Notes: Summary Four of seven patients with nemaline myopathy had severe, rapidly progressing symptoms. These four showed an increase in acid phosphatase activity in muscle fibers demonstrated by histochemistry and cathepsin B&L activity by biochemical measurement. On electron microscopy, nemaline bodies, occasionally disorganized myofibrils and autophagic vacuoles containing sarcoplasmic debris and glycogen particles were seen. Focal myofibrillar degeneration, through an unknown pathogenetic mechanism, induces an increase in lysosomal enzymes in the skeletal muscles which may be closely correlated with a rapid aggravation of muscle weakness in nemaline myopathy.

Notes: Summary In a study of duration of brain death, granular layer autolysis (GLA) of the cerebellar cortex was analyzed in 45 patients who died of acute cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs). Twelve patients who died of causes other than intracranial disease served as controls. Tonsillar herniation occurred in all who died of acute CVDs. More advanced GLA was seen in the central folia adjacent to the central white medullary body of the cerebellum as compared with the peripheral folia. Widespread GLA involving the most of the peripheral folia was found solely in patients in whom brain death had been present over 18 h. Of the 12 control patients, 4 showed GLA only in the central folia. Although GLA of the central folia might develop during immersion fixation of the brain, the alteration of the peripheral folia is assumed to develop in the period of brain death. Widespread GLA extending to the peripheral folia could be a pathological finding characteristic of brain death, where intracranial blood flow could be absent or significantly reduced. Brain death for little less than 1 day would be necessary for GLA to develop.

Notes: ZnSe homoepitaxial layers with high crystalline quality were grown on (100) ZnSe substrates (grown by the iodine vapor transport method) between 190 and 250 °C. The surface morphologies of homoepitaxial layers (homoepilayers) grown below 250 °C were all mirrorlike. The concentration of self-activated (SA) centers is related to the growth temperature. The band-edge photoluminescence (PL) intensity increases drastically with increasing temperature from 190 up to 210 °C, decreases above 210 °C, and the SA-PL intensity increases monotonically as the growth temperature increases. The mechanism of suppressing the occurrence of SA centers below 250 °C is assumed that the concentration of Zn vacancies diffused from the highly iodine-doped ZnSe substrates into the ZnSe homoepilayers reduces at this temperature region. The SA-PL intensity of the ZnSe homoepilayer with the strongest band-edge emission (grown at 210 °C) is the same or weaker than that of the best ZnSe heteroepitaxial layer (heteroepilayer). Below 200 °C, the FWHM of the ZnSe (400) diffraction is 14 arcsec which is the best value we have ever obtained, though the growth temperature seems to be too low to maintain the crystalline quality. The comparison on the crystalline quality with the ZnSe heteroepilayers is discussed in detail from the viewpoints of the epitaxial growth mechanism.

Notes: Summary Anterior stabilization during thoracotomy, using the patient's own ribs, was carried out seven times in six subjects with malignant lesions of the thoracic vertebrae. The primary malignancy was lung carcinoma in four cases, thyroid carcinoma in one case, and alveolar soft tissue sarcoma in one. Resection of the lung tumor and spinal surgery were carried out simultaneously. Four of the six patients had complete paraplegia and two had partial paraplegia prior to the operation. After the decompression and anterior stabilization, three subjects responded well and three responded poorly because of respiratory insufficiency.

Notes: Summary Fibroin light chain (L-chain) mRNA (mol. wt 4.0×105 daltons) was purified from the posterior silk gland of the silkworm,Bombyx mori (J-131 strain). Double-stranded complementary DNA was synthesized and inserted into the PstI site of pBR322 employing the oligo(dC)-oligo(dG) tailing method. Several recombinant plasmids containing the inserts of about 800 base pairs were isolated. Hybridization-translation assay demonstrated that these clones hybridized specifically with the fibroin L-chain mRNA. One of these clones (pLA23) was used as a probe to investigate relative concentrations of the fibroin L-chain gene and mRNA in the posterior silk glands at different stages of late larval development.

Notes: Abstract The formation mechanism of the nocturnal urban boundary layer (UBL), especially in the winter nighttime, was investigated based on the extensive field observations conducted during November 1984 in Sapporo, Japan. A strong, elevated inversion formed over the Sapporo urban area and the inversion base height was approximately twice the average building height. The turbulent kinetic energy budget showed that the turbulent transport term and shear generation from urban canopy elements are important in the nocturnal UBL development; the role of the buoyancy term is small. The turbulence data analysis and application of a simple advective model showed that the mechanism of UBL formation may be controlled by the downward transport of sensible heat from the elevated inversion caused by mechanically-generated turbulence.

Notes: Abstract The complex forming ability of a water-soluble β-cyclodextrin epichlorohydrin, polymer (CDPS) and its different molecular weight fractions was studied and compared with the complexing properties of β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and dimethyl-βCD (DM-βCD). CDPS was separated into two main fractions. CDPS and its fractions formed well soluble inclusion compounds with the studied drugs. The low molecular weight fraction formed rather stable complexes with small guest molecules, the high molecular weight fraction was found to be more efficient in binding larger substrates. Structural studies of furosemide-CD complexes were attempted by NMR spectroscopy.

Notes: Abstract A numerical case study with a second-order turbulence closure model is proposed to study the role of urban canopy layer (UCL) for the formation of the nocturnal urban boundary layer (UBL). The turbulent diffusion coefficient was determined from an algebraic stress model. The concept of urban building surface area density is proposed to represent the UCL. Calculated results were also compared with field observation data. The height of the elevated inversion above an urban center was simulated and found to be approximately twice the average building height. The turbulent kinetic energy k, energy dissipation rate ε, and turbulence intensities 〈u 2〉 and 〈w 2〉 increase rapidly at the upwind edge of the urban area. The Reynolds stress 〈uw〉 displayed a nearly uniform profile inside the UBL, and the vertical sensible heat flux 〈wθ〉 had a negative value at the inversion base height. This indicates that the downward transport of sensible heat from the inversion base may play an important role in the formation of the nocturnal UBL.
