    Notes: Summary Two experiments investigated the effects of noise on the processing of global shape and local detail. Both experiments showed that noise improved ordered recall of local features but impaired recall of global shape, although the extent of the effect of noise was influenced by the size of the compound stimuli. Noise did not produce the same effects as those obtained when attention is manipulated by instructions, and it is possible that noise produced a change in the more passive aspect of attention rather than altering the active allocation of attentional resources.

    Notes: Abstract Production of extracellular dissolved organic substances by cultures of the marine coccolithophorid Hymenomonas carterae SMBA 254 was investigated by the 14C-tracer technique. In 4 h incubations, extracellular 14C production represented 20 to 64% of 14C incorporation into cell material for cultures nearing, or during stationary growth; for rapidly growing cultures with relatively low cell densities the 14C-production was only 4 to 10% of incorporation. Intra-and extra-cellular material was fractionated by ion-exchange membrane electrodialysis. Ionic compounds accounted for 40 to 60% of extracellular material; in contrast only 16 to 27% of intracelular metabolites were in this category. Of a range of methods which were investigated, separation of compounds by gel-filtration in conjunction with two-dimensional thin-layer chromatography proved most effective. Up to 80% of extracellular material was of less than 1 800 mol. wt and included carbohydrates and amino acids, with glutamic acid predominating. The intracellular material was more heterogeneous, with a substantially greater proportion of high molecular weight material. The quite distinct compositions show clearly that extracellular production observed in these experiments arose through excretion and was not attributable to cell lysis.

    Notes: Abstract Diel patterns of 14C-bicarbonate incorporation in〉5 μm algal communities were compared with those in cyanobacterial populations of Synechococcus spp. (0.6 to 1.0 μm), collected from the surface and/or chlorophyll maximum at three stations in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (a neritic front; in Warm-Core Eddy 84-E; and Wilkinson's Basin) from 21 July to 8 August, 1984. Cell constituents were chemically separated into four fractions: lipids, low molecular weight (LMW) metabolites, polysaccharides/nucleic acids, and proteins. The in situ diel pattern of 14C assimilation was virtually the same for 〉5 μm algal communities adapted to different environments. Protein synthesis appeared to continue at a reduced rate at night using energy derived from the catabolism of polysaccharides and the mobilization of LMW compounds. Synechococcus spp. populations exhibited inherent physiological differences in their in situ diel pattern of carbon fixation from that in〉5 μm algal communities taken from the same water mass. There was no nighttime protein-synthesis in Synechococcus spp. The relative proportion of 14C-protein remained constant over night, while that of 14C-polysaccharides/nucleic acids declined and that of labelled LMW metabolites increased. Daytime light-intensity manipulations did not alter the diel pattern of carbon fixation in any of the〉5 μm algal assemblages, while changes in the carbon metabolism of surface and shadeadapted Synechococcus spp. populations could be rapidly induced by altering the light intensity.

    Notes: Summary Linkage data, using the polymorphic markers 52A (DXS51), F9, 4D-8(DXS98), and St14(DXS52), are presented from 14 fragile X pedigrees and from 7 normal pedigrees derived from the collection of the Centre d'Étude du Polymorphisme Humaine. A multipoint linkage analysis indicates that the most probable order of these four loci in normal families is DXS51-F9-DXS98-DXS52. Recombination frequencies ( $$\hat \theta $$ ) corresponding to maximum LOD scores ( $$\hat Z$$ ) were obtained by two-point linkage analysis for a nuber of linkage groups, including: DXS51-F9 ( $$\hat Z$$ =5.94, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.03), F9-DXS98 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.51, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.26), F9-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.84, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.27), and DXS98-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.32, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.20). A multipoint linkage analysis of these loci, including the fragile X locus, was also performed for the fragile X population and the data support the relative order (DSX51, F9, DXS98)-FRAXA-DXS52. Recombination frequencies and maximum LOD scores, which again were derived from two-point linkage analyses, were obtained for the linkage groups DXS51-F9 ( $$\hat Z$$ =9.96, $$\hat \theta $$ =0) and F9-DXS52 ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.07, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.45), as well as for the groups DXS51-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =2.42, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.15), F9-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =1.30, $$\hat \theta $$ =0.18), DXS98-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =0.05 $$\hat \theta $$ =0.36), and DXS52-FRAXA ( $$\hat Z$$ =2.42 $$\hat \theta $$ =0.15). The linkage data was further tested for the presence of genetic heterogeneity both within and between the fragile X and normal families for the intervals DXS51-F9, F9-DXS52, F9-FRAXA, and DXS52-FRAXA using a modification of the A test. Except for the interval F9-FRAXA (P〈0.10) there was no evidence of genetic heterogeneity for each of the various linkage groups examined. The heterogeneity detected for the interval F9-FRAXA, however, was most likely due to one family (Fx-28) that displayed very tight linkage between these two loci.

    Notes: Abstract The performance of a compact uv photo-preionized TE laser is studied in the pressure range 1–5 bar. As the pressure is increased, the laser pulse shape is little altered, but both the peak power and the total output pulse energy increase significantly with pressure, even for constant input electrical energy. For various gas mixtures and excitation source capacitors the measurements suggest approximate output energy scaling with the product of the source charge per unit electrode area [C.m−2] and the molecular partial pressure [CO2+N2+CO]. This is explained in terms of the pressure-dependent discharge impedance. An input-energy-related discharge instability limits the optimum laser pressure to 1.5–2.5 bar, and we show that, at constant input energy, the instability boundary depends on the molecular partial pressure alone. The pre-ionization photo-electron yield varies negligibly with pressure, but the discharge tolerance to added oxygen decreases asp −3 top −4, dependent on gas mixture. Nevertheless sealed operation for 〉105 shots has been obtained with a 5% CO2∶5% CO∶3% N2∶2% H2∶85% He gas mixture at a total pressure of 5 bar.

    Notes: Abstract A short pulse (100 ns) high-energy x-ray source has been used to preionize a transversely excited carbon dioxide gas discharge laser of 600 cm3 active volume. The maximum output power of 60 MW in a 50 ns FWHM pulse was achieved from a CO2−N2−He−CO−Xe static gas mixture at 600 Torr pressure. The energy conversion efficiency was 6%.
