Notes: Abstract Specimens of the thiobiotic acoel Solenofilomorpha funilis Crezée, 1975 and the oxybiotic acoel Otocelis sp. were collected from Mount Desert Island, Maine, USA in spring and summer of 1982, and the ultrastructure and distribution of their mitochondria were compared. The volume density and the surface density of the mitochondria are significantly higher in the epidermis and parenchyma of S. funilis than in the corresponding tissues of Otocelis sp. Surface densities of mitochondrial cristae are higher in all tissues studied (epidermis, muscle, and parenchyma) of S. funilis than in Otocelis sp. The differences in mitochondrial ultrastructure of these two species suggest that mitochondria in anaerobic tissues differ in function from their aerobic counterparts.

Notes: Abstract We estimate the accuracy of the conventional ansatz of approximating the lowest order absorptiveP-wave pion-deuteron interactions by pole term amplitudes. By comparing the matrix elements of the approximate pole term and complete absorptive reaction amplitudes for elasticπd scattering we find the pole term approximation to lead to better than 10% accuracy for both theP 11 andP 33 state interactions.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Flüssigkeits-Szintillationszählung zur Bestimmung von14C-markiertem Ametryn in Dünnschichtchromatogrammen wurde eingehend geprüft.
Notes: Summary The use of the liquid scintillation counting method for the determination of14C labelled ametryne on thin-layer chromatograms has been thoroughly investigated. Aging, quenching effect of carrier and adsorbents as well as temperature stability of the compound in the adsorbed state have been studied. The method has a reproducibility of 1 to 2% and a detection limit of 0.005μg per spot at a 3 ∶ 1 signal to background ratio. Fluorescence quenching was used for the location of spots on the chromatogram. Recovery studies were carried out by this method. After 30 minutes development on a chromatoplate coated with silicagel, about 90% of the ametryne was recovered independent of solvent system used. About 75% of the ametryne was recovered from a two-dimensional chromatogram. Recoveries of ametryne from water and soil samples ranged between 78 and 88%.

Notes: Abstract Single crystals of LiF and Al are deformed in shear at a number of constant strain-rates in the range 10−4 to 1600 s−1. These constant rate tests are supplemented by a series of jump tests in which a sharp increment in strain rate is imposed during the quasi-static straining. Dislocation arrangements are observed by etch-pits technique for LiF crystals and by TEM for Al crystals. It is shown that cell sizes vary inversely with flow stress and strain-rate sensitivity.
