Notes: RNA fingerprinting using an arbitrary primed polymerase chain reaction was carried out to compare differences in expression of mRNAs between axotomized and normal hypoglossal motoneurons in the mouse. In this survey, the kinesin light chain (KLC) was identified as a nerve injury-associated molecule. This was also confirmed by in situ hybridization using hemihypoglossal nerve-transected brain sections. In order to identify the exact species of molecules belonging to the KLC family, in situ hybridization was carried out with oligonucleotide probes specific to rat KLC A, KLC B and KLC C, using the rat hypoglossal nerve injury model. In addition, expression of both ubiquitous and neuron-specific kinesin heavy chain and cytoplasmic dynein which is a retrograde motor, was also examined. Expression of all the members of the KLC (A-C) family and dynein was up-regulated during nerve regeneration, whereas the abundant expression of the neuron-specific KHC mRNA was not changed. The present results indicate that the molecules associated with both anterograde and retrograde axonal transport are up-regulated in their expression during efferent motor nerve regeneration, suggesting that the retrograde transport of growth factors and anterograde transport of vesicles, providing membrane material, could be increased during motor nerve regeneration.

Notes: Abstract The short range behaviour of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential is studied in terms of the quark model, where nucleons are assumed to consist of three colored quarks. By considering the overlap kernel of the wave function of the resonating group method (RGM), it is found that the Pauli effect does not produce a ‘hard core’. Instead, the gluon exchange interaction with the confinement requirement suggests a rather soft one. TheΔ-Δ isobar interaction is also considered. In the (S, T) = (3, 3), (3, 2) and (2, 3) channels we find a ‘hard core’, while calculations in some other cases indicate even strong short range attractions.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of collectivity at high momentum transfer in unnatural parity states in finite nuclei, is outlined. This phenomenon is produced by the strong tensor force in the one pion exchange interaction operating coherently in a large oscillator space. The collectivity is observed at momentaq∼(2-3)m π corresponding to the critical momentum of pion condensation. If existent, such collective behaviour is expected to be seen in differential cross sections, e.g. for proton inelastic scattering, leading to unnatural parity states.

Notes: Abstract Recent investigations of stretchedM 6 transitions in thes-d shell have uncovered the unexpected systematic trend that isoscalarM 6 transitions are two to three times more retarded than the isovector ones. We present the result of a microscopic calculation analyzing the different mechanisms usually invoked in the formation of the quenching and suggest that an additional argument based on the difference in structure between isoscalar and isovector transition densities may be playing a predominant role in explaining the data.
