Notes: The thermal comparator is shown to be a rapid, accurate method for determining the thermal conductivity of liquid foods. Increasing solids content decreased thermal conductivity for apple juice concentrate, orange juice concentrate, and milk samples. Equations for predicting the thermal conductivity of apple juice, orange juice, and milk are shown to be specific for each commodity. A comparison of apple juice and orange juice suggests that qualitative attributes of the solids fraction as well as the quantity present are important in determining thermal conductivity.

Notes: Mechanical properties from cyclic low strain testing, texture profile parameters and thermal conductivity were evaluated for 7 types of commercial sausage products ranging in moisture content from 27.7% to 62.4% and aw from 0.857 to 0.993. Hardness, fracturability, the apparent moduli, stress al 20% compression, mechanical hysteresis loss, and strain energy all increased with decreasing moisture level, while springiness and the degree of elasticity decreased. Moisture had no significant effect on cohesiveness. A linear relationship was observed between the aw and the effective mole fraction of water in the brine, the exact nature of which depended on the thermal process which the product had received. Thermal conductivity decreased with decreasing moisture in a linear manner.

Notes: We describe a technique for preparation of molecules in single ||m|| levels involving saturated laser optical pumping on molecular P, R, and Q transitions. This technique is not limited to small rotational quantum numbers j. It allows the determination of the populations of ||m|| levels for arbitrary distribution functions f ( j,m) or alternatively, the determination of all moments of f ( j,m). In principle, this method is able to completely determine the angular distribution of j vectors. Experimental verification of the high ||m||-state purity achieved in Na2 supersonic beams, as well as of inherent limitations due to hyperfine interaction is provided. For illustration, experimental data on laser-induced alignment, the dependence of the flow induced molecular alignment, and on Δm-propensity rules in differential rotationally inelastic scattering are presented.

Notes: Abstract LetG be a 2-connected rooted graph of rankr andA, B two (rooted) spanning trees ofG We show that the maximum number of exchanges of leaves that can be required to transformA intoB isr 2−r+1 (r〉0). This answers a question by L. Lovász. There is a natural reformulation of this problem in the theory ofgreedoids, which asks for the maximum diameter of the basis graph of a 2-connected branching greedcid of rankr. Greedoids are finite accessible set systems satisfying the matroid exchange axiom. Their theory provides both language and conceptual framework for the proof. However, it is shown that for general 2-connected greedoids (not necessarily constructed from branchings in rooted graphs) the maximum diameter is 2r−1.

Notes: Summary Authors report one case of intravertebral vacuum phenomenon associated with a multiple myeloma. Initially, there occurred a collapse and a lysis of the L4 vertebral body. Two months later, after chemotherapy and cobalt-therapy, X-ray examination showed a vacuum cleft phenomenon within the body of L4 and a backward displacement of the L4 posterior wall. At the same time the patient complained of a cruralgia. Recovery occurred after decompression surgery. Histologic sampling of the L4 vertebral body revealed bone necrosis without any abnormal plasmocytosis. Authors draw attention to the neurological complications occurring in the course of the vertebral necrosis and to the fact that, even in case of multiple myeloma, the occurrence of a transverse vacuum cleft may result from osteonecrosis.

Notes: Abstracts Some aspects of processing, microstructure and properties of the various types of silicon nitride are discussed. Special emphasis is placed on the relationships between powder properties, process conditions, densification and microstructure, as well as the interdependence between microstructure and properties. After summarizing the areas of crystal structure and thermodynamic properties, and processing of the different types of Si3N4, the state-of-the-art of dense and reaction-bonded silicon nitride is given. For both types the formation mechanisms and microstructure, relationships between powder properties, additives (in the case of dense Si3N4), process conditions, and densification and microstructure, as well as data and microstructural effects of various mechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical properties, are outlined. Advanced processing techniques, such as sintering, gas-pressure sintering, post-sintering, and the different routes of hot-isostatic pressing (starting with powder compacts, reaction-bonded Si3N4 or pre-sintered Si3N4 and the resulting properties, are discussed.

Notes: Summary Mechanical, physical and chemical properties of ceramic materials are strongly dependent on the microstructure. Thus, the optimization of the microstructure plays a key role for a further improvement of advanced ceramics. The basis of microstructural optimization of ceramics is the relationship between processing, microstructure and properties. In these three fields, at present, extreme demands are put on microstructural characterization of ceramic materials. Microstructural characterization implies, besides the stereometric parameters, the analysis of the chemical composition and structure of the phases present in the material which in many cases have dimensions on an atomic level. In this paper the need for microanalytical characterization of advanced ceramics is pointed out from the materials point of view. Particularly, three topics are discussed: problems and development lines in the field of advanced ceramics, consequences for analytical investigations which are deduced from these problems, and typical examples of analytical problems, and efforts to solve these problems by applying different analytical methods. These topics will be discussed based on examples of highstrength and high-temperature ceramic materials, monolithic ceramics and ceramics composites.

Notes: Abstract Differential cross sections for state-to-state rotationally inelastic electron-Na2 scattering, with the molecule being in the vibrational levelv′'=31, are measured at a collision energy of 150 eV. Angular momentum transfer of up to Δj=26 is observed, which is even more than previously obtained for the vibrational ground statev′'=0. Good agreement is found with theoretical results from a spectator scattering model. This work, in general, elucidates the role of vibrational excitation in collision dynamics under vibrationally sudden conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: SiC-Fiber Reinforced Ti 6 Al4 V Alloy: Effect of TiC and TiN Interlayers on the Reaction Zone.Processing and properties of SiC-fiber reinforced Ti 6 Al4 V alloys are briefly summarized. In order to avoid the degradation of the SiC-fibers caused by interfacial reactions, TiC and TiN interlayers were incorporated and their influence on the formation of the reaction zone was investigated. The reaction fiber-matrix was determinated by high temperature X-ray diffraction and Auger electron depth profiling.Coating with TiC and TiN cannot completely avoid fiber damage and interfacial reactions. However, due to the low reaction rate, at short process times (ca. 〈 1 h) the formation of titanium silicides can be prevented. Based on these results, the coating of the SiC-fibers by TiN, but especially TiC, gives positive aspects for further improving these composites.
