    Notes: Abstract A linear extension [x 1〈x2〈...〈xt] of a finite ordered set P=(P, 〈) is super greedy if it can be obtained using the following procedure: Choose x 1 to be a minimal element of P; suppose x 1,...,x i have been chosen; define p(x) to be the largest j≤i such that x j〈x if such a j exists and 0 otherwise; choose x i+1 to be a minimal element of P-{ x 1,...,x i} which maximizes p. Every finite ordered set P can be represented as the intersection of a family of super greedy linear extensions, called a super greedy realizer of P. The super greedy dimension of P is the minimum cardinality of a super greedy realizer of P. Best possible upper bounds for the super greedy dimension of P are derived in terms of |P-A| and width (P-A), where A is a maximal antichain.

    Notes: Abstract A method for measuring thermal diffusivity in one of the layers of a two-layer composite sample has been described. The heat transfer problem of a two-layer sample associated with pulse thermal diffusivity measurements has been analyzed for two cases: exponential and square-wave pulses. According to our measurements, a triangular heat-pulse function approximates reasonably well the output of the Nd-glass laser. In this paper, an expression is derived for the temperature transient at the rear face of two-layer sample being subjected to a triangular heat-pulse input on the front face. The analytical solution of the problem forms the basis of our method of data reduction. This solution has been programmed for computer processing of the data. The method described here has been successfully tested by limited measurements on copper and iron.

    Notes: Abstract The laser pulse method can be successfully applied to the measurement of thermal diffusivity of isotropic materials subject to some assumptions. For anisotropic materials, this method is applicable to the measurement of principal thermal diffusivity only on the condition that there is no difference in direction between the principal axis and that of the temperature gradient. After analyzing the heat conduction process in an anisotropic solid, it has been shown that large errors in the measurement of thermal diffusivity would exist if the direction of the principal axis deviates inconspicuously from that of the temperature gradient. The experimental results of thermal diffusivity of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with various deviation angles have been compared with the analytical results. The laser pulse method is not applicable to measurements on semitransparent pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN). We adopted a two-layer composite sample to measure the thermal diffusivity of PBN in the c direction and a particular graphite-PBN composite sample has been prepared which has a very low thermal resistance at the interface. The thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of PG (below 2300°C) and PBN (below 1000°C) are given.

    Notes: Abstract The frequency response model of the soleus muscle of the cat was determined as a function of various firing rate and recruitment control strategies and at various force oscillation levels. We found that the basic frequency response models of the muscle during individual force oscillations at various control strategies in which the motor unit population of the muscle was fully recruited to obtain 50 per cent and up to 100 per cent of the maximum force, either concurrently with firing rate increase or at constant firing rate, were nearly identical. The model consisted of a second-order, linear low-pass filter with double poles at 1·85 Hz and a pure time delay of 16 ms. The model resulting from only firing rate increase from the frequency of fusion of the smallest motor unit to the maximum tetanic rate of the muscle while all the motor units were continuously active was nonlinear, and depended on the force's oscillation level. This nonlinear response of the rate coding process is also identified as the source of the increased harmonic distortion in the model where the initial 50 per cent of the force was generated by fully recruiting all the motor units, and the final 50 per cent of the force was generated by firing rate increase. We concluded that the basic frequency response model of a muscle under conditions similar to voluntary contraction consists of a linear, second-order system which is robust and independent of control strategy and force perturbation level.

    Notes: Abstract Kinematics predicts the severe suppression of low-energy (〈1 GeV) secondary antiprotons in the Galactic cosmic rays. Thus the observation several years ago of a finite flux of low-energy antiprotons could not be explained with existing models of cosmic ray propagation, which led to a plethora of theoretical speculation. We have recently flown a balloon-borne instrument to measure the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray $$\bar p's$$ , and have found no antiprotons in the energy interval 200–640 MeV (corrected to the top of the atmosphere). This yields an upper limit to the $$\bar p/p$$ ratio of 5.5×10−5 (90% confidence level), well below and hence contradicting the earlier result.
