similar technique. The hydrodynamic variables are determined by four independent parameters, viz., α, the relative charge to mass ratio of the two ions; N10, the initial concentration of the main ion; τ, the temperature ratio of the hot and cold electrons; and ρ, the initial concentration ratio of the cold and hot electrons. The formation of an ion front in the numerically dominant species is predicted for the first time even under the quasineutral and isothermal assumptions. A necessary condition for the breakdown of the self-similar solution is derived. The location of the ion front and the point where the solution breaks down are tabulated as a function of the four parameters and the results are discussed. The expression for the normalized ion current, taking into account the flux limitation under the free-streaming limit, is derived. The expressions for the mass, momentum, and energy ablation are also derived and the relevant data are discussed with reference to laser–plasma interaction.

    Notes: Equations for the stimulated Raman sidescattering from a laser-produced plasma with an exponential density profile have been derived. They have been solved by using the WKB method, and the resulting Bohr–Sommerfeld condition has been solved numerically for the growth rates of the absolute instability and the frequency shifts as a function of the laser intensity, the density gradient scale length, and the plasma frequency. The results have been discussed and compared with the previously reported work on the plasma with linear density profile. Instability growth rates are found to be nearly the same for both cases, except for very steep density profiles, for which the difference can become appreciable. The two theories, one of which considers a hot plasma, lead to significantly different frequency shifts. It is found that, for high laser powers, the instability persists even for very steep profiles. Furthermore, for such profiles the maximum of the growth rate occurs far away from the quarter critical layer, for moderately high power lasers.

    Notes: It is known that the propagation characteristics of elastic waves are influenced by the nature of biasing stress distributions in the propagating medium. A knowledge of the magnitude of such effects plays an important role in improving the performance and long term aging characteristics of surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices. Generally, SAW devices employ thin platelike structures as the propagating medium of surface waves. The biasing deformation of such structures due to externally applied forces can be decomposed into extensional and flexural deformations which can have substantially different effects on the change in the time delay between two observations points. This paper describes a study of the fractional change in the time delay of surface waves due to the stress components in terms of which a general deformation can be expressed. The information on the biasing state of thin disks has been employed in a previously reported perturbation procedure for equations of motion for small dynamic field superposed on a static bias. Computational results have been obtained for fractional changes in the time delay of surface waves in crystalline quartz of various orientations and propagation directions due to many simple stress systems in thin disks. We have considered the cases of flexural deformation of rectangular plates due to cylindrical bending and disks subjected to normal pressures, as well as extensional deformation due to a pair of forces acting diametrically on a circular disk along various azimuthal angles. Experimental results have been obtained for the moment-frequency effect on circular ST-cut quartz disks and the force-frequency effects on both singly, as well as doubly rotated quartz disks. Good agreement has been obtained between the theoretical predictions and experimental measurements.

    Notes: Abstract Experiments on the reaction:3He+3He→4He+2He using a single four detector telescope have shown evidence for the production of deuteron pulses, consistent with the2He→2H+e++v fusion reaction in the final state. New measurements on the same reaction using improved techniques viz.A) a windowless3He gas target andB) α- d correlation detection with 5 ns resolving time and antipileup circuitry have been performed. Calibrations were obtained from the7Li+3He→2H+4He+4He reaction spectra. The correlation angles were 30° and 97° for the alphas and deuterons respectively. Deuteron pulses have been observed, correlated with alpha particles. A cross section of (1.7 ±0.5)nbsr−1MeV−1 was obtained consistent with previous measurements using a single telescope.

    Notes: Abstract U, B, V photometry of the eclipsing binary DX Aqr has been presented for the first time. The period of the system comes out to be nearly half the period given by Strohmeier (1966) and a value of Od.472502 has been determined. The colour of the system has been discussed. The primary eclipse is a total occulation. The orbit seems to be eccentric. The system belongs to Algol type. DX Aqr may be a very complicated system. The present results are considerably different from those of earlier investigations.

    Notes: Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using Ce(IV) as initiator in aqueous nitric acid solution in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate (NaLS) has been studied kinetically at a temperature range of 25-35°C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) increases with increasing concentration of NaLS, and it was also proportional to [MMA]2; but, in the presence of NaLS, the change of Rp with respect to [Ce(IV)] and [H+] were not linear and similarly the rate of Ce(IV) disappearance was not proportional to its original concentration. The overall activation energy of the polymerization process in presence of 0.01M NaLS was found to decrease by ∼ 7.0 kcal mol-1. The monomer-micelle association constant has been calculated to be 5.135 × 104 mol-1 L. The polymer obtained in surfactant medium is sparingly soluble in benzene and DMSO. From infrared spectra clear evidence of vinyl polymerization was obtained.
