    Notes: Abstract A search has been carried out for neutral charm production in 5,108 proton-emulsion interactions at 400 GeV/c. Nine charm candidates have been observed in our fiducial volume which extends from 100 μm-1,000 μm in the forward cone. One of these is a 4-prong and the others are 2-prong events with opening angle〉10 mrad and momenta of both decay tracks〉150 MeV/c. Search for associated charm decays was made in an extended fiducial volume around the primary stars of these nine candidates. This yielded two neutral 2-prong events, one associated with the 4-prong and the other with a 2-prong candidate. All unassociated candidates are consistent with being backgrounds due toK s , Λ decays, neutral interactions and γ conversions whereas the background to associated events is negligible. Based on the two associated decays the inclusive cross section forD 0, −0 production is determined as 27±20 μb/nucleon. Detailed measurements on the 4-prong candidate lead to the identification of one decay track as an electron and another as a kaon. This is interpreted as a semi-leptonic, Cabbibo favouredD 0/D −0 decay.

    Notes: Abstract  Visual feedback is one of the key elements in on-line control of smooth manual tracking. To in- vestigate the effects basal ganglia dysfunction have on visual feedback control, we have tested six advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients in comparison with normal controls using visually guided wrist tracking tasks. Tracking performance was assessed under three visual conditions: (1) both guiding target and movement cursor were displayed continuously; (2) the target display was turned off for the second half of each trial; or (3) the cursor display, but not the target, was turned off for the second half of each trial. Thus, for the second half of each trial under conditions 2 and 3, no visual feedback of the relationship between the target and the cursor was available. Results showed that although PD patients had significantly larger tracking errors than controls, and errors significantly increased in both PD patients and controls after withdrawing either visual cue, increases in tracking errors in PD were not significantly different from those in controls. Nor were any significant changes found in the frequency (6–8 Hz) or magnitude of the PD patient’s action tremor after withdrawing visual feedback. These results suggest that on-line movement control of wrist tracking movements in advanced PD is not especially reliant on visual feedback. In conjunction with our previous study of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, the present results confirm that the basal ganglia is less involved in visual guidance of smooth manual tracking than the cerebellar circuits.

    Notes: Abstract  The akinesia of Parkinsonism is relieved by pallidotomy and subthalamic nucleotomy, but not by thalamotomy. Therefore, this disabling symptom probably depends upon connections other than the pallidal-thalamocortical tracts, possibly efferents of the medial pallidum descending to the upper brainstem. We have previously demonstrated akinesia in the normal monkey following radiofrequency lesioning in the region of the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), one of the primary targets for descending pallidal outflow. Here, we confirm that selectively destroying neurones in the PPN area, whilst sparing fibres of passage, results in an akinetic state in normal macaques.

    Notes: Abstract Prompt lepton production in proton beam dump experiments has been critically analysed within the general frame work of $$A_c \bar D$$ and $$D\bar D$$ production and their subsequent semileptonic decays. Realistic decay modes based on recent experiments are used. We have investigated the effect of using differentx dependences for the charm particles obtained either from simple quark counting rules or as inferred from strange particle production data. The $$D\bar D$$ production is assumed to have a linearA dependence and for the $$A_c \bar D$$ process bothA 1 andA 2/3 dependence is used. We show that by a simultaneous fit to the energy and angular distributions of prompt leptons in all the experiments the ratio of $$A_c \bar D$$ to $$D\bar D$$ production cross section can be determined. A comparison of this fit with these experimental distributions indicates that thex dependences based on strange particle data are strongly favoured. AnA 2/3 dependence for $$A_c \bar D$$ production, which corresponds to a quasi-diffractive process, is favoured although within existing errorsA 1 dependence cannot be ruled out. Putting together the cross section results from our analysis with other results at similar energies (p 1ab ∼400GeV/c) the production cross sections ( $$A_c \bar D$$ ) and ( $$D\bar D$$ ) are estimated to be ∼25 and ∼20 μb/nucleon respectively leading to a total inclusive charm cross section of ∼90 μb/nucleon.
