    Notes: The forward scattering of cold neutrons in small-angle scattering experiments on macromolecules dissolved in mixtures of light and heavy water is predominantly determined by the large incoherent cross section of the hydrogen atoms leading to an isotropic background level. The probability per unit solid angle for forward scattering by samples rich in H2O is approximately equal to the fraction of the primary beam which has not been transmitted through the sample, divided by the full solid angle 4π. When using the camera D11 at the high flux reactor in Grenoble [Ibel (1976). J. Appl. Cryst. 9, 296–309] this simple relation is fulfilled within ±5% by a 1 mm thick sample of H2O at 281.8 K using neutrons of 1.0 nm wavelength. In D2O, the coherent cross section is of the same order as the incoherent one, and about one half of all those neutrons which had been removed from the primary beam are scattered into large angles. Our experimental results and the derived graphs allow us to determine the effective forward scattering per unit solid angle for any volume fraction of D2O in H2O/D2O mixtures around room temperature by a simple and accurate transmission experiment in conjunction with the measurement of the scattering of one single sample of H2O of 1 mm thickness, for neutrons of wavelengths from 0.45 to 1.0 nm.

    Notes: The present study presents the first small-angle neutron scattering experiment of lipid bilayers in excess water. The method of solvent contrast variation was applied. The variation of scattering intensity with the scattering angle could be analysed in terms of the Kratky–Porod model of scattering by quasi-two-dimensional systems. From this the bilayer thickness of unilamellar vesicles of dimyristoyllecithin was determined to be d = 41 ± 1 Å at 310 K. Several typical mixtures of different lecithins with varying chain lengths and of lecithin with phosphatidic acid were studied. By deuteration of one lipid component a very large contrast between segregated phases could be achieved. It was thus possible to distinguish clearly between homogeneous mixtures and mixtures which exhibit a heterogeneous lipid organization. In the latter case no intensity matching upon solvent contrast variation was possible. It is shown that phase boundaries may be determined very accurately by performing contrast variation experiments with at most two mixtures of different initial composition. The main advantage of the present method is that lateral phase separation may also be clearly studied in fluid states of the bilayer. From the average scattering-length densities one can determine the density of the lipid layers and thus the excess volumes of the mixtures. For lecithin mixtures positive excess volumes are observed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 43 Kranke mit Hirntumoren unterschiedlicher Lokalisation und Art wurden mit dem Aachener Aphasie Test untersucht. Bei den meisten Personen wurde zur gleichen Zeit der Handlungsintelligenzquotient mit Hilfe des Hamburg-Wechsler-Intelligenz-Testes ermittelt. Die Untersuchung hat folgendes ergeben: 1. Sprachstörungen bei Hirntumorkranken sind in der Regel amnestische Aphasien, unabhängig vom prä- oder postsylvischen Sitz der Geschwülste. 2. Personen mit Aphasie haben keine größere Intelligenzstörung als nicht aphasische mit gleicher Hirnschädigung. 3. Die Schwere der Aphasie korreliert nicht mit dem Handlungsintelligenzquotienten. 4. Bei rechtshirnigen Geschwulstträgern korrelieren die Leistungen in dem Untertest Sprachverständnis des Aachener Aphasie Tests mit dem Handlungs-IQ. Dies läßt vermuten, daß dieser Untertest auch visuo-cognitive Fähigkeiten prüft.
    Notes: Summary Patients with primary brain tumours were investigated using the Aachen Aphasia Test and subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). The statistical evaluation of the data from 43 patients indicated that: (1) Aphasia was an amnestic aphasia, independent of the localization of the tumour within the dominant hemisphere; (2) aphasics have no more intellectual impairment than non-aphasics with similar brain lesions; (3) the severity of the aphasic syndrome does not correlate with the WAIS; (4) with right-sided tumours, there was correlation between the speech reception subtest and the WAIS. We conjecture that this subtest tested visuocognitive abilities in patients with right-sided brain lesions.

    Notes: Summary The effect of acute ureteral obstruction (UO) and reduction of renal artery pressure (AC) on the adenosineinduced renal vasoconstriction was studied in the Munich-Wistar rat. Infusion of adenosine, 0.05 μmol/min · kg body weight, into the thoracic aorta, was associated with a fall of directly measured glomerular capillary pressure (P gc) from 45.2+1.8 to 32.5+1.7 mm Hg, P〈0.001. Elevation of ureter pressure to 39+2 mm Hg abolished the fall of P gc following adenosine infusion, 51.3+1.7 vs. 50.0+1.3 mm Hg, NS. Reduction of renal artery pressure to 70 mm Hg by an aortic clamp above the renal arteries also prevented the fall of P gc due to adenosine, 36.8+0.9 vs. 36.4+1.8 mm Hg, NS. Administration of indometacin (10 mg/kg i.v.) restored the ability of adenosine to reduce P gc in UO from 41.5+1.1 to 25.9+2.6 mm Hg (P〈0.001) and in AC from 34.0+3.4 to 28.2+75.7 mm Hg (P〈0.02). Since previous studies have demonstrated that in UO and AC renal prostaglandin synthesis is enhanced the effects of indometacin suggest that prostaglandins could be antagonistic to the action of adenosine on the kidney. The data show that the renal vasculature becomes insensitive to the vasoconstrictive action of adenosine during elevated ureter pressure and reduced renal artery pressure.
