Notes: Summary The clinical and laboratory findings in seven female patients with primary autoimmune diseases, one female patient with lymphoplasmacytoid (LP) immunocytoma and IgM paraproteinemia, and two male patients with multiple myeloma are described. The common denominator in all patients was a lupus anticoagulant or a closely related coagulation disorder. Recurrent thrombosis was observed in six patients with autoimmune diseases and in two patients with malignant monoclonal gammopathies. Other clinical manifestations included cerebral disorders (four patients with autoimmune disease/two patients with monoclonal gammopathy), repeated obstetric complications (6/1), asymptomatic valvular heart disease (6/1), renal dysfunction (6/2), hepatic involvement (2/2), and arthropathy (2/0). Laboratory investigations revealed a biologic false-positive serological test for syphilis in six patients with autoimmune disease and one with monoclonal gammopathy, antinuclear antibodies (4/0), antibodies against DNA (4/1), and a positive direct Coombs test (3/1) which was accompanied by hemolytic anemia in two patients (1/1). Additionally slight leucocytopenia (2/1) and thrombocytopenia (6/2) were observed; abnormal bleeding was only seen in one patient with severe thrombocytopenia. Other complications characteristic of LP immunocytoma or multiple myeloma were missing. The obvious similarities between the patients with autoimmune diseases and the patients with malignant monoclonal gammopathies suggest analogous pathogenetic mechanisms. Since the clinical syndrome associated with the lupus anticoagulant in patients with autoimmune disorders has been proposed to arise from the action of autoantibodies against phospholipids, it is attractive to hypothesize that the findings in the patients with malignant diseases were caused by an autoantibody activity of the monoclonal immunoglobulin. This assumption is substantiated by the observation that in one patient the paraprotein level correlated with the prolongation of the coagulation times and the severeness of the clinical perturbations. Although paraproteins mimicking the laboratory alterations of the lupus anticoagulant have been reported before, the corresponding clinical features have not yet been described in malignant monoclonal gammopathies. The syndrome may be juxtaposed to other systemic disorders complicating paraproteinemias, and is possibly more frequent than is as yet known.

Notes: Abstract Uptake of tungstate by growing cells was unaffected by the presence of molybdate in Clostridium cylindrosporum, whereas in C. acidiurici the accumulation was decreased by molybdate at 10-6 mol/l tungstate and higher concentrations. The labelling pattern of soluble proteins by 185W-tungsten indicated after gel chromatography the presence of three different tungstoproteins in both bacteria. Formate dehydrogenase activity always eluted at a maximum of tungsten labelling. The incorporation of tungsten into formate dehydrogenase containing fractions and a possible tungsten-binding-storage protein was independent of the presence of excess molydate pointing to a genuine role for tungstate in these bacteria.

Notes: Photoconductors are very promising x/γ-ray detectors and x-ray bolometers for pulsed x/γ-ray measurements. They are fast, sensitive, and theoretically flat in spectral response for low energy x rays. We report our tests of InP:Fe, GaAs, and GaAs:Cr, both neutron damaged and undamaged, at Nova laser, Febetrons, and electron linear accelerators. The temporal and spectral responses are discussed.

Notes: Recently we have demonstrated that InP:Fe photoconductors are fast (FWHM∼150 ps), sensitive (2.7×10−3 A/W), and flat response soft x-ray detectors using synchrotron radiation from the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory.1 We have applied these to the measurement of the radiation emitted by a collapsing annular gas (argon) puff z-pinch plasma. The detector was used in two modes of operation: (1) a filtered soft x-ray detector as a pinch diagnostic and (2) a fast unfiltered bolometer to measure the total radiated power as a function of time. We will compare the performance of the photoconductors to other common fast x-ray detectors and bolometers.

Notes: : Rainfall is a significant source of some constituents, particularly nitrogen species, in storm runoff from urban catchments. Median contributions of rainfall to storm runoff loads of 12 constituents from 31 urban catchments, representing eight geographic locations within the United States, ranged from 2 percent for suspended solids to 74 percent for total nitrite plus nitrate nitrogen. The median contribution of total nitrogen in rainfall to runoff loads was 41 percent. Median contributions of total-recoverable lead in rainfall to runoff loads varied by as much as an order of magnitude between catchments in the same geographic location. This indicates that average estimates of rainfall contributions to constituent loading in storm runoff may not be suitable in studies requiring accurate constituent mass-balance computations.

Notes: A series of deletions was constructed within the spacer region of the genes for the 16S and 23S RNA on plasmids bearing the rrnB operon. The accumulation and synthesis rates for the 16S and 23S RNAs were determined from normal growing cells and maxicells after transformation with the mutated plasmids. A marked difference In the transcription efficiency of the plasmid-encoded ribosomal 16S and 23S RNAs was observed with cells carrying plasmids, where a sequence motif analogous to the antitermination recognition sequence (Box A) had been deleted. The overall synthesis rate of ribosomal RNAs of such cells was not altered, however, indicating that the difference in transcription rates from the plasmid genes is compensated by altered transcription rates of the corresponding chromosomal genes. In addition, the accumulation of various tRNA species encoded on rRNA operons and non rRNA operons was quantitated and compared. From these results we infer that the regulation of ribosomal RNA transcription does not only occur at the promoter sites but sequence regions possibly involved in antitermination within the operon are crucial for a coordinated synthesis of all ribosomal RNAs.

Notes: We have demonstrated that InP:Fe photoconductive detectors are sensitive to radiation between 20 and 3000 eV. Within experimental error the measured response is flat in this energy range, in agreement with theory. This property, coupled with the simplicity and high speed (full width at one half maximum of less than 200 ps) of these devices, makes them very interesting for the measurement of pulsed vacuum ultraviolet and x-ray radiation and the total instantaneous integrated radiative power emitted from a pulsed source. Low fidelity response can occur in these devices for excitation times that are many times longer than the primary response time of the detector.
