    Notes: The transition to three-dimensionality in the near wake of a circular cylinder involves two successive transitions, each of which corresponds with a discontinuity in the Strouhal–Reynolds number relationship. The first discontinuity [between Reynolds numbers (Re) of 170 to 180] is associated with the inception of vortex loops, and it is hysteretic. The second discontinuity (between Re=230 to 260) corresponds with a change to a finer-scale streamwise vortex structure. At this discontinuity there is no hysteresis, and it is suggested that two modes of vortex shedding alternate in time.

    Notes: The existence of a discontinuity in the Strouhal–Reynolds number relationship for the laminar vortex shedding of a cylinder is found to be caused by a change in the mode of oblique shedding. By "inducing'' parallel shedding (from manipulating end conditions) the resulting Strouhal curve becomes completely continuous and agrees very well with the oblique-shedding data, if it is transformed by S0=Sθ/cos θ (where Sθ is the Strouhal number corresponding with the oblique-shedding angle θ). The curve also agrees with data from a completely different facility. This provides evidence that this Strouhal curve (S0) is universal (for a circular cylinder).

    Notes: Abstract This mapping of RILEM work traces the situation at a given time—the occasion of the 38th meeting of RILEM General Council held in Tsukuba (Japan) in October 1984. In fact our technical committees work as task groups, set up for a limited duration, most often 3 or 4 years, so the situation described is a transient state, already modified since the Tsukuba meeting. Some committees have already accomplished their task, others have been set up (cf. page 145). But the overall perspective remains correct.

    Notes: Summary The genomic RNAs of aphid lethal paralysis virus (ALPV) andRhopalosiphum padi virus (RhPV)—two distinct picorna-like viruses found in aphids [Williamson et al. (1988) J Gen Virol 69: 787–795]—were both efficiently translated in rabbit reticulocyte lysates. ALPV RNA was translated into primary products with molecular weights ranging from 92 kDa to 170 kDa. These underwent time-dependent post-translational cleavage to produce smaller polypeptides including some with molecular weights comparable to those of the viral structural proteins. A 92 kDa polypeptide as well as smaller proteins were immunoprecipitated with capsid protein antisera, indicating the presence of at least one large capsid subunit protein precursor. RhPV RNA was translated into products of molecular weights ranging from 45 kDa to 175 kDa. There was no evidence for time-dependent post-translation cleavage of RhPV translation products. However, a 60 kDa polypeptide was precipitated with antiserum to RhPV virions, indicating that at least one capsid protein of RhPV is derived by proteolysis of a precursor protein, like those of ALPV and most other picornaviruses.
