Notes: Summary We have analysed the pharmacokinetics ofα-human atrial natriuretic polypeptide (α-hANP) in healthy subjects, using a two-compartment open model following bolus intravenous injection. The plasma half-times for the fast and slow components were 1.7±0.07 min and 13.3±1.69 min respectively. V1 (the volume of the central compartment), Vz (volume of distribution) and Vss (volume of distribution at steady-state) were 5370±855 ml (89.5±14.3 ml·kg−1), 32000±4620 ml (533±77.0 ml·kg−1), and 11900±1530 ml (198±25.5 ml·kg−1) respectively. The mean plasma clearance was 1520±121 ml·min−1 (25.4±2.0 ml·min−1·kg−1.

Notes: Selective growth of GaAs using an Ar+ laser beam is reported. The laser irradiation during growth in the substrate temperature range 400–525 °C forms a GaAs spot of 400 μm in diameter. The spot growth rate increases up to 1.3 μm/h with laser power and does not depend on the type of substrate conductivity. Temperature rise due to the irradiation is revealed to be 7° at 120 °C for the laser power of 500 mW (laser beam diameter 400 μm). A concentric circle pattern can be formed by diffracting a laser beam. These results strongly suggest that the growth rate enhancement arises from the photodissociation of metalorganic molecules.

Notes: Secondary-ion mass spectroscopy and cathodoluminescence (CL) studies were carried out on GaAs films grown by Ar+ laser-assisted metalorganic molecular beam epitaxy. The Ar+ laser irradiation leads to the formation of a 400-μm-diam spot. In the growth temperature range 425–500 °C, the carbon concentration within the spot is maintained at 1017 cm−3, while that in the area not irradiated by the laser increases from 1017 to 1019 cm−3. The process of decomposition of the triethylgallium molecules and the mechanism by which the carbon concentration is maintained by the laser irradiation are discussed in detail. Low-temperature CL spectra revealed that the CL signal intensity in the selectively grown spot was some ten times greater than that in the area not irradiated by the laser.

Notes: 1. One hundred and twenty-one patients with hyperthyroidism of Graves' disease were treated with antithyroid drugs for 3 years and thyroidal response to an increase or decrease of TSH and the serum thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) activity were studied in relation to the presence or absence of TSH binding inhibiting immunoglobulin (TBII).2. TBII activity was positive in 83% of untreated patients but decreased gradually with time during antithyroid drug therapy. Thyroidal radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) was suppressed by T3 in 86 of 121 treated patients but 16% of suppressible patients had TBII activity. Thyroidal RAIU was not suppressed by T3 in 35 treated patients, and 19 of 35 unsuppressible patients had TBII activity but other 16 patients did not. When suppressible and unsuppressible patients were combined, suppression of serum T4 and thyroidal RAIU by T3 tended to be less in the presence of TBII activity.3. TSI activity was detected in the sera of untreated patients but did not correlate with TBII activity. TSI activity was undetectable after treatment for 3 years irrespective of presence or absence of TBII activity and T3-suppressibility.4. TSH, T4 and T3 elevation in response to 500 μg thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) was normal in all treated patients irrespective of presence or absence of TBII activity and T3-suppressibility.5. It is suggested that in vivo thyroidal responsiveness to an increase or decrease of endogenous TSH did not correlate with the presence or absence of TBII activity after long-term therapy with antithyroid drugs.

Notes: A small synchrotron radiation source in the hard-x-ray region was conceptually designed and its injection scheme, dynamic aperture, and beam instabilities were studied. Synchrotron radiation with the critical wavelength of 0.1 nm is emitted from a pair of superconducting bending magnets. The storage ring has only one pair of quadrupole magnets to save its drift space. The decay time of the kicker magnet and the angle between the central orbit and the orbit of the injected beam were optimized by computer simulation. The reduction of the dynamic aperture due to the errors of the bending field is less than 20%. Considerations of possible instabilities showed that there is no critical instability up to the beam current of 200 mA when the beam is injected with higher energy than 650 MeV.

Notes: First reports on the characteristics and applications of GeO2-SiO2 glass films formed by laser-induced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) are presented. At a low temperature (200–300 °C), solid solutions of ternary compounds can be obtained by laser-induced CVD. It is shown that these GeO2-SiO2 ternary films were applicable to planar optical waveguides.

Notes: A maximum cw power of 90 mW at 25 °C was obtained for a GaInAsP/InP laser with a semi-insulating InP current blocking layer grown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy on a p-type InP substrate, a 700-μm-long cavity, and an antireflection coating on the front facet. The 3 dB bandwidth was in excess of 6 GHz with a low parasitic capacitance of 15 pF despite the long cavity. The semi-insulating layer with the resistivity of 5×107 Ω cm was formed by doping only Fe. The current blocking characteristics of the blocking layer with the same configuration as the lasers were examined under various temperatures.

Notes: Summary A three-dimensional, time dependent hydrodynamic primitive equation model was used to simulate the distribution of nocturnal drainage winds, temperature, and turbulence in the California Geysers area. The case studied here (night 2) was under the condition that the ambient airflow was easterly and the direction of main drainage flow was westerly, The computed depth of drainage flow was less than 50 m at the ridge, and increased to 200 m at the valley, which agreed well with the observation. The computed wind speed at the ridge was smaller than the observation, but it agreed well at the valley site, Vertical wind variances measured by a doppler sodar indicated relatively large turbulence despite the fact that stable density stratification dominated throughout the night. The computed vertical wind variances were also larger than those observed over flat terrain, but smaller than the values recorded by the doppler sodar. The computed wind vectors and turbulence were used to simulate the surface concentration of perflourocarbon trace gas. The model used is based on a random-particle statistical method. One particle per second was released for one hour at the source site, and the locations of particles were computed at every 10 sec. An imaginary box of 10x10x4 m (vertical) was considered at each of 39 surface sampling stations, and the number of particles collected for two hours was counted, from which concentration was determined. A cross-correlation coefficient of 0.82 was obtained between the computed and observed concentrations at the 39 sampling stations. Other statistics indicate that twenty percent of the computed concentrations were within a factor of two of the observations, 50% within a factor of 5 and 62% within a factor of 10.

Notes: Summary Two siblings with congenital myopathy showing myasthenic manifestations together with congenital cataract are reported. Their muscle weakness fluctuated and was alleviated by edrophonium chloride. Their serum creatine kinase activity was elevated, and the waning phenomenon was observed on repetitive nerve stimulation. Biopsied muscle showed degenerative changes with type 1 fibre predominance and abnormal morphology of neuromuscular junctions.
