    Notes: Summary On the basis of thermodynamic analysis of formation of folded-chain and bundle-like nuclei and taking into account the defects in their edge surfaces it was established that the edge surface free energy is the parameter determining to a great extent all the other thermodynamic values and depending not only on the temperature and size of the nucleus but also on the extent of defects in it and on parameter of molecular deformation λ.

    Notes: Summary The steps of order formation during the polypropylene cooling from superheated to supercooled melt were determined by wideangle X-ray scattering. The symmetrical Gaussian halo at the temperatures higher than 280°C is the manifestation of intermolecular short-range order. Below 280°C the additional halo corresponding to the intramolecular short-range order connected with the helix fragments formation appeared. In the supercooled melt just before the beginning of the crystal formation process the diffractogram profile was similar to that of the paracrystalline form consisting of the long distance one-dimensional order domains. The existence of this metastable form with mesomorphous structure was confirmed by NMR and IR data.

    Notes: Conclusions A closed solid electrolyte cell, permitting reliable values of $$\Delta \bar G_{O_2 } $$ to be obtained up to −775 kJ/mole, using a ceramic oxygen pump of stabilized ZrO2, was developed. The temperature dependence of $$\Delta \bar G_{O_2 } $$ of uranium dioxide was determined for O/U=2.0039; 2.0021; 2.0018; 2.0012; 2.0009, and 2.0006. Coulometric titration of uranium dioxide was performed in the range of O/U from 2.0039 to 1.9991, and the influence of the degree of nonstoichiometry on $$\Delta \bar G_{O_2 } $$ was studied at 1273°K. A very strong dependence of $$\Delta \bar G_{O_2 } = f(O/U)$$ at 1273°K was demonstrated in the range of O/U from 2.0001 to 1.9999. A change in O/U by 0.01% causes a 70% decrease in $$\Delta \bar G_{O_2 } $$ .

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Wirkung der Einführung des Methylthiiran (MT) Komonomers in die Hauptkette des Polyakrilonitrils (PAN) auf die thermischen Transformationen der Makromoleküle in einer dünnen DMF-Lösung wurde untersucht. Zu diesem Zwecke wurden statistischen Kopolymere von Akrylonitril und MT synthetisiert, und ihre Pyrolyse in Lösung untersucht. Es wurde festgestellt, dass die Einführung der Thioäthergruppe in die Hauptkette von PAN wesentliche Änderungen in dem thermischen Verhalten des kopolymers im Vergleich mit dem Homopolymer verursacht. Die Ergebnisse der rheologischen, thermischen und spektralen Untersuchungen der Lösungen suggerieren, dass sich die Richtung der thermochemischen Reaktion durch die Einführung der Thioäthergruppe in das PAN-Molekül ändert. In solchen Kopolymeren wird die Reaktion eher durch die -C≡N Gruppen weitergeführt, die konjugierte, zyklische Strukturen formen.
    Abstract: Резюме В работе исследовано влияние сомономера метилтиирана (МТ), введ енного в основную цепь ПАН, на термические превращ ения макромолекул в разба вленных растворах в ДМФ. С этой целью синтезированы статистические сопо лимеры АН с МТ и изучены закономерно сти их пиролиза в раст ворах. Показано, что введени е тиоэфирнрй группы в основную цеп ь ПАН приводит к сущес твенным отличиям в термическ ом поведении таких сопо лимеров по сравнению с гомополимером. На осн овании совместного рассмотрения резуль татов реологическог о термического и спект рального исследован ий растворов, сделано пр едположение об измен ении направления термохи мических реакций при введении в молеку лу ПАН тиоэфирной гру ппы. В этих сополимерах реакции протекают преимущественно по -C≡N-группам с образовани ем сопряженных цикличе ских структур.
    Notes: Abstract The effect of introduction of the comonomer methylthiirane (MT) into the main chain of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) on the thermal transformations of the macromolecules in dilute DMF solution was studied. For this purpose, statistical copolymers of acrylonitrile and MT were synthetized and their pyrolysis in solution was investigated. It was found that introduction of the thioether group into the main chain of PAN results in essential changes in the thermal behaviour of the copolymers as compared to the homopolymer. The results of rheological, thermal and spectral studies on the solutions suggest that the direction of the thermochemical reaction changes on introduction of the thioether group into the PAN molecule. In such copolymers the reaction will preferably proceed by the -C≡N groups forming conjugated cyclic structures.

    Notes: The crystallization of flexible-chain molecules of different degrees of coiling is considered. The nature of the phase transition during crystallization is discussed. The revision of established notions on phase transitions in polymers leads to the concept of crystalline topomorphism, i.e., the existence of two crystalline types with different modes of packing of macromolecules in the macroscopic crystal though they belong to the same lattice class: folded-chain crystal (FCC) and extended-chain crystal (ECC). Phase diagrams in coordinates of degree of coiling vs temperature are plotted. The values of molecular orientation and temperatures at which each of both mechanisms of crystallization takes place are evaluated. The mechanisms of ECC growth under equilibrium conditions and under conditions of molecular orientation are discussed. It is shown that the melting of ECC obtained by the process of orientational crystallization is a second order phase transition, being analogous to a crystal-nematic phase transition. At the same time the melting of FCC provides all the features of a first order transition.
