Optically transparent, ferromagnetic films of Fe-F, Co-F, and Ni-F have been prepared by rf sputtering from powder-compacted targets of FeF3, CoF3, and NiF2. The films are amorphous, containing a small amount of crystalline fluoride. Some films showed perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high coercivity (700–1500 Oe), and fairly high remanence ratio (0.23–0.7). Faraday rotation coefficients of 104 deg/cm at a wavelength of 633 nm were found.
