Notes: Contents A method of simulating permanent magnets in analytical approach for the transfer-matrix-method is given. The method is suited for deriving analytical expressions of the magnetic fields and electromagnetic forces in electrical machines containing permanent magnets. The method was applied to the analysis of a long-stator linear synchronous motor with permanent magnet excitation. Measurements of the forces in the 150-pole Samarium-Cobalt type linear synchronous motor for electric propulsion were used to verify this permanent magnet modeling analysis. Comparison with experimentally obtained results shows a very good agreement.

Notes: Summary Four cases of jugular foramen neurinoma, extending from the posterior fossa into the temporal bone through the jugular foramen, are reported. The information provided by magnetic resonance imaging was compared with that by computed tomography. Due to the excellent sensitivity, the absence of bone artifacts, and the ease of imaging in any plane, magnetic resonance imaging gave better information particularly about the location of the tumour than X-CT scan did. It included the dumb-bell-shaped tumour through the jugular foramen, the extra-axial nature of the tumour, and the precise anatomical relationships between the tumour and the facial and acoustic nerves or the internal carotid artery. Sagittal and coronal views clearly demonstrated the superior and inferior margins of the tumour. The information is very useful not only for preoperative diagnosis but also for planning the surgical approaches and postoperative follow-up.

Notes: Summary In this paper we compute the Feynman transition amplitude which describes the finite-time propagation of fermionic fields and use this result to extend to QCD the functional formulation of the temporal gauge (A o=0), already known for pure Yang-Mills theories.

Notes: We obtained damage-resistant crystals of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) by reducing organic impurities in the growth solution. To prevent organic impurity exuded from the wall of the growth vessel, Pyrex glass was used. The residual organic impurities, which mainly derived from KDP raw powder, were reduced by photochemical dissociation using a combination of ultraviolet light and an oxidant (hydrogen peroxide). The resultant total organic carbon of the solution was less than 0.1 ppm. The damage threshold of the crystals grown from this solution was always high (20–22 J/cm2), which is about three times higher than that of crystals grown by conventional methods.

Notes: The EMG of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the masticatory muscles during function has been observed in relation to opposing occlusal contacts. The purpose was to investigate the possible developmental mechanism of pain which can occur in the muscles.Six subjects with normal function and ten patients were studied. EMG activities of temporal, masseter, sternocleidomastoid (insertion) and sternocleidomastoid (middle) were recorded by surface and needle electrodes.EMG activity was recorded from the insertion of the sternocleidomastoid during activity of the masticatory muscles in tapping, clenching, and mastication. On the other hand little activity was registered from the middle of the sternocleidomastoid. The amplitude of the EMG of SCM-I increased as the occlusal force increased. During chewing the sternocleidomastoid muscle was functioning more actively on the working side than on the non-working side. On the patients, EMG activities of the muscles were of low amplitude and low frequency with no synchronization with the chewing movement, suggesting hyperactivity of the muscle.

Notes: Mandibular movement and masticatory performance were evaluated in the edentulous patients with an experimental denture using posterior artificial teeth of different occlusal schemes in order to determine the criterion for the selection of posterior artificial teeth.Lower masticatory performance was observed with non-anatomic posterior teeth than with semi-anatomic or anatomic ones regardless of the condition of residual ridge and inclination of the horizontal condylar guidance. The value of the lateral component of the masticatory cycle was closely related to the inclination of the cusp and the value of masticatory performance. This suggested strongly that the component could be a criteria for the selection of the type of the artificial posterior teeth.

Notes: An objective parameter for the electromyographic evaluation of the masticatory function of edentulous patients was studied. The normal ranges of the parameters for such subjects were also established. This study focused on the time parameter of electromyography, which is one of the most reproducible parameters. The variation coefficient of the time parameters (interval and duration) were revealed to be reliable and reproducible for the evaluation of masticatory functions.

Notes: A series of experiments focused on high neutron yield has been performed with the Gekko-XII green laser system [Nucl. Fusion 27, 19 (1987)]. Deuterium–tritium (DT) neutron yield of 1013 and pellet gain of 0.2% have been achieved. Based on the experimental data from more than 70 irradiations, the scaling laws of the neutron yield and the related physical quantities have been studied. Comparison of the experimental neutron yield with that obtained by using a one-dimensional fluid code has led to the conclusion that most of the neutrons produced in the stagnation phase of the computation are not observed in the experiment because of fuel–pusher mixing, possibly induced by the Rayleigh–Taylor instability. The coupling efficiency and ablation pressure have been calculated using the ion temperature measured experimentally. A coupling efficiency of 5.5% and an ablation pressure of 50 Mbar have been obtained.

Notes: Detailed performances of a laser triggered dielectric switch (LTDS) are described. Thin polypropylene films of 25 or 35 μm in thickness were used for insulation of the spark gap. Maintenance-free operation was achieved by automatic winding of the film after each laser shot. A square optical pulse of 1 ns duration with a rise time of less than 350 ps was generated by using a fast Pockels cell driven by the LTDS with good reproducibility. The switching jitter was measured to be less than the detection limit of 100 ps. Using the LTDS, a single pulse was selected from a mode-locked pulse train with the success probability of better than 95%. Comparison of the performance of the LTDS with other switching devices are given.

Notes: Power emission from a flux-flow-type Josephson oscillator with a thin-film coupling method is studied experimentally. The thickness of one electrode of the oscillator is made thin enough to allow electromagnetic fields generated by the oscillator to be emitted through the thin-film electrode. Radiation power from the oscillator is detected with superconductor-insulator-superconductor detectors, which are fabricated on top of the oscillator. Experimental results show that sufficient power can be obtained from the oscillator by using the thin-film coupling method when the thickness of the electrode is comparable to the London penetration depth. The results obtained are in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions. The thin-film coupling method will be useful when the oscillator is connected to external circuits, such as an impedance matching circuit.
