Notes: [Auszug] Much previous work on the fracture of cement has been concerned with compressive failure and with attempts to relate total volume porosity and compressive strength. From such studies, empirical laws such as those of Feret, Abrams and Powers have been derived6-9. However, the mode of failure in ...

Notes: [Auszug] BIRCHALL ET AL. REPLY- Bailey, Higgins and Chatterji have raised interesting questions, some perhaps prompted by the lack of detail in our short paper1. We are aware of the detailed arguments relating to the fracture behaviour of cement paste and of the careful work by Bailey and Higgins on this. ...

Notes: Abstract A new high strength cement, developed with minimal internal flaws, has been investigated for use in surgery and dentistry. Preliminary results on the biocompatibility of this Macro-Defect-Free cement are given in this paper. The evidence suggests that the cement reacts slightly with the tissue environment, yielding some particulate debris. This increases the cellular activity and extends the period of the cellular inflammatory response following implantation.

Notes: Abstract The internal shell of the cuttlefish, which acts as a rigid buoyancy tank, is structured to combine high compressive strength — since it must withstand the external hydrostatic pressure — with minimum weighT. The micro-architecture of cuttlebone has been examined by electron microscopy and the relevance of the structure to the mechanical duties required of the shellin vivo are briefly discussed. The inorganic calcareous structure is associated with an organic component which may act as a template for mineralization.
