Notes: We have performed photoluminescence, photoexcitation, and transmission electron microscopy measurements on boron nitride films grown by chemical vapor deposition and later reacted with potassium. After reaction, the potassium atoms were found to intercalate the BN host and to form a (2×2)R0° in-plane structure which is commensurate with the pristine BN lattice. Optical transitions with ∼2.7 eV onsets were found to occur within the ∼5-eV BN band gap and have been interpreted as Γ-point transitions between the K(4s) band and the BN(2p) bands. The absence of an appreciable shift in the E2g2 phonon frequency of the pristine and reacted films suggests that the charge transfer between the K and BN bands is very small.

Notes: Controlling vertical Bloch line (VBL) position and stripe domain chopping in multiple stripe domains, aligned in parallel by a period of 12 μm, are studied experimentally using a 5-μm bubble garnet film. Patterned high coercive-force CoPt films aligned in parallel are used for stabilizing the stripe domain. During the stripe stretching process, the VBL motion at the stripe head was controlled by the dc conductor current to get two different wall states: one with a VBL at the stripe head and the other without VBL. Stripe chopping experiments for VBL detection have been performed using hairpin and meandering conductors. We found that the meandering conductor presents excellent characteristics; the bias field margin and the chopping pulse amplitude margin are 58 Oe±6% and 133 mA±11%, respectively, for one stripe. VBL generation by the meandering conductor has also been studied using the same sample.

Notes: The temporal behavior of excited state (3P2, 3P1) of Kr atoms in a discharge-pumped KrCl excimer laser has been studied using the hook method and the sidelight method with nanosecond time resolution. On the basis of these experimental results, the mechanism of the formation of KrCl* excimer is also discussed.

Notes: The radicals formed by the reaction of GeH4 with H in the Xe matrix were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy at very low temperatures. The radicals observed were identified as GeH3 and GeH5. The newly observed radical GeH5 is considered as the intermediate of the reaction H+GeH4→H2+GeH3. The ESR parameters of these radicals were determined by numerical deconvolution of the observed spectra.

Notes: The radicals formed by the reaction of SiH4 with H produced by the photolysis of HI in the matrices of Xe and Kr were investigated by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy at the temperatures between 4.2 and 100 K. The radicals observed were identified as SiH3 and SiH5. The newly observed radical SiH5 is considered as the intermediate of the reaction SiH4+H→SiH3+H2. The radical had two conformers; both were observed in a Xe matrix, while only one was observed in a Kr matrix. The ESR parameters of these radicals were determined by numerical deconvolution of the observed spectra. The hyperfine coupling of 29Si in silyl radicals isolated in Kr was determined accurately by the present method of the radical formation. The value obtained was 189.5 G instead of 266 G previously reported.

Notes: Xenon enriched with nonmagnetic isotopes, in which the content of magnetic isotopes is less than 0.4%, has been used as the low temperature matrix for the observation of electronic spin resonance (ESR) spectra of SiH3 radicals and H atoms. The SiH3 radicals were generated by the reaction of SiH4 with H atoms produced by the photolysis of HI. Well resolved proton hyperfine structures, which were smeared out into a broad singlet spectrum when natural xenon was used as the matrix, were observed. The ESR parameters were determined by numerical deconvolution and compared with those obtained for the radicals trapped in other matrices. Simple doublet spectrum of H atoms without superhyperfine structures was also observed after the photolysis of HI at 4.2 K.

Notes: The characterization of coherent states as the quantum states that split into two uncorrelated beams is considered. The characterization leads to the study of coherent states at finite temperature—thermal coherent states (TCS's). These TCS's are defined within the formalism of thermo field dynamics (TFD). TFD allows a generalization of the uncertainty relation that accounts for both thermal and quantum fluctuations. The TCS is shown to be a minimal state for the generalized uncertainty relation.

Notes: We have investigated theoretically and experimentally the energy levels and allowed optical transitions with energies ΔE of a quasi-zero-dimensional (Q0D) electron gas in a magnetic field B. Using a two-dimensional harmonic confining potential with oscillator frequency ω0, the theory predicts two values for ΔE. The resonance position in the magnetotransmission spectra from the Q0D system realized on a grid-gate GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure, depends strongly on the 2D confining potential induced by the gate voltage Vg and, when Vg=−0.5 and −1.5 V, agrees with ΔE calculated with (h-dash-bar)ω0=1.5 and 2.8 meV, respectively.

Notes: Two cases of clear cell acanthoma are reported. The expression of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), involucrin and keratin proteins in the tumors was investigated immunohistochemically. In 1981, Penneys et al. reported that this tumor was not of sweat gland origin because of the absence of CEA. This study confirmed this, furthor, the pattern of positive reaction of involucrin also indicated that this tumor is not of swcat duct origin.

Notes: . The Taiwanese strain of Leucocytozoon caulleryi was isolated from an infected chicken in Taipei, Taiwan, and established in chickens and biting midges Culicoides arakawae from Japan. Sporogony of the strain in C. arakawae was completed on day 3 after the infective blood meals at 25°C. Sporozoites isolated from the salivary glands of C. arakawae on days 3 or 4 after feeding caused infection in all the chickens inoculated. The strain showed high pathogenicity for chickens. Mortality of chickens rose with an increase in the number of sporozoites inoculated. The prepatent period for chickens inoculated with sporozoites was 14 days. Parasites appeared in the peripheral blood of chickens on day 15 and disappeared on day 26 after sporozoite inoculation. Soluble antigens were found in the sera of chickens infected with the strain between 10 and 17 days after inoculation, and homologous antibodies appeared after 17 days. Antigens prepared from sera, schizonts, merozoites, and gametocytes of the Taiwanese strain reacted with the sera of chickens infected witt the same strain or the strain isolated in Japan. The chickens that recovered from a primary infection with the Taiwanese strain demonstrated complete resistance to reinfection with the same strain or the strain isolated in Japan.
