    Notes: Heterodyne detection of light scattered from capillary waves is used to study the surface properties of the air–liquid interface. A diffraction grating is employed to select a precise ripplon wave vector k and to provide a stable local oscillator field. The optics are designed to form a real image of the grating on the surface, thus allowing the measurements to be reproducible within 5%. The power spectrum detected in frequency domain is well fitted by a Lorentzian profile for the range of ripplon wave vectors 260≤k≤390 cm−1. The shape of the scattered spectra at each wave vector is corrected for the incident beam profile by effecting a convolution of the Lorentzian and Gaussian functional forms. The surface tensions and the kinematic viscosities of water, anisole, and ethanol are deduced from the ripplon dispersion relation corrected to the first order in damping, and found to be within 5% of the literature values. Thus we confirm the validity of approximations made for the instrumental function and the dispersion relation.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Komplexverbindungcis- und trans-[Cr(en)2(NH2CH3)2]Br(B10H10) wurden synthetisiert. IR-spektroskopisch konnte gezeigt werden, daß die die negative Ladung tragenden Wasserstoffatome des B10H 10 2− .Anions mit dem Proton der Aminogruppe des koordinativ gebundenen Amins unter Ausbildung des Bindungssystems N-H-H-B in Wechselwirkung treten. Die erhaltenen Komplexsalze weisen eine hohe Dichte (d 20=1.55 g/cm3 für dascis-Isomere und 1.47 g/cm3 für das trans-Isomere) und eine hohe thermische Stabilität (230–250°) auf. Bei 250–270° dissoziieren sowohl diecis- als auch dietrans-Verbindung unter gleichzeitiger Substitution von zwei Methylaminmolekülen in der Koordinationssphäre des Chrom(III)-Ions durch die Anionen Br− und B10H 10 2− . Der Prozeß wird durch die topochemische Gleichungf(α)=(1 −α)2/3 (Reaktion an der Phasengrenzfläche) beschrieben und ist durch hohe Werte der kinetischen Parameter charakterisiert:E a =510–524 kJ/mol, logA=49.9–50.2. Es wurde festgestellt, daß der durch Analyse der Gasentwicklung unter nichtisothermen Bedingungen bestimmte Wert vonE a um 220 kJ/mol abnimmt, wenn die Aufheizgeschwindigkeit von 5.0 auf 7.5 K/min erhöht wird. Dieser Befund kann damit erklärt werden, daß sich die Intervelle, in denen diecis-trans-Isomerisierung und die Ligandensubstituierung verlaufen, mit steigender Aufheizgeschwindigkeit einander nähern und schließlich überlappen; die Aktivierungsenergie des Isomerisierungsprozesses kompensiert dann einen Teil der für die Aktivierung der Ligandensubstituierung erforderlichen Energie.
    Abstract: Резюме Синтезированы смеша нно-лигандные комплексные соедине ния цис- и транс[Cr(en)2(NH2CH3)2¦ Br(B10H10). транс[Cr(en)2(NH2CH3)2¦Br(B10H10). ИК спектроскопическ им методом показано, ч то атомы водорода аниона B10H 10 2- , не сущие отрицательный заряд, взаимодействуют с пр отоном аминогруппы координ ированного амина с об разованием связи N-H-H-В. Полученные комплексные соли име ют высокую плотность (d 20=1.55 г/см3 для цис-изомера иd 20=1.47 г/см3 для транс-изо мера) и обладают высок ой (230–250 °С) термостабильно стью. При 250–270 °С как цис-, так и Tpaн c-[Cr(en)2(NH2CH3)2]Br(B10H10) диссоциируют за счет реакции одновре менного замещения дв ух молекул метиламина в координ ационной сфере иона хрома(Ш) вне шнесферными анионам и Вr– и B10H 10 2- . Процесс описывает ся топохимическим урав нениемf(α)=(1-а)2/3 (реакция на межфазной границе) и х арактеризуются высокими значениями кинетических параме тровE a =510–524 кДж/моль, logА=49.9–50.2. Найдено, что велич инаЕ a для процесса замещения амина в цис [Сr(еn)2(NH2СН3)2]Вr(В10H10), измеряемая методом н еизотермической кин етики по выделяющемуся газоо бразному лиганду, при увеличении скорости нагрева от 5.0 д о 7.5 град/мин уменьшается на 220 кДж/моль. Этот резу льтат объяснен тем, что при у величении скорости нагрева тем пературные интервал ы протекания реакций цис-транс изо меризации и замещения лигандов сближаются, а затем и перекрываются. При эт ом активация процесса изомеризац ии компенсирует част ь энергии, необходимой для акти вации процесса замещения лигандов.
    Notes: Abstract The mixed-ligand complex compoundscis- andtrans-[Cr(en)2(NH2CH3)2]Br(B10H10) were synthetized. It was demonstrated by IR spectroscopy that the hydrogen atoms of the anions B10H 10 2− carrying the negative charge interact with the proton of the amino group in the coordinated amine, forming the bond system N-H-H-B. The complex salts obtained have high densities (d 20=1.55 g/cm3 and 1.47 g/cm3 for thecis andtrans isomer, respectively) and high thermal stability 230–250 °C. At 250–270 °C both thecis and thetrans compound dissociate, with simultaneous substitution of two methylamine molecules in the coordination sphere of the chromium(III) ion by the anions Br− and B10H 10 2− . The process is described by the topochemical equationf(α)=(1−α)2/3 (reaction on the interface of the phases), and is characterized by high values of the kinetic parameters: Ea=510–524 kJ/mol, logA=49.9–50.2. We found that the value ofE a for the amine substitution process in thecis compound, determined by evolved gas analysis under non-isothermal conditions, decreases by 220 kJ/mol when the heating rate is increased from 5.0 to 7.5 deg/min. This finding can be explained in that when the heating rate is increased, the intervals in which thecis- trans isomerization and ligand substitution reactions proceed come closer to one another, and finally overlap; the activation energy of the isomerization process then compensates part of the energy required for activation of the ligand substitution process.

    Notes: Abstract An impression test method and analytical procedure have been used to generate the flow characteristics of aluminium, copper, nickel and mild steel. Unlike conventional tests, the flow curves of these materials can be obtained by precise measurements of the displacement of a flat-ended circular cylinder into a specimen at predetermined speeds, during which the indenter makes an impression on the surface of the specimen as a function of the applied load. The depth of penetration at an equivalent stress, speed being constant, is found to be linearly dependent on the diameter of the indenter, varying over a range up to 2 mm in a typical metallographic sample. Thus a simple normalization of displacement with diameter makes the stress-penetration relation independent of indenter size. These results are compared with those obtained from conventional tests and the merits of evaluating parameters by impression tests are discussed.

    Notes: A relatively simple yield model is developed for isotropic, porous rocks which yield in a ductile manner. The flow rule and yield function are derived using an adaptation of the work-balance approach of critical state soil mechanics. This adaptation allows for the dissipation of work by frictional and volume change mechanisms, including the dissipation of frictional work at sensibly constant plastic volumetric strain. The yield model uses two material parameters - a basic frictional parameter and a plastic volumetric strain adjustment parameter which is assumed to be constant for the yield locus corresponding to a particular specific volume. The model gives excellent fits to yield loci for two limestones, a chalk and gypsum plaster prepared at different initial void ratios.
