Notes: [Auszug] The experiments were performed on myotomal muscles of Xenopus laevis embryos and tadpoles. Procedures of dissection and staging have been described previously7. The muscle cells extend the length of a myotome and insert at myocommata where the neuromuscular junctions are located. Focal synaptic ...

Notes: Abstract Some physiological and behavioural responses were observed in German Brown, Holstein-Friesian and White Fulani heifers during four different quarters of the year in an attempt to assess their adaptability to the seasonal equatorial climate of Southern Nigeria. Rectal temperatures under shade conditions showed slight but significant (P〈0.05) fluctuations. Holstein heifers experienced hyperthermia and panted in the sun, unlike the Brown and Fulani cattle. Breathing rate showed a highly significant (P〈0.01) seasonal variation. The heifers were generally most comfortable during the wettest periods of the year. The Holstein and Fulani showed the highest and lowest responses respectively. The Fulani did not seek shade; the Holstein sought shade more frequently than the Brown heifers. The Brown are more adaptable than the Holstein to the hot humid environment in which the Fulani cattle are relatively comfortable.

Notes: [Auszug] The mean single-channel conductance, and mean lifetime of the open state, have been estimated at the voltage-clamped end-plate of the frog (summer Rana pipiens) cutaneus pectoris muscle. Methods similar to those of Anderson and Stevens5, were used with the addition of Normarski interference ...

Notes: Summary Studies aimed at defining the growth pattern and the mature body weight of Nigerian Dwarf sheep were conducted using 18 ewe lambs and 13 ram lambs fedad lib. on roughages and concentrates from weaning to maturity. Computer generated quadratic growth curves showed that the mature body weight of ewes is about 33 kg attained between 30 and 36 months of age while that of rams is about 42 kg attained between 27 and 30 months of age. Body measurements at maturity were also determined.

Description / Table of Contents: Temperature Dependence Investigations of 31P Chemical Shifts of Trialkoxyphosphazene N-phosphoryldialkylestersThe 31P NMR spectra of a series of trialkoxyphosphazene-N-phosphoryldialkylesters, (RO)3P=N—P(O)(OR′)2, where R = R′ = Et; R = Et, R′ = Bu; R = Bu, R′ = Et; R = R′ = Bu; and R = R = R′ = Hex respectively, and of trichlorophosphazene-N-phosphoryldichloride were investigated at various temperatures. The temperature dependence of chemical shift of phosphorus belonging to the phosphazene group is multiplicately larger than that of phosphorus belonging to the phosphoryl group. This fact also could be confirmed for other simple phosphazene and phosphoryl compounds. As discussed this different temperature dependence of 31P chemical shift is not a consequence of the medium but of the molecular structure.

Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of N-Di(alk-, ar-)oxyphosphoryl-tri(alk-, ar-)oxyphosphazenes, (RO)2P(O)—N=P(OR)3, by P—N-Bond FormationThe title compounds can be prepared from di- and triesters of phosphorous acid, sodium azide, and carbon tetrachloride in a single step procedure and in high yields. Due to the combination of the Atherton-Todd and the Staudinger reaction toxic phosphoric acid ester azides are formed only in situ and their concentration is kept very small. As by-products trichloromethane phosphonic acid esters, (RO)2P(O)CCl3, esters of phosphoric acid and condensed phosphoric acids as well as N-alkylimidodiphosphoric acid esters, [(RO)2P(O)]2NR, are formed. Their formation can be avoided or reduced by choosing suitable reaction conditions. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed.
