Notes: Abstract The magnetic and electric hyperfine splitting frequencies ¦gμ N B HF/h¦ ande 2 qQ/h of the 5/2−1/2[541] ground state of 14h 185Ir in Ni were measured with nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei to be 360.8(7) MHz and +6.7(2.0) MHz, respectively. The ground state magnetic dipole moment and electric quadrupole moment of185Ir are deduced to be ¦μ¦=2.601 (14)μ N andQ=−1.9(5)b, taking values for the hyperfine field and electric field gradient of BHF=−454.9 (2.3) kG and eq=−0.151(4) × 1017 V/cm2, respectively. The negative quadrupole moment is in agreement with nuclear-orientation data and proves again theI π K=5/2− 1/2 ground state configuration.

Notes: Abstract The magnetic hyperfine splitting frequenciesν M=¦gμ NBHF/h.¦ of the 11/2− isomeric states129m Xe (T1/2=8.9d) and131mXe (T1/2=11.8d) in Fe were measured with nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei at temperatures of 10–15 mK as 188.0(1) MHz and 209.8(1) MHz, respectively, the samples being prepared with the technique of recoil implantation after (α, x n) reactions. The magnetic moments of129m Xe and131m Xe are deduced to be (−)0.8914(6)μ N and (−)0.9943(6)μ N, respectively. The missing γ-anisotropies for allγ-transitions following the decay of 36.4d 127Xe indicateI=1/2 for the ground state spin of127Xe.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance on oriented nuclei has been detected for the first time via the destruction of the anisotropy of characteristic Lx-rays. The new method can be applied to isomeric states which decay only via highly converted transitions, for which the standard NMR-ON technique — detection of NMR via the anisotropy of γ-rays — is not applicable. The X-NMR-ON technique has been used to measure the magnetic hyperfine splitting of193mpt (Iπ=1322+; E=149.8 keV; T1/2= 4.3 d) to be ¦ gμ NBHF/h¦=111.3 (3) MHz. with the known hyperfine field of −1280(27) kG the magnetic moment of193mpt is deduced to be ¦μ¦=0.7417(14) μN. This magnetic moment differs strongly from the known magnetic moments of the 13/2+ isomeric states in Hg and Pb and195mPt.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear orientation experiments were performed on189Pt (Iπ=3/2−; T1/2=11 h),191pt (Iπ=3/2−; T1/2=2.8 d) and195mptπ=3/2−; T1/2=4.0 d) in an Os single crystal at temperatures down to 10 mK. Preliminary results for the quadrupole splitting νo=e2qQ/h are +48 (9), +39 (6), and −87 (12) MHz for189ptOs,191ptOs, and195mptOs, respectively. Preliminary results for the quadrupole moments are −0.8 (4), −0.6 (3), and +1.4 (7) b for189pt,191pt, and195mpt, respectively. In addition, the quadrupole subresonance structure of189pt and191pt in Fe was measured with quadrupole-interaction resolved NMR-ON spectroscopy. The results for the magnetic hyperfine splitting νM=¦gμNBHF/h¦ and νQ are:189ptFe: νM=277.9 (1) MHz; νQ=+1.39 (5) MHz.191ptFe: νM=320.17 (3) MHZ; νQ=+1.39 (3) MHz. The ratio of the quadrupole moments of191pt and189pt is deduced to be Q (191Pt/Ql89pt)=+1.00 (4). The negative quadrupole moments of189pt and191pt indicate a predominantly oblate shape of the ground states.

Notes: Abstract NMR-ON measurements were performed on131mXe (Iπ=11/2−; T1/2=12.0 d) in Fe, the sample being prepared by recoil implantation after the130Te(α,3n)131mXe compound reaction at Eα=40 Mev. The hyperfine splitting μNBHF/h¦, extrapolated to zero external magnetic field, was found to be 209.9(1) MHz. Taking BHF=+1523(8) kG for the hyperfine field of XeFe, the magnetic moment of131mXe is deduced to be (−)0.994(5) μN. As a byproduct, the zero-field hyperfine splitting of129mXe (Iπ=11/2−; T1/2=8.9d) in Fe was measured as 188.1(1) MHz, with which a magnetic moment of (−)0.891(5) μN is deduced for129mXe.

Notes: Abstract A facility for Nuclear Implantation into Cold On-Line Equipment (NICOLE) is being installed at the new on-line isotope separator ISOLDE 3 at CERN. The first on-line run was in the beginning of July 1988. The low temperature equipment has been successfully tested and first off-line experiments on various isotopes have been performed. NMR/ON has been done on vaious isotopes (Co, Xe, Pt, Au) in iron host. First experience with the top-loading dilution refrigertor (Oxford Instruments Limited) shows that it performs very well. The cooling power is 400 μW at 100 mK and 34 μW at 25 mK. The base temperature can be kept continuously well below 5 mK. NMR/ON can be performed at temperatures below 5.5 mK. The base temperature on-line is expected to be lower then 6 mK. The sample can be cooled down from room temperature to 10 mK within two hours, to 6 mK within 3 hours which is not only important for off-line but also for on-line experiments when samples have to be changed to remove long lived daughter activity. The latest results will be reported.

Notes: Abstract The low-temperature diffusion of hydrogen and deuterium in Ta was investigated using the method of perturbed angular correlation. In an ealier paper we reported the results of measurements above 4 K. These experiments have now been extended down to 10 mK. We found that the configuration of trapped hydrogen and deuterium changes, if the sample is cooled from 4.2 K to 10 mK. We suggest that this change is due to a transition of an extended to a more localized wave function of H (D).

Notes: Abstract Nuclear orientation and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments were performed on185, 187, 189Pt isotopes oriented in Fe and single crystal Zn at temperatures down to about 6 mK. The hyperfine splitting frequencies of185Pt and187Pt in iron were determined to be 164.9(2) and 261.1(2) MHz, respectively. With the hyperfine field of −126.1(2.5) T, the g-factors are deduced to be |g(185Pt)|=0.172(3) and |g(187Pt)|=0.272(5). The spectroscopic quadrupole moment of187Pt was found to be negative with magnitude similar to that of189Pt, indicating a predominantly oblate ground state deformation for both isotopes. The spectroscopic quadrupole moment of185Pt was found to be positive, with the ratio Q(185Pt)/Q(189Pt)=−3.6(9), clearly indicating a change to prolate ground state deformation.
