Notes: Summary An adoptive immunotherapy of 6 patients with medulloblastoma by lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) cells is described. They were from 2 to 9 years in age and had cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dissemination of the tumours. All patients underwent the whole-neuraxis irradiation and chemotherapy. After the usual treatments, they were submitted to an adoptive transfer of one-haplotype identical LAK cells. The LAK cells were induced from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) of their relatives with human recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2). 3–15×109 LAK cells were transferred intrathecally in 2–3 months. In 3 of 6 patients, neurological signs were improved and malignant cells had never been detected on CSF cytology after the adoptive immunotherapy. One among these 3 patients showed complete response in 20 months. Thus, this is an attractive approach for the treatment of medulloblastoma with CSF dissemination of the tumour which current therapeutic intervention can not cure.

Notes: Summary Clinical and cytogenetic aspects of a female infant with trisomy 21 and the fragile X [fra (X)] chromosome are reported. Most of the facial characteristics of the patient are those observed in Down syndrome, but some features such as long face with prominent forehead and lower jaw, and large ears are related to the fra (X) syndrome. The origin of an additional chromosome 21 may be ascribed to maternal first meiotic nondisjunction in our case. It has been suspected that female carriers of the fra (X) chromosome may be predisposed to meiotic nondisjunctional events. However, there is probably no relationship between the two chromosomal abnormalities in our case because of the maternal age at the delivery.

Notes: Abstract The effect of high temperature reduction in hydrogen was studied by angle resolved XPS in a system formed of platinum deposited on the (100) surface of a TiO2 single crystal sample. The analysis of the variation of the Pt/Ti XPS signal ratio as a function of the electron collection angle showed that partially reduced titanium oxide is present on the Pt film after the reduction treatment. The amount of oxide on the Pt surface is of the order of one monolayer equivalent.

Notes: Abstract The nameKlebsiella ornithinolytica sp. nov. is proposed for a group ofKlebsiella strains referred to previously as NIH Group 12 at the National Institute of Health, Tokyo. The members of this species are Gram-negative, encapsulated, nonmotile rods with the general characteristics of the familyEnterobacteriaceae and of the genusKlebsiella. They give positive results in tests for indole production, Voges-Proskauer, citrate utilization, lysine and ornithine decarboxylases, urease, β-galactosidase, malonate utilization, growth in KCN, and esculin hydrolysis, and they produce acid and gas fromd-glucose, and acid froml-arabinose, cellobiose, lactose, melibiose, raffinose, rhamnose, sucrose, trehalose,d-xylose, adonitol,d-arabitol, myo-inositol, sorbitol, arbutin, salicin, α-methyl-d-glucoside, and mucate. They give negative drolysis, DNase, pectinase, and acid production fromd-arabinose, melezitose, and dulcitol. They can grow at 4°C and 42°C, and do not produce any pigment. DNA relatedness of eight strains ofKlebsiella ornithinolytica to three strains including the type strain of this species averaged 88% in reaction at 75°C. DNA relatedness to the already recognizedKlebsiella species inEnterobacteriaceae was 1 to 20%. Phenotypic and DNA relatedness data also indicated that a group of organisms referred to as Enteric Group 47 orKlebsiella Group 47 at the Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta, Georgia) was identical withK. ornithinolytica. The type strain ofK. ornithinolytica is NIH 90-72 (JCM 6096).

Notes: Summary A simple and highly sensitive spectrophotometric determination of iron with pyrogallolphthalein in a micellar medium of non-ionic surfactant is proposed. This method is based on the kinetic-catalytic action of iron(III) upon the decomposition reaction between pyrogallolphthalein and potassium perdisulphate at pH 2.4–2.9 in the presence of Triton X 100 as a non-ionic surfactant. The calibration graph is linear over the range 10–600 ng iron(III) per 10 ml in spectrophotometry (apparent molar absorption coefficient for decomposition was 1.25×10−6 l per mole per cm at 385 nm). The method was applied to assay and recovery tests for artificial waste water with satisfactory results (recovery 97.6%–103.5%).
