Notizen: The three largest water utilities in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area (WMA) rely on the Potomac River and its reservoirs for water supply. These utilities have committed to a periodic review of the system's adequacy to meet future demands. In 1990, 1995, 2000, and again in 2004 (for publication in 2005) the utilities requested that the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin (ICPRB) conduct a 20-year water demand and resource adequacy study to fulfill this need. The selection of the five-year interval provides multiple benefits. It allows regular updates and incorporation of recent demographic forecasts, and it increases visibility and understanding of the adequacy of the region's water resources. It also provides adequate time to conduct research on the physical system and to incorporate modifications based on this research into subsequent studies. The studies and lessons learned are presented in this case study of the WMA. The work has been a natural outgrowth of a long history of cooperative water supply planning and management among the main WMA water utilities and ICPRB.

Notizen: Summary Evaluation of a series of 12 chordoid sarcomas suggests that there is a wider range of histological features in this entity then previously appreciated. Six of the lesions had a typical tumor cell organization and a mixture of cellular and myxoid stromal components, while the remaining cases were atypical because of a more solid growth pattern. Four of the 12 cases, that included both typically myxoid and more cellular examples, had small foci with hyalinized stroma segragating individual or small groups of tumor cells with and without lacunar spaces. Two atypical cases revealed more extensive and obvious chondrocytic differentiation in recurrent or metastatic lesions and in one of these, the histological pattern was that of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma. Ultrastructural examination of three cases revealed fine structural features of both the tumor cell population and extracellular matrix compatible with chondrocytic differentiation. Results of light and electron microscopy of this series of chordoid sarcoma add further support for categorizing this tumor with other malignant chondrocytic neoplasms. It is probable that chordoid sarcoma and extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma represent the same entity and that this lesion has a close histogenetic relationship to mesenchymal chondrosarcoma.

Notizen: Abstract In previous studies, we have shown that benzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor with diuretic activity confined primarily to the proximal tubule, causes a significant reduction in nephron filtration rate by increasing afferent and efferent arteriolar vascular resistance [30], possibly through an activation of tubuloglomerular feedback mechanism. The present studies were designed to determine if infusion of 1-sar, 8-ala angiotensin II, an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (AIIA) could prevent and reverse the vasoconstriction and resulting reduction in SNGFR with benzolamide. Benzolamide administration to hydropenic rats decreased SNGFR by 5.0±1.3 nl/min and AIIA infusion in these rats completely restored SNGFR to the control, prebenzolamide values. These results occurred when SNGFR was measured in both proximal and distal tubules. In another group of hydropenic rats prior AIIA infusion completely prevented any alteration in SNGFR with benzolamide administration (33.0±2.8 vs. 32.3±1.5 nl/min). Benzolamide administration did increase the late proximal tubular flow rate during AIIA infusion (17.2±1.1 to 23.4±1.1 nl/min,P〈0.01), demonstrating that AIIA did not act by preventing the diuretic action of benzolamide in the proximal tubule. AIIA infusion alone did not alter control SNGFR or nephron plasma flow, suggesting that the effect of AIIA was not that of a non-specific vasodilator. These studies suggest that the renal vasoconstriction and reduction in SNGFR which results from benzolamide administration is mediated by the local action of angiotensin II.

Notizen: The addition of IAD pendant groups to PB molecules results in a larger effective chain crosssectional area with consequent decrease in chain entanglements. This causes the rubber to be more complaint at low strains and strain rates. Simultaneously, the IAD structures give rise to polar and H-bond interactions which cause the material to exhibit strong adhesion and to possess high green strength. As a result, the IAD-PB is a relatively rare example of a synthetic polymer with good autoadhesive properties.

Notizen: Electron micrographs of otoconia of fetal mice, as obtained by Nakahara and Bevelander, provide morphological evidence that the otoconia consist of both organic material and calcium carbonate (calcite), contrary to their own conclusions. Calcite is an integral component of otoconia, apparently from their inception. The concept of mineralization by calcite of an already developed organic template (“preotolith”) is shown to be in error.

Notizen: It has been found that flow-induced coalescence occurs at a very rapid rate during the mixing of polymeric fluids. Furthermore, the rheological properties of the dispersed and continuous phases, as well as the nature of the flow field used in their blending, can greatly influence this coalescence. The significance of these findings is that in the development of a mixing scheme to obtain a desired morphology with minimum expenditure of time or energy, attention is usually focused only on the particle breakup aspects of the blending process. The competing coalescence can, however, be accelerated by the same conditions often employed to facilitate particle breakup (e.g., higher shear rates, reduced dispersed-phase viscosity).A better understanding of the mechanism for coalescence of viscoelastic fluids is clearly required. In this manner optimal blending of immiscible polymers can be achieved with respect to both the nature of the final material and the ease with which it is obtained.
