Notes: Abstract The analysis of tin in biological materials is rarely reported. In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to determine the tin together with some other trace elements in various organs of rats treated with trialkyltin-methacrylic copolymer. No appreciable accumulation of tin and variation of distribution of trace elements (Cr, Fe, Zn and Co) in various organs are found. The pathological changes in the liver sections cannot be observed either. This therefore indicates that the toxicity of trialkyltin-methacrylic copolymer is low, if any.

Notes: Abstract Five kinds of urinary stones from 42 patients have been determined for a total of 19 elements by instrumental neutron activation analysis. Of these elements, Ca, Mg, Sr, Na, and Cl are found to be present in the core of all kinds of stones. The differences in elemental composition among the different kinds of stones as well as across the layers of stone are statistically evaluated.

Notes: This paper describes the basic ideas of sequential quadratic programming (SQP) algorithms for design optimization. There are two fundamental differences between the various algorithms: (i) the difinition of the QP subproblem solved at each iteration, and (ii) the descent function used during step size determination. The performances of the algorithms can change dramatically depending on how the two steps are executed. Numerical implementation details of various computational steps are discussed. Three programs based on SQP algorithms are used to solve 17 structural design problems having 7 to 96 design variables and 10 to 1051 performance constraints besides design variable bounds. Based on the performance of these programs, efficient procedures to execute various steps of the SQP methods are determined. It is concluded that the potential constraint strategy, where only a subset of the constraints is used to define the QP subproblem, is essential for large scale engineering design applications. With this strategy the SQP methods are quite robust and have great potential for routine application in engineering design.

Notes: Uniform polystyrene particles in 1-10 μm size range and up to 40% solid contents have been prepared by polymerizing styrene in ethyl alcohol with azo-type initiators and a polymeric stabilizer polyvinylpyrrolidone along with an anionic, nonionic, or comonomeric co-stabilizer. Effects of polymerization parameters, such as monomer concentration, type of co-stabilizer, initiator type and concentration, crosslinking monomer, and diluent on average particle size and size distribution have been studied. Functional groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, amine, amide, silane, polydimethylsiloxane, and silacrown have been successfully incorporated onto the particles by copolymerization. A mechanism for particle formation and growth in dispersion polymerization is presented.

Notes: Abstract The radioactive tracer technique was used to investigate the adsorption behaviour of 47 ions onto hydrous magnesium oxide. Detailed studies on Co(II), Zn(II), La(III) and Ce(III) reveal that the adsorption isotherms of these ions obey Langmuir's law. Radiochemical separation using hydrous magnesium oxide was applied to the RNAA of NBS standard reference materials, and satisfactory results were obtained. Hydrous magnesium oxide was also used to adsorb various ions from aqueous solution for the purpose of preconcentration which was followed by NAA or ICP-AES analysis. Satisfactory results have been observed in both methods.

Notes: Abstract Method for the isolation and radioactive cobalt /including58Co and60Co/ from a large volume of seawater and concentration in a small volume of chloroform as tris/pyrrolidine dithiocarbamato/cobalt/III/, Co/PDC/3, is described. The seawater was extracted first with Bi/PDC/3 in chloroform for removing parts of foreign metals like Hg, Ag, etc., and then added with ammonium pyrrolidindithiocarbamate, APDC, to complex with Co and possibly other ions and extracted into the organic phase. The final separation of Co from foreign ions in the organic phase was achieved by stripping with a Bi/III/ solution. The overall recovery of radiocobalt activity was found to be about 96%. The established method can be applicable for rapid and reliable determination of radiocobalt in seawater and other aqueous systems for environmental contamination.

Notes: Abstract We have recently developed a new method of measuring the initial51Cr(III) produced from nuclear recoil of K2CrO4. In our method, K2CrO4 was mixed with MgO in the presence of a small amount of water, and the mixture was irradiated in a nuclear reactor. After irradiation, the mixture was dissolved in water, and MgO precipitate was separated from the solution. The yield of recoil51Cr(III) could be calculated from the51Cr activity in the precipitate measured. On the other hand, the yield of retention of51Cr as chromate could be calcualted from the activity found in the supernatant. The51Cr(III) yield thus obtained is almost a factor of 2 higher than observed in pure K2CrO4 without mixing with MgO, irradiated under the same condition. Another important observation is that the51Cr(III) yield is independent of irradiation time in the presence of MgO. Without MgO, the observed51Cr(III) yield decreases with increasing irradiation time, suggesting possible oxidation of Cr(III) to chromate during irradiation. This variation is not observed in the system of K2CrO4 containing MgO, indicating that the initial Cr(III) is adsorbed immediately after nuclear recoil by MgO and is protected from oxidation by gamma radiation.
