    Notizen: Brachial palsy is caused by traction injury to the brachial plexus during delivery. The present study demonstrates the very high incidence in breech deliveries if the Mauriceau-Smellie-Veit manoeuvre is used. This method should be abandoned in favour of forceps delivery for the aftercoming head.

    Notizen: Reports on eases of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (erythema multiforme major) have seldom related it to occupational exposure to chemicals. Serious liver involvement is also uncommon. This report describes 5 cases of the syndrome who had been occupationally exposed to trichloroethylene. The circumstantial evidence suggested that the chemical might have been it causative factor in the disease. The liver was involved in all and in 3 it was serious, with one death. The degree of exposure to trichloroethylene varied. The duration of exposure ranged from 2 to 5 weeks. It seemed likely that there was a hypersensitive reaction to trichloroethylene in these cases.

    Notizen: Summary Male Wistar rats were pretreated with 3 ml triolein orally for 4 days in addition to their normal diet. A similar control group were allowed free access to normal laboratory food. When given an oral fat load (1 ml triolein) plasma gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) and triglyceride levels were significantly higher in the fat pretreated group. Inhibition of fat-stimulated GIP release by exogenous insulin was demonstrated in the untreated control group (plasma GIP: 663±49 versus 853±92 ng/l, mean ± SEM p 〈 0.025), but pretreatment with an oral fat load abolished this effect (plasma GIP: 1008±95 versus 1116±100 ng/l, p NS). Plasma glucose levels were significantly higher in fat pretreated rats given oral fat and intraperitoneal insulin compared with untreated controls (plasma glucose nadir 2.6±0.48 versus 1.6±0.15 mmol/l, p 〈 0.05). Fat-pretreated rats showed significantly higher insulin and glucose levels compared with the untreated rats when given oral glucose (plasma insulin: 6.2±1.2 versus 2.5±0.59 n.g/l, p 〈 0.01; plasma glucose: 10.2±0.39 versus 8.9±0.41 mmol/l, p 〈 0.025). Pretreatment of rats on a high fat diet causes (1) increased GIP secretion in response to an oral fat load, (2) abolition of the feed-back inhibition of exogenous insulin on fat-stimulated GIP release, and (3) some degree of insulin resistance.

    Notizen: Summary Batch cultures of Saccharomycopsis lipolytica were grown in minimal medium with olive oil as carbon source. Inocula of glucose-grown cells commenced growth with little lag at rates largely unaffected by variations in the stirring rate or oil concentration. However, growth rates declined when the medium pH was below 7.0. In all cultures, media pH declined with increasing cell concentration. Cell composition during exponential growth was 42% protein and 2% fat. Carbon-limited cells maintained this composition after oil exhaustion but during nitrogen- and oxygen-limited growth, protein content decreased and fat content increased although the protein decrease was only transient with oxygen limitation. Yield coefficients for triglyceride were near unity for all cultures. Free acid concentrations rose rapidly after inoculation. As fermentations progressed, free glycerol appeared and concentrations of di- and monoglycerides passed through maximal values although peak concentrations of di- and monoglycerides persisted for extended times in oxygen- and nitrogen-limited cultures respectively. The fraction of free glycerol consumed was greater in oxygen-limited than in carbon- or nitrogen-limited culture. The basic requirements for growth of yeasts on fatty wastes are discussed with reference to these observations.

    Notizen: Abstract The motion of electrons in a crystal subjected to a linear electric field is studied by means of the molecular orbital method. The field perturbation of the resonance integrals, as well as the Coulomb ones, results in the Schroedinger equation being expressed as a hypergeometric difference equation, whose solution gives rise to the well-known Stark-ladder picture of the tilted energy band. It is found that the part played by the resonance integral perturbation is just as important as that of the Coulomb integral perturbation and, therefore, cannot be neglected as in earlier investigations.
