Notes: Summary Two sulfur-containing ansamycin antibiotics were isolated from the culture broth ofStreptomyces albolongus C-46366; the major one was identical with awamycin and the minor one was a new ansamycin antibiotic, ansathiazin. Their structures were elucidated from their reactions and spectroscopic analyses. These antibiotics were active against gram-positive bacteria, acid-fast bacteria and a protozoan.

Notes: Summary Unilateral transient cerebral ischemia was produced in Mongolian gerbils by clipping the left common carotid artery for 1h. About 60% of the gerbils with neurological symptoms had post-ischemic seizures. The majority of those that had seizures died within a few days, and sections of their cerebral cortices contained many dark and shrunken neurons. However, the gerbils that did not have seizures survived without any severe complications. In the cerebral cortex of the latter, the neurons with diffuse or peripheral pallor of the perikarya were seen along with a small number of dark and shrunken neurons. Diffuse pallor occurred within a few hours following ischemia in layers III, V and VI, and disappeared 1 or 2 days after recirculation. Electron microscopically, these neurons showed dispersion of ribosomes, simple and elongated profiles of rough endoplasmic reticulum (r-ER), clustered vacuoles, and mild to moderate mitochondrial swelling. Occasional net-like tubulomembranous structures, probably derived from r-ER, were observed. On the other hand, peripheral pallor became apparent after 5 days following ischemia, usually involving layer II first and gradually extending to the deeper layers. Concomitantly, the amount of neuropil decreased and the dendrites exhibited tortuosity and irregularity in layer II. Electron microscopically, these neurons showed marked swelling of peripheral perikarya and polyribosomes and organelles were located peripherally to the nuclei. In addition, numerous degenerated axon terminals and distended dendrites were observed around the neurons. These observations indicate that diffuse pallor represents damage directly induced by ischemia and subsequent recirculation, while peripheral pallor is the delayed and remote effect of ischemia, probably due to degeneration of neuronal processes.

Notes: Abstract The characteristics of an optical fiber thermometer (OFT) having a black body cavity sensor, constructed with a thin platinum film sputtered on a sapphire rod tip, were examined and compared with those of bare or sheathed thermocouples. For time averaged temperature measurements by the OFT, the radiative heat loss is significant in the temperature range of flames. For fluctuating temperatures the OFT output has a slow response, due to its thermal inertia, which depends on the diameter of the sensor and flow conditions; in spite this the rapid response of the OFT is emphasized in the literature with the assumption of the ideal thermal behavior of the thin sputtered film ( ⩰ 4 μm) on a sapphire rod of 0.25 mm diameter. The fluctuation waveform predicted by the present numerical simulation agrees satisfactorily with the measured one, which proves that the major factor affecting the thermal inertia of an OFT sensor is the heat capacity of sapphire. A special compensation technique is needed to improve the response of the OFT.

Notes: Abstract Lymphocyte phosphorylase kinase activities were measured in normal controls and in patients with the sex-linked form of liver phosphorylase kinase deficiency. The reaction due to phosphorylase kinase activity in normal lymphocytes (2.7×106 in the reaction tube) was found to be linear within 20–60 min at 30° C. The reaction was directly proportional to the concentration of lymphocytes within 1.5×106–9.0×106, at 30° C for 60 min. The phosphorylase kinase activity in normal lymphocytes, which were pre-incubated at 50° C or 95° C for 1 min, decreased to 60% at 50° C and 10% at 95° C of that after pre-incubation at 0° C for 1 min. The activity of normal controls was 125±23.5 U/1010 lymphocytes. Those of the patients with liver phosphorylase kinase deficiency due to the sex-linked form were 43.5 U in case 1, 54.5 U in case 2, and 51.3 U in case 3, respectively and those of the mothers were within the normal range. These results suggest that phosphorylase kinase in lymphocytes might be form intermediate between liver and muscle phosphorylase kinase.

Notes: Abstract Ten patients with common variable immunodeficiency were classified into three groups according to the number of circulating B-cells, i.e. B-cells being absent (three patients), very low (three patients) or within the normal range (four patients). The four patients in the last group showed significant proliferative responses to the T-independent B-cell mitogen, formalin-fixed Staphylococcus aureus, Cowan I. Further study of these patients by co-cultures with allogeneic T or B-cells in various combinations with pokeweed mitogen showed that two patients had an intrinsic B-cell defect without T-cell defect. The third patient had a T-cell dysfunction (i.e. his T-cell could only help the B-cells of some individuals) resulting in a defect in Ig production. The T-cells of the fourth patient showed poor helper function towards all controls. All six patients with absent or very low numbers of B-cells in group I and II had normal T-cell helper function. This study demonstrates that the immunological defect in common variable immunodeficiency is most often a B-cell defect at different stages of their differentiation with sometimes an additional T-cell dysfunction.

Notes: Summary Ganglion cell tumours are mostly seen in children and young people, but they are extremely rare, accounting for 0.1–0.5% of all brain tumours. It usually occurs in the floor of the third ventricle and the temporal lobe. Recently we have experienced a pineal gangliocytoma, probably the first ever seen in Japan and the fourth case in the world, and have succeeded in a total removal of it. The case concerns a 51-year-old man who sufferend from intermittent blurred vision and headache of 3 years' duration. CT showed, together with severe hydrocephalus, positive contrast medium enhancement and a somewhat irregular but sharply circumscribed high density lesion suggestive of a meningioma. But the brain scintiscan revealed a badly and irregularly demarcated region of warm activity and having little change with time mainly in the pineal region, which was strongly suspicious of gliomas. Hence this scan was thought to be important in diagnosing this tumour. As an operative procedure, biparieto-occipital craniotomy was successfully performed in the “sea lion” position to remove the tumour totally. Pathological findings indicated a mixture of dispersion and concentration of giant cells possessing prominent nucleoli, abundant chromatin and a prominent nucleus or several nuclei of varying sizes and process-like cell bodies polygonal or irregular in shape. GFAP stain showing no glial fibres and the tumour was thought to be a gangliocytoma.

Notes: New types of focusing lenses for relativistic electron beams (REBs) are proposed, and preliminary experimental results are obtained. The principle of the lenses is as follows: When REBs are injected into the small apertures of cylindrical superconducting lenses, self-magnetic fields of the REBs are perfectly confined in a region between the REBs and the wall of the lenses. The REBs are focused by those compressed fields. The superiority of superconducting lenses was shown using foilless REB diodes which were operated at 0.15-Torr Ne and had high-Tc , cylindrical superconductor anodes made of Y-Ba-Cu-O compounds (axial lengths of 30 and 145 mm and an inner diameter of 20 mm). The focused REBs (0.8 kA, 270 keV, pulse widths of less than 5 ns) had main beam diameters less than 2 mm.

Notes: X-ray intensity versus energy (I-E) curves were measured in order to obtain the rod profiles. The three-dimensional surface structures of Si(111) 7/8 × 7/8 -Bi and -Ag were analyzed. The adsorption sites with respect to the crystal were derived from the intensity changes along the integral-order rods especially near the Bragg points by utilizing the interference effect between the x rays diffracted from the adsorbed layer and the bulk crystal. The positions of the surface Si atoms were studied by using the interference effect between the x rays diffracted from the adsorbed layer and the surface Si layer.

Notes: A simple programmed temperature controller has been developed to grow single crystals from an aqueous solution. Linear temperature versus time ramps of several days or longer have been achieved with this instrument. From this we have been able to obtain large crystals. An analog ramp generator with an electrochemical device, named MEMORIODE, forms the basis of this design.

Notes: This article describes the outline of a time-resolved x-ray measurement system developed at the Photon Factory to study the pulsed laser annealing of silicon crystals. This system consists of a triple-crystal diffractometer, Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, and two fast detector electronics using a plastic scintillation counter, and enables us to examine the time-change behavior of nearly intrinsic rocking curves under laser irradiation with a time resolution of about 50 ns. The difference in the recovery from lattice deformation between 1.06-μm laser annealing and 0.53-μm laser annealing is clarified.
