Notes: Abstract Letu be the union of two unit circles whose centers have a distance at most 2. Motivated by more general problems it is proved that the density of a packing of translates ofu never exceeds the density of the densest lattice-packing.

Notes: Summary Monosodium-l-glutamate given subcutaneously to pregnant rats caused acute necrosis of the acetylcholinesterase-positive neurons in the area postrema. The same effect has been observed in the area postrema of fetal rats. The process of neuronal cell death and the elimination of debris by microglia cells proved to be similar in pregnant animals and in their fetuses. However, embryonal neurons were more sensitive to glutamate as judged by the rapidity of the process and the dose-response relationship. These observations raise the possibility of transplacental poisoning in human fetuses after the consumption of glutamate-rich food by the mother.

Notes: Summary Energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis was performed on human biopsy materials taken during laryngoscopic intervention in 18 cases. The removed tissue pieces were divided into two parts. One of them was used for pathohistological studies, the other was processed for X-ray microanalysis by the freeze-fracture freeze-drying method. Of the cases investigated 4 proved to be of benign character, whereas the rest contained carcinoma planocellulare keratoides or nonkeratoides. Bulk specimen energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis of 135 cells from the benign tissue samples revealed an average Na+/K+ molar ratio of 0.13±0.01 (SEM) in the intracellular space, with a regular Gaussian distribution. In the cases of carcinomas 641 cells were measured, the average of the same ratio was 0.67±0.03 (SEM) due mostly to an increase in the Na+ content. The distribution of data was apparently not normal in the cancerous samples. These observations and some theoretical considerations support the notion that the intracellular Na+/K+ ratio correlates with the proliferative capacity of tissues. The relevance of some recent biochemical results is also discussed in this respect.

Notes: Summary Density and breeding success of the great tit Parus major, blue tit Parus caeruleus and collared flycatcher Ficedula albicollis were studied in nest box colony in oak forest over a period of 19 years. Intraspecific density dependent clutch size reduction was found with blue tit and great tit. In interspecific relation the high density of blue tits reduced the clutch size of great tits. In the hatching period neither intraspecific nor interspecific density dependence were showed between the tits when the third competitive species, collared flycatcher was present. The collared flycatcher significantly reduced the hatching success of both tit species and the number of fledglings of great tit. The effects of the great tits and combined density of the great and blue tits on the hatching failure and number of fledglings of collared flycatcher were found when the density of the tits was high. There were not significant relationships to the single density of blue tits. The temporal variability of the competition of the three bird species is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A common mineralogical technique for identifying individual crystals in a heterogeneous, polycrystalline sample involves the observation at room temperature of their colors in reflected polarized light (colors of polarization). Here we present the observation that a brownish yellow (golden) color of polarization is not only characteristic of the YBa2Cu3O7 superconductor, but of the cuprate superconductors in general and is correlated with the occurrence of superconductivity.

Notes: Abstract Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O (BiSCCO) was melted and cast into molds in order to render the superconductor into fully dense and useful shapes. Special conditions for casting and subsequent heat treatments were required to ensure structural integrity and a high transition temperature,T c .The history of the castings during heat treatments was studied by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and microscopy.

Notes: Abstract Millimeter-sized crystals of ErBa2Cu3O7 were fortuitously grown while sintering a flat disk. It was possible to separate individual crystals from the sintered mass and measure their properties. The resistive transition and onset of magnetic transition of a single crystal was 93 K and the resistive transition width was 〈 1 K. Flux expulsion was observed and individual crystals could be levitated by a magnetic field. Crystals showed unusual growth features. They were heavily corrugated along the part of the crystal that grew parallel to the top surface of the disk and that coincided with thec axis of the unit cell. Crystals were characterized by X-rays, electron microscopy, and optical microscopy.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this work is to introduce and to test the hypothesis that pH-dependent self-oxidation of dead organic matter by its own respiratory electron transport system /ETS/ can be an important alternative process to active decomposition by microorganisms. An important event of the pH-dependent self-oxidation is the opening of cell walls and envelopes of decaying cells providing free opportunity for equilibration the internal and external pH. The ETS-activity of homogenates of living planktonic organisms and sediments derived from alkaline Lake Balaton /pH=8.4–8.6/ and that of Sphagnum moss from an acidic peat bog /pH=3.9–4.1/ showed uniformity pH-dependence of respiratory enzyme system in vitro, demonstrating that there is no adaptation in enzymatic level to the pH of environment. In an other set of experiments, where decaying Selenastrum capricornutum Prinz cultures were incubated in axenic conditions at pH=5.4 and pH=8.4, ETS-activity and changes in C of the samples at low pH were minimal. At high pH a cons high initial ETS-activity was found which decreased exponentially in time parallel with the exponential decrease of Corg content of the samples. C org content of these samples stabilised 5 weeks after the beginning of the experiment at 19.5% of the original value.
