    Notes: The perpendicular orientational relaxation time (τ⊥) of the nitrate ion was determined as a function of concentration by the Raman line shape analysis (ν1 stretch) in aqueous LiNO3 and KNO3 solutions in the range of 0.2–1 M and by the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) T1 measurement (14N) in MNO3 (M=Li, Na, K, and Cs) solutions in the range of 0.02–1 M; the parallel orientational relaxation time (τ(parallel)) was also determined by the NMR measurement for the solutions enriched in 17O. Both τ⊥ and τ(parallel) increase linearly with increasing concentration up to 1 M; the limiting values of τ⊥ and τ(parallel) were 1.25 and 1.9 ps, respectively. The slope increases with the surface charge density of the countercation except for Li+. These trends are predicted in very dilute solutions by the continuum theory developed in the previous paper. The anomalous behavior of Li+ was explained in terms of its strong hydration.

    Notes: Selective deposition of polycrystalline and single-crystal diamonds has been achieved on a silicon wafer by chemical vapor deposition from CH4 and H2 gases using a hot-filament method. The nucleation of diamonds occurs selectively at the sites fabricated by successive roughening and patterned etching of wafers.

    Notes: Abstract The three-body Faddeev equations for neutron-deuteron scattering are solved in the energy region from 2.5 MeV to 50 MeV of the incident neutron energy with small energy steps. Higher-rank separable potentials are used in the1 s 0 wave and in the3 s 1—3 d 1 waves, while rank-1 separable potentials are used in1 p 1,3 p 0,1,2 1 d 2 3 d 2,3 waves. The calculation is compared with experiments for the total cross section, the total break-up cross section, the differential cross section and the analyzing power of neutron-deuteron scattering. The improvements in the agreement as compared to previous calculations are impressive in many cases. Especially, the calculated total cross section agrees with the experiment below 30 MeV within the error bars, which are as small as 1%. A discussion on the numerical accuracy is given. General aspects of the calculated cross section are discussed. It is pointed out that thes-wave asymptotic normalization of the deuteron wave function (A s ) is important.

    Notes: Abstract Retinal sheathed vessels from five patients with various vascular diseases were examined by light and electron microscopy. All of these vessels were characterized by a marked increase and disarrangement of collagen fibrils in the media and adventitia. Cytoplasmic processes of glial cells had invaded the adventitia in sheathed vessels and even in unsheathed ones. Thickening and multilamination of the basal laminae were observed in both the sheathed and unsheathed vessels. The lumens of most sheathed vessels were still patent, and the blood cells and endothelial cells of these vessels appeared to be intact. We found no essential differences in the ultrastructure of these vessels in the five patients with various vascular diseases. It is concluded that the increase and disarrangement of collagen fibrils may be mainly related to the ophthalmoscopic appearance of the sheathing and that other factors seem to be of lesser significance.

    Notes: Abstract The solubilities of o-, m- and p-xylene in water were measured at 25.0°C up to 250, 385, and 50 MPa, respectively. The solubility increased with increasing pressure up to 120 MPa (50 MPa for p-xylene) and then decreased. The reaction volumes, ΔVo accompanying the dissolution at 0.1 MPa were estimated as −3.6±0.5, −3.4±0.5, and −4.1±0.5 cm3-mol−1 for o-, m-, and p-xylene, respectively, from the pressure dependences of the solubilities. The limiting partial molar volumes, of p- and o-xylene in water under high pressure were estimated from ΔVo and the molar volume of the xylene. The partial molar volumes decreased with increasing pressure. The reaction volume for the formation of intra-molecular pairwise hydrophobic interaction between the methyl groups, as proposed by Ben-Naim, is discussed for the ΔVo of p- and o-xylene at 0.1 MPa.

    Notes: Abstract The near-infrared absorption spectra (9500 to 11000 cm−1) of HOD, 20 mol% in D2O were measured at temperatures between 4 and 55°C and pressures up to 500 MPa. From the analysis of the spectra, the following conclusions are drawn. (1) At temperatures below about 38°C, the ice I-like bulky structure is destroyed to form the dense structure which reflects the high-pressure ice-like structure as the pressure is increased. (2) At temperatures above about 38°C, the bulky structure hardly remains at atmospheric pressure and the formation of dense structure proceeds monotonically with increasing pressure. The results and conclusion obtained in the present paper agrees with those obtained for pure H2O water in the previous investigation.

    Notes: Abstract The left eye of a 77 year old male patient was enucleated because of absolute glaucoma. This eye showed subnormal electroretinogram (ERG) and oscillatory potentials preoperatively, but the other eye showed Schubert-Bornschein type ERG and monophasic dark adaptation curve. Light and electron microscopic studies of the left eye showed a normal arrangement of discs of rod outer segments, normal synaptic ends of the photoreceptors, and complete loss of ganglion cells. From the subnormal ERG in the left eye we assumed it was originally Schubert-Bornschein type ERG but inverted to subnormal type ERG following the loss of inhibitory mechanisms. Thus we propose that the cause of night blindness in congenital stationary cases with Schubert-Bornschein type ERG may be related to the mechanisms inhibitory to cells of the bipolar layer.
