Notes: Summary. Anthropometric measurements were done on 967 singleton live-born Saudi infants of gestational age 33 to 42 weeks who belonged to the high and middle social classes and who were born consecutively in Riyadh University Hospital. The 914 infants born at term (≥37 weeks) had a mean birthweight of 3.31 kg (SD 0.45), a mean length of 49.74 cm (SD 2.5) and a mean head circumference of 34.4 cm (SD 1.4). Values were significantly higher in males than females. Effect of sex in this study was not apparent until 40 weeks and later. Difference in body size was significant between the first-born and second infants but the trend was unimpressive with greater parity. Fifty-three (5.5%) of the infants were born preterm. Twenty-one of the preterm babies and 18 of the term infants weighed 〈2500 g, an overall incidence of low birthweight of 4%. Results were compared with studies from Saudi Arabia and other countries. It is concluded that there was no significant difference between birthweights of upper-class Saudis and Europeans.

Notes: Abstract Sediment cores (16) from the Inner Oslofjord were analyzed for PCB's and DDT. Although localized high content of PCB's is observed, the data show even distribution of these compound — a consequence of removal by particulate and detrital matter and the sedimentation of this material. Significant modification of the profiles of PCB's in the sedimentary column together with fractionation of the PCB's according to their chlorine content are observed. The extent of these changes is shown to be related to the physico-chemical conditions in the sediments and hence the extent of biological mediation.

Notes: Abstract Interdigital comb-shaped electrodes were used to observe thermostimulated depolarization currents flowing on a soda glass surface in ambient gases. The experimental set up, electrode shaping by photograving and measurement procedure are described. Surface thermostimulated depolarization current (STDC) spectra were recorded on glass specimens in dioxide carbon or helium. In both cases, after short gas residence times, depolarization currents were not different from those obtained in vacuum. Different STDC spectra were recorded as the residence time of a glass specimen in CO2 was increased; these spectra also changed with polarization time and polarization temperature. In helium, STDC peaks were observed at −110

Notes: Abstract The method of proton particle-induced X-ray emission (proton PIXE) has been employed to study the trace element composition of human fingernails. The samples were colleted from 51 subjects randomly selected from a working community of about 500 adults and they were analyzed by the thick-target external beam technique of the PIXE method. The samples were exposed to the proton beam as 1-mm thick pellets and irradiated with 2 MeV protons having 20 nA beam intensity. For 40 μC irradiations, the concentration of fourteen elements, K, Ca, Ti, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr and Pb, were measured by comparison with a calibration obtained from the NBS orchard leaf standard (SRM 1571). Some anomalous cases have been revealed from this study and they are attributed to environmental factors. The frequency distributions of the elements are presented and the results compared with available data.

Notes: Abstract Temporal changes in the population densities of four dominant Cladocera (Moina micrura, Diaphanosoma excisum, Alona guttata and Macrothrix spinosa) were studied in untreated and pesticide treated rice plots over a growing season. M. micrura was the first dominant species to occur in all the plots which were initially devoid of vegetation except for the newly transplanted rice seedlings. With the growth of the rice seedlings and the appearance of aquatic macrophytes, open water ricefields were transformed into vegetated littoral conditions precipitating the disappearance of M. micrura and the appearance of the littoral A. guttata and M. spinosa, and the eurytopic D. excisum. The cladoceran community was affected by spraying of the pesticide FMC35001, an analogue of Furadan®. The response of the four dominant species to the pesticide treatment is discussed.
