    Notes: In an earlier issue of Decision Sciences, Jesse, Mitra, and Cox [1] examined the impact of inflationary conditions on the economic order quantity (EOQ) formula. Specifically, the authors analyzed the effect of inflation on order quantity decisions by means of a model that takes into account both inflationary trends and time discounting (over an infinite time horizon). In their analysis, the authors utilized two models: Current-dollars model and Constant-dollars model. These models were derived, of course, by setting up a total cost equation in the usual manner then finding the optimum order quantity that minimizes the total cost. Jesse, Mitra, and Cox [1] found that EOQ is approximately the same under both conditions; with or without inflation. However, we disagree with the conclusion drawn by [2] and show that EOQ will be different under inflationary conditions, provided that the inflationary conditions are properly accounted for in the formulation of the total cost model.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements are reported for correlated energies and angles of heavy fragments from reactions of 343 MeV40Ar with197Au. The results show a continuous evolution of the mass distributions from fission-like products at angle pairs of ≈60 and 300 degrees to deeply inelastic projectile-like products at ≈45° and 300°. Certain difficulties are emphasized for the use of the “symmetric fragmentation” cross sections in the context of current theoretical models (e.g. the “extra push” theory). The fission-like reactions have been studied in some detail and the results have been compared to a Monte Carlo kinematic simulation. To account for the experimental results forward-peaked light particle emission (n, H, He) must occur in a large fraction of the fission-like reactions.

    Notes: Abstract From measured cross sections for evaporative1H and4He, we have unfolded the separate effects of excitation energy (E) and spin (J) on the decay of194Hg. The analysis depends only on Bohr's independence hypothesis and on certain general features of the transmission coefficients for fusion. Evaporation-like emission of1H and4He increases rapidly with energy but decreases rather mildly with initial spin. Significant emission occurs even for very high spins where the calculated fission barrier is essentially zero. The equilibrium model for fission-evaporation competition is brought into question forE*≳98 MeV and J≳65 ħ.

    Notes: Abstract Angular and energy correlations have been measured for coincident fission-fragment pairs from the reaction of197Au with 8.6 MeV/u20Ne. These data have been analyzed to test for fission after incomplete fusion and its admixture with fission generally attributed to the relatively pure compound-nucleus mechanism. A Monte Carlo kinematic simulation program has been written to provide a basis for detailed comparisons of the experimental data to the calculations that employ various mechanistic assumptions. We conclude that incomplete fusion is indeed a prominent precursor to fission even for incident energies of less than 10 MeV/u. Similar data from earlier studies have been reanalyzed and shown to be consistent with this conclusion.

    Notes: Abstract Angular distributions of products from the reaction of 5.90 Mev/u132Xe ions with a natural Fe target have been determined radiochemically, using catcher-foil techniques. Partially-damped products with charge near that of the projectile exhibit distributions which clearly evolve from quasielastic yields focussed near the grazing angle to deep-inelastic products orbiting towards forward angles.

    Notes: Abstract We report here a theoretical calculation of band strucure and superconductivity in the fcc phase of lanthanum under pressure. The effect of pressure on the band structure is obtained by means of the linear muffintin orbital method. McMillan's formula is used to calculate the superconducting transition temperature (T c). It is found that the value ofT c increases continuously up to 17.8 GPa and then begins to decrease. The change in the slope ofT c is attributed to the appearance of a new piece of Fermi surface. The calculated values ofT c are compared with the available experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract We report a calculation of the band structure and superconductivity of silicon in the hexagonal close-packed phase under pressure. The effect of pressure on the band structure is obtained by means of the linear muffin-tin orbital method. The superconducting transition temperatureT c is calculated using the formulas of Allen and Dynes1 as well as those of McMillan2. It is found that the value ofT c increases with pressure up to 74.3 GPa. The increase inT c is attributed to the continuous s → d electron transfer under pressure. The calculated values ofT c are compared with the available experimental data. Further, Heine's fifth power law3 has been tested from thed-band widths obtained from the band-structure results.

    Notes: Many varied articles for the health care industry are produced by extrusion and injection molding processes using poly(vinyl-chloride). Until recently, a mixture of 12% ethylene oxide/88% dichlorodifluormethane (Freon 12) was used to sterilize PVC based components and sets by chemical fumigation. In 1978 EPA reported ethylene oxide to be carcinogenic and mutagenic and established a 50 ppm exposure which was later lowered to 1 ppm. Likewise, Freon 12 came under regulation and is currently being taxed. These developments resulted in an industry need to be furnished with a viable replacement for ethylene oxide sterilization. Gamma irradiation was selected for this purpose as an economical and effective method. This study shows that a rigid PVC compound can be commercially produced that satisfies the critical balance of properties required for the medical device market and also can be sterilized by gamma irradiation without adversely affecting critical properties.
