Notes: Abstract  Kinetic parameters (V max and K m) of dehydrogenase activity were determined in order to assess the metabolic response of a soil about 1 year after organic and mineral treatments. The soil was planted with maize (Zea mays) and treated with the following fertilisers: organic (vermicompost; VC), mineral (ammonium phosphate and urea), and an organo-mineral mixture. V max, which represents a measurement of the quantity of enzyme, markedly increased in organic and organo-mineral treatments, indicating that the addition of organic matter caused an increase in dehydrogenase in the active microbial biomass. K m, representing enzyme-substrate affinity and/or different sources of the enzymes, was similar in VC-treated soil and control soil, while it doubled in organo-mineral and mineral treatments. These results suggest that the use of VC did not alter the enzyme-substrate affinity, while mineral fertiliser reduced this affinity or changed the composition and activity of soil microbiota. A positive correlation was found between V max, the metabolic index (dehydrogenase/water-soluble carbon ratio), and the soil organic matter content. The kinetic constants of dehydrogenase activity and the metabolic index may be considered valid parameters to monitor the evolution of microbiological activity in soil.

Notes: The neuroendocrine Type 1 Dahlgren cells of the caudal neurosecretory system of the flounder display characteristic bursting activity, which may increase secretion efficiency. The firing activity pattern in these cells was voltage-dependent; when progressively depolarized, cells moved from silent (approximately −70 mV), through bursting and phasic to tonic firing (〈 −65 mV). Brief (10 s) evoked bursts of spikes were followed by a slow after-depolarization (ADP; amplitude up to 10 mV, duration 10–200 s), which was also voltage-dependent and could trigger a prolonged burst. The ADP was significantly reduced in the absence of external Ca2+ ions or the presence of the L-type Ca2+ channel blocker, nifedipine. BayK 8644 (which increases L-type channel open times) significantly increased ADP duration, whereas the Ca2+-activated nonselective cation channel blocker, flufenamic acid, had no effect. Pharmacological blockade of Ca2+-activated K+ channels, using apamin and charybdotoxin, increased the duration of both ADP and evoked bursts. However, action potential waveform was unaffected by either apamin/charybdotoxin, nifedipine, BayK 8644 or removal of external Ca2+. The short duration (approximately 100 ms), hyperpolarization-activated, postspike depolarizing afterpotentials (DAP), were significantly reduced by nifedipine. We propose that long duration ADPs underlie bursts and that short duration DAPs play a role in modulation of spike frequency.

Notes: Background:  Especially in childhood, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) could offer advantages over subcutaneous therapy. However, limited data on its efficacy is available. Methods:  In four German centres 97 children (age 3–14 years) with allergic rhinoconjunctivitis to grass pollen were enrolled in a prospective, double-blind trial comparing SLIT (Pangramin SLIT®; ALK-SCHERAX, 0.5 μg major allergens, three times per week, 32 months) with placebo. Primary endpoint was a multiple symptom-medication score for changes in seasonal diary entries between the first and third year of the study (SLIT n = 39; placebo n = 38).Results:  The multiple symptom-medication score was significantly reduced by SLIT to 77.3% of the placebo group (P = 0.0498). The subsequent analysis of the single endpoints did not reveal significant differences for symptom scores in favour of SLIT (85.1% of placebo group; P = 0.22). However, the medication score improved significantly (67.1% of placebo group; P = 0.0025). Furthermore, secondary endpoints assessing in vivo immune responses did not differ significantly between the groups. However, retrospective analysis showed some inhomogeneity for clinical and in vitro parameters at the beginning of the study. Allergic side effects with possible relation to the study drug were reported in both groups (SLIT 49%, placebo 27%, P = 0.026).Conclusion:  Our study indicates that SLIT had a positive effect on the reduction of a multiple symptom-medication score, mainly by significantly reducing rescue medication use, but had no significant effect on symptoms alone in children with rhinoconjunctivitis to grass pollen compared with a placebo.

Notes: Abstract In order to test the hypothesis that the early cessation of erythropoietin (Ep) production during hypobaric hypoxia is induced by lowered food intake, we have compared the plasma Ep titer of rats after exposure to continuous hypoxia (42.6 kPa 2259 700 m altitude) for 4 days with that in fed or fasted rats after exposure to discontinuous hypoxia. We found that plasma Ep was rather low after 4 days of continuous hypoxia. However, the Ep titer significantly rose again, when rats were maintained normoxic for 18 h and then exposed to repeated hypoxia for 6 h. Because this was also found in rats which were deprived of food during the normoxic interval and the second hypoxic period, we conclude that the fall of the Ep titer during continuous hypoxia is not primarily due to reduced food intake. In addition, our findings show that fasting per se lowers the Ep-response to hypoxia in normal rats but not exhypoxic rats.

Notes: Abstract. In this article we present explicit formulae for q-differentiation on quantum spaces which could be of particular importance in physics, i.e., q-deformed Minkowski space and q-deformed Euclidean space in three or four dimensions. The calculations are based on the covariant differential calculus of these quantum spaces. Furthermore, our formulae can be regarded as a generalization of Jackson’s q-derivative to three and four dimensions.

Notes: Abstract Absolute Ag, Ta and AuL-shell X-ray cross sections were measured using protons,4He,14N as well as20Ne ions in the energy range of 0.125–4 MeV/amu. By means of single-hole fluorescence yields experimental ionization cross sections were deduced and compared with calculations according to the corrected PWBA model — PWBA(BPCR). With decreasing asymmetry of the collision system the experimental cross sections exceed the predictions of the direct ionization theory. This is caused by an increasing contribution of a competing KL charge exchange mechanism which was investigated in detail for Ne+Ag. The Lapicki and Losonsky capture model was found to fail at energiesE〈1 MeV/amu because adiabatic relaxation effects in the projectileK-shell become important. An estimation by means of the Nikitin model led to more physically comprehensible results at the lowest ion velocities investigated.

Notes: Abstract Mediaeval stained glasses are characterized by a high content of modifier ions responsible for their sensitivity towards atmospheric corrosion. Sulphur dioxide associated with moist air is the main agent responsible for alterations and products involved in the corrosion are mainly sulphates. Micro-organisms are other destructive agents of the glass surface. Some of them metabolize iron and manganese and their intervention in the displacement of such elements is considered.
