Notizen: Abstract The geographic distribution of mercury concentrations in the California mussel Mytilus californianus, collected from 1977–1978 at 43 sites along the western coastline of the continental United States is marked by consistently elevated levels at two locations. These two sites, which are relatively isolated from anthropogenic inputs and mercuryrich minerals, both contain large pinniped and marine bird populations. The relatively elevated mercury levels measured in the excrement of a pinniped from one of those locales indicate that the concentrated discharge of mercuryrich waste products from the marine ecosystem's top carnivores is contaminating lower trophic levels.

Notizen: [Auszug] The Ag concentrations that we measured in profiles off central California (36.5 N, 123 W; May 1981), and off central Mexico (18 N, 108 W; October 1981) agree well with five Pacific Ocean values recently reported by Murozumi3. However, Murozumi's methods were completely different from ours; his ...

Notizen: Summary (1) Participation of the motor cortex in initiating muscle contraction in an isometric tracking task was assessed in cats trained to make accurate force adjustments using forelimb muscles, in response to a vibrissal/visual display stimulus. Behavior in the task was characterized by short reaction times. While the task was performed, recordings of single cortical units were made in zones within area 4γ defined by the effects of microstimulation in forelimb muscles and by receptive fields on the forelimb. (2) Two types of receptive fields with different regional distributions were observed. Cells with simple receptive fields (superficial or deep) were seen throughout the area sampled, consisting of the lateral half of the anterior and posterior sigmoid gyri. Cells whose receptive fields had complex features (directional specificity, temporal lability, multiple foci, etc.) were preferentially located in the cortex rostral to the cruciate sulcus. (3) The area of motor cortex rostral to the cruciate sulcus also differed from the area caudal to the cruciate sulcus in the timing of task-related activity. Neurons that were active before response onset (lead cells), and could therefore contribute to response initiation, were preferentially located in the rostral cortex, and, in general, had complex receptive fields. (4) Lead cells were active at a constant latency from the stimulus, rather than being timed to response onset. However, the modulation of their activity was related to both the direction and magnitude of the force response. (5) These results suggest that the pericruciate motor cortex of the cat contains two functional subdivisions: a caudal one concerned with ongoing movement, perhaps under the control of specific sensory inputs from the responding limb, and a rostral one involved in initiating movement. Because behaviorally relevant stimuli can rapidly activate a specialized population of cells in the rostral cortex, this area is able to participate in responses with short reaction times.

Notizen: Summary Electromyographic (EMG) activity associated with rapid voluntary limb movements exhibits a characteristic “three burst pattern”. The first burst is in the agonist muscle (AG1), the second is in the antagonist (ANT) and the third is again in the agonist (AG2). The present study was undertaken to determine whether ANT and AG2 reflect preprogrammed commands or responses to stretch consequent upon limb displacement. To answer this question EMG activity of agonist and antagonist muscles was examined in cats performing a tracking task. To dissociate centrally programmed muscular events from their intended mechanical consequences, isometric and anisometric conditions were presented in either a predictable or unpredictable sequence. A torque motor was used to control limb trajectory and to impose passive angular displacements. Whereas AG1 was present under both isometric and anisometric conditions, ANT and AG2 required limb displacement and were time locked to movement parameters. ANT occurred within 15 ms following the onset of acceleration. Its magnitude varied linearly with this parameter and inversely with AG1. Passive displacements stretching the antagonist elicited responses with similar latencies and greatest magnitude for a given acceleration. AG2 was only present in underdamped movements with terminal oscillations and typically occurred when the position reached its peak and the velocity recrossed zero. Its magnitude was a function of both limb deceleration and of intended force. The data indicate that both ANT and AG2 represent responses to muscles stretch whose amplitudes are modulated by descending commands. Reciprocal mechanisms operating at a spinal level could account for the reduction of the antagonist response as a function of intended force. The increased sensitivity of late stretch responses in the agonist with higher intended forces is compatible with motoneuron facilitation by tonic descending commands. It is proposed that the stretch evoked responses function to dampen terminal oscillations which ensue from rapid displacement of the mass of the limb against elastic forces of muscle and soft tissue.
