Notes: The generation of dirt spikes in the discharge of a clean pulsed metal vapor laser is measured under various operating conditions, such as a change in pulse repetition rates, laser tube temperatures, buffer gas pressures, and charging voltages. It is shown that the dirt spikes will increase in magnitude for such conditions that the pulse repetition rate decreases, the laser tube temperature decreases, and the buffer gas pressure increases. The ratio of the dirt spike to the charging voltage will also increase as the charging voltage decreases. All experimental results are well explained by theoretical analyses. These results lead to a number of useful suggestions for the operation of a pulsed metal vapor laser.

Notes: A longitudinal, discharge-heated copper vapor laser with an internal diameter of 4.2 cm and a length of 150 cm has been constructed. At the charging voltage of 14.5 kV, buffer gas pressure of 20 Torr, pulse repetition rate of 6.5 kHz, and laser tube temperature of 1450 °C; the laser offers an average power of 25 W with excellent stability and requires a minimum amount of maintenance.

Notes: It is found that the appearance of high reverse-voltage spikes on the thyratron anode in the discharge of metal vapor lasers due to high laser impedances can easily be monitored by a dc current meter in series with the bypass inductor of the discharge circuit. Experiments are demonstrated using a copper vapor laser. Results show that the proposed impedance monitor is effective, reliable, and economical. The meter deflection corresponding to acceptable, well-behaved thyratron operation can be obtained easily by the residual ionization-control method using a clean laser tube. By keeping the deflection within a specified limit, the lifetime of thyratron can greatly be extended.

Notes: Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (2223) and Bi2 Sr2 Ca3 Cu4 O12 (2234) superconducting phases have been identified by convergent beam electron diffraction. The c parameters of the 2223 and 2234 phases are 37.6 and 44 A(ring), respectively. The two phases have the same symmetry; their common point group is mmm. Both phases are modulated, but the modulations are different from and considerably weaker than that in the unleaded Bi2 Sr2 CaCu2 O8 . This work confirms for the first time the existence of the 2234 phase.

Notes: Y-Ba-Cu-O films were deposited on Al-coated Si substrates by the plasma-spray method. The Al buffer layer appears to be effective in yielding crack-free adhesive Y-Ba-Cu-O films. Resistance measurements indicate that the films exhibit a superconducting phase below 90 K. Results of x-ray microanalysis and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm that the Al buffer forms an Al2O3 layer and prevents precipitation of Cu at the film/substrate interface.

Notes: Summary 143 patients with acute hepatitis A observed during a common source outbreak were tested for IgM class antibody to hepatitis A virus (IgM anti-HAV) by commercially available solid phase radioimmunoassays. All patients were IgM anti-HAV positive though six of them were initially negative when tested within three days after the onset of symptoms. The levels of IgM anti-HAV peaked two to four weeks after onset, and declined gradually thereafter. The probability of IgM anti-HAv positivity was 25% at the end of the sixth month, and 3.4% at the end of the ninth month after onset. No significant sex or age difference in the persistence of IgM anti-HAV was observed. It was suggested that the timing of the assay and the level of IgM anti-HAV should be considered in the etiological diagnosis of acute hepatitis.

Notes: Convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) is a powerful technique for symmetry study of crystal. It has widespread application in physics and material sciences, as demonstrated in a recent superconducting oxide study. Using this technique, we have studied Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors with a transition temperature of about 40°K and Ba-Y-Cu-O superconductors with a critical temperature (Tc) of about 90°K. We have found that in Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors the superconducting phase La2-xBaxCuO4-y has a distorted K2NiF4-type structure and the space group Fmmm. The two other phases in Ba-La-Cu-O superconductors have also been studied. In our Ba-Y-Cu-O superconductors, the Ba2YCu3O7-x compound, which is responsible for 90°K superconductivity, has two different space groups: An orthorhombic space group Pmmm and a tetragonal space group P4mm or P4/mmm.
