Notes: A detailed re-investigation of the (0,0) and 211 bands of the A˜ 2Πu–X˜ 2Πg transition of 11BO2, near 545 nm, has been carried out from spectra taken at sub-Doppler resolution. Avoided crossings are found to occur between the 2Σ and 2Δ vibronic components of the v2=1 level of the A˜ 2Πu state. These perturbations are the first known examples of K-resonance crossings, which result from an interplay of the electronic Λ-type doubling and the vibrational l-type doubling in a state where the electrostatic parameter ε is small. It turns out that perturbations of this type must always occur in a 2Π electronic state if the ratio A/εω2 is large enough, but have not been seen until now for lack of suitable data. Their existence allows an unusually complete description of the orbital angular momentum effects in both the A˜ 2Πu and X˜ 2Πg states. It has been necessary to fit the avoided crossings by a full matrix treatment of the K resonance. In addition the A˜ 2Πu state, although it appears to be unperturbed at lower resolution, shows an astonishing number of very small random rotational perturbations. These arise from vibronic coupling between the A˜ 2Πu and X˜ 2Πg states of BO2 through the ν3 vibration, which has species σ+u; their presence is consistent with the explanation given by Kawaguchi et al. [Mol. Phys. 44, 509 (1981)] for the sizable negative anharmonicity of the ground state ν3 vibration. About 20% of the available ground state energy levels at 18 300 cm−1 appear to be active in causing level shifts and splittings in the A˜ 2Πu state. The matrix elements are quite small, ranging up to about 600 MHz, but the great number of perturbations indicates the onset of chaotic behavior.

Notes: Abstract Late Archaean orthogneisses and aluminous and iron-rich metasedimentary rocks intruded by anorthosite and a ferrodiorite-granite suite were completely recrystallized during Proterozoic granulite facies metamorphism. Geobarometry and geothermometry indicate P-T conditions of around 7.5kbar. 700°C, with a CO2-rich fluid phase and logfO2 at or below -16. A two-stage high-grade history of near isochemical corona growth is preserved in metasediments with the reaction cycle opx + plag + H2O → hbl+gar+SiO2→ opx+plag+H2O. End product compositions resemble those of the initial phases, and the only mobile components were SiO2 and/or H2O. The coronas reflect shortlived fluctuations in chemical activity at essentially constant P and T, contrary to simple progressive change in equilibrium parameters recorded by most corona-bearing textures.

Notes: Abstract: The expression of the 70-kDa heat shock cognate (HSC70) and stress-inducible (HSP70) proteins, and their mRNAs, was examined in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, a model of inflammatory demyelination in the CNS. This study was undertaken as an extension of previous work demonstrating an abrupt decline in mRNA levels of both glial fibrillary acidic protein and the low-molecular-weight neurofilament subunit in experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis spinal cord at 12 days after inoculation, the height of inflammation and clinical signs. Using the same total RNA preparations as our previous study, we report here that mRNA levels for HSC70 increased approximately sixfold over control values at the same time that glial fibrillary acidic protein and low-molecular-weight neurofilament subunit messages decreased and were similar to controls by 21 days after inoculation. In situ hybridization experiments showed that HSC70 mRNA was predominantly expressed in neurons and that the influx of inflammatory cells into the CNS was not responsible for the large increase in HSC70 message. Despite this elevation in mRNA, only small (if any) increases in protein levels for HSC70 were detected by both western blotting and in vitro cell-free translation systems. However, by quantitative immunoblotting, we determined that constitutive levels of HSC70 comprised a substantial portion of CNS proteins, representing 2–3% of the total protein content of spinal cord. Immunohistochemical staining illustrated that the distribution of HSC70 was consistent with that of its message. In contrast, no HSP70 mRNA or protein was detected in either control or experimental animals.

Notes: Summary. Cardiac electromechanical intervals were measured during labour in 103 unselected human fetuses. Mean values (±SD) for the three intervals measured were 76.01±9.93 ms for the pre-ejection period, 41.56±8.51 ms for the isovolumetric contraction time and 156.23±16.58 ms for the left ventricular ejection time. These are consistent with previously reported data from our own and other centres. The intervals studied did not alter significantly as labour proceeded or during uterine contractions. There was no consistent correlation between them and fetal scalp blood P o2,P co2 or pH, although the pre-ejection period was shortened considerably in three very acidaemic or hypoxic fetuses, and it was prolonged in association with tight nuchal cord entanglement and variable decelerations in fetal heart rate. These findings raise the possibility of using recorded cardiac electromechanical intervals to determine the clinical significance of different fetal heart-rate patterns that suggest the possibility of fetal distress.

Notes: Summary. Five infertile women, with normal menstrual rhythm who had been investigated previously by daily hormone analyses throughout at least one complete menstrual cycle and had shown poor luteal-phase steroid-hormone profiles were treated by a new approach. They were rendered hypogonadotrophic with large doses of a luteinizing hormone releasing-hormone analogue (Hoe 766) and were then treated with exogenous gonadotrophins to induce follicular growth and ovulation. Progesterone production after ovulation in all cases was superior to that observed in the individual patients’ without treatment. One patient conceived in her first conception cycle and another in her fourth. This regimen offers a systematic approach to the treatment of unexplained infertility in women with deficient luteal-phase steroid-hormone profiles.

Notes: Efforts have been made to determine whether surface antigens could be used as biochemical markers to define strain differences in the parasitic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis. In previous studies, a wild-type isolate designated G1 was found to have surface proteins analogous to the immobilization antigens of Paramecium and Tetrahymena; rabbit antiserum against this strain immobilizes homologous cells in vitro. It has now been shown for two additional Ichthyophthirius isolates (designated G1.1 and G2) that immobilization antigens are both present and serologically distinct. Proteins of similar size, which cross-react in Western blots with rabbit antisera against immobilization antigens of the G1 strain, are nevertheless found in the G1.1 and G2 isolates. As shown by Southern blotting analysis, the G1.1 and G2 strains also contain genomic DNA sequences which hybridize with an immobilization antigen cDNA from G1 when probed under conditions of reduced stringency. The serotypic differences in immobilization between I. multifiliis isolates appear to be stable over time and provide a means of discriminating strains. In addition to providing a basis for comparative studies, the work described here has implications for the development of vaccines against this important fish parasite.

Notes: A statistical treatment of MT data from the Pannonian Basin, Hungary, based on the distortion theory of the S-effect suggests that the local increase in crustal conductivity is connected with deep fractures.Field model measurements have recently been carried out in a shallow, quasi two-dimensional basin of well known tectonics using MT station distances of 1–3 km. The results of the investigation and numerical modelling of near surface distortions, support the idea that deep fractures (faults) contain the conducting formations. According to 2-D model computations, several conducting dykes at considerable depths can cause anomalies which are indiscernible from an anomaly due to a conducting layer. The significance of these results is discussed from the point of view of geothermal energy exploitation.

Notes: A method for calibrating high-resolution laser spectra in the visible is described. The system is based on an evacuated Fabry–Perot étalon whose cavity length is servolocked to a stabilized HeNe laser; the absolute order number of the fringe at the HeNe frequency is known and the free spectral range can be determined with high accuracy. For absolute-frequency measurements the order number of a transmission fringe is obtained from a commercial wavemeter (whose accuracy is sufficient to identify the fringe); the absolute frequency is then the HeNe frequency multiplied by the ratio of the "unknown'' order number to the "lock-point'' order number. The long-term frequency reproducibility of the system is better than 25 MHz. Small-frequency splittings such as molecular hyperfine intervals can be measured to ±1 MHz, while large-frequency intervals (of the order of 500 GHz) are consistent to better than 10 MHz.
