Notes: Abstract To date only marine strains of the genus Beggiatoa have been proven to have the capacity for lithoautotrophic growth. The two best characterized freshwater strains (B18LD and OH-75-2a) — previously tested with no evidence of autotrophic potential — were reinvestigated in the current study. Heterotrophically grown cells from exponential or early stationary phase showed extremely low ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO) activities (0.002–0.2 nmol CO2·mg prot-1 min-1). After acetate limitation terminated growth both strains demonstrated increased RuBisCO activity with a maximum achieved 1–3 days into stationary phase. For a single growth cycle, activity could increase by more than 100-fold (strain OH-75-2a), but the highest activity achieved was less than 5% of that observed in a lithoautotrophic control. Phosphoribulokinase activity was approximately an order of magnitude greater than the corresponding RuBisCO activity and showed a similar pattern of regulation. A gene probe derived from the RuBisCO large subunit gene of Anacystis nidulans hybridized strongly with DNA from strain OH-75-2a and the autotrophic marine control but not with DNA from strain B18LD.

Notes: Summary The problem of two hydrogenlike atomic sites (s-shells only) coupled via a hopping matrix is considered. We employ a new formalism, the Liouville operator resolvent method, to evaluate the single-particle thermodynamic Green’s function for this system. Details of the method are also discussed.

Notes: Colloidally precipitated powders were investigated for the synthesis of chemically homogeneous, uniformly fine-grained Mn-Zn ferrites. The process consists of the atomized dispersion of an aqueous solution of Mn, Zn, and Fe nitrates in an agitated solution of 1M ammonium hydroxide. This results in the coprecipitation of a fine colloidal mixture of Mn, Zn, and Fe hydroxides. The mixture is filtered, washed, dried, and heat treated to form agglomerated powders. The agglomerated powders are reduced in size and sintered after cold compaction. Sintering was performed at temperatures of 1100–1250 °C with oxygen partial pressures from 0 to 500 ppm in argon. Magnetic permeability and disaccommodation were measured on selected samples after an initial 0.5–5.0 Oe decaying sinusoidal field was applied to the specimens to excite time varying permeability. The permeability variation depended strongly on the magnitude of this excitation; both disaccommodation and accommodation were observed. The duplex structure typically associated with severe discontinuous grain growth was not observed for either of the two compositions examined over the range of sintering temperatures studied. Low levels of porosity were seen in samples sintered at 1150 and 1250 °C.

Notes: A near-field capacitance microscope has been demonstrated on a 25 nm scale. A resonant circuit provides the means for sensing the capacitance variations between a sub-100-nm tip and surface with a sensitivity of 1×10−19 F in a 1 kHz bandwidth. Feedback control is used to scan the tip at constant gap across a sample, providing a means of noncontact surface profiling. Images of conducting and nonconducting structures are presented.

Notes: Measurement of dopant density in silicon with lateral resolution on the 200 nm scale has been demonstrated with a near-field capacitance technique. The technique is based upon the measurement of local capacitance between a 100 nm tip and a semiconducting surface. Lateral dopant imaging is achieved by the measurement of the voltage-dependent capacitance between tip and sample due to the depletion of carriers in the semiconductor, as the tip is scanned laterally over the surface. Measurements of dopant density have been demonstrated over a dopant range of 1015–1020 cm−3. Capacitance-voltage measurements have been made on a submicrometer scale.

Notes: The development of a radiochemical enzyme assay for p-octopamine in 1969 led to its identification in a large number of invertebrate nerve systems and in mammalian sympathetic nerves. The original method by which p-octopamine was measured has now been found to be nonspecific; however, modifications of this procedure can determine both m- and p-octopamine. We recently developed a new specific method for the unequivocal identification and quantitative determination in tissue of the six octopamine and synephrine isomers. With this method—negative chemical ionization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry—the more physiologically active m-octopamine has been found in association with p-octopamine in 10 organs of the rat. m-Octopamine is present in concentrations equal to those of p-octopamine in heart, spleen, and liver and in concentrations from 30 to 60% of p-octopamine in adrenals, vas deferens, brain, kidney, large intestine, bladder, and lungs. In vivo inhibition of monoamine oxidase markedly increased the concentrations of both m- and p-octopamine in all organs examined. Both amines were virtually absent from all organs except the adrenals following chemical sympathectomy with 6-hydroxydopamine, thereby establishing that m- and p-octopamine are localized within sympathetic nerve endings.

Notes: Four cases of air embolism which occurred during neurosurgical procedures in the sitting position are described, in whom the signs could be due to air in the coronary or cerebral arteries. It is suggested that, during venous air embolism in the sitting position, a significant number of patients are haemodynamically at risk from paradoxical air embolism, and that the serious consequences of venous air embolism in neurosurgery may be due to this.

Notes: Clinical and pathological findings in 87 patients with juvenile polyposis have been reviewed; 1032 polyps were available from 80 of these patients; 840 were typical spherical juvenile polyps whereas 169 differed in being multilobulated or showing a villous configuration; 79 (46.7%) of the latter contained foci of epithelial dysplasia whereas only 76 (9.0%) of the typical juvenile polyps were dysplastic. The series also included 21 adenomas and two hyperplastic (metaplastic) polyps. The demonstration of dysplasia provides a histogenetic mechanism for the evolution of colorectal cancer from hamartomatous polyps; 18 juvenile polyposis patients have developed colorectal cancer at a mean age of 34 years (range 15–59). The clinical outcome was generally poor. No clinical or pathological distinction could be made between polyposis patients with and without colorectal cancer. Thus, the development of cancer in juvenile polyposis appears to be a random event. A working definition of juvenile polyposis is provided: (1) more than five juvenile polyps of the colorectum; and/or (2) juvenile polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract; and/or (3) any number of juvenile polyps with a family history of juvenile polyposis. It is suggested that the condition should be treated as seriously as familial adenomatous polyposis except that regular colonoscopic surveillance may obviate the need for prophylactic colectomy.
