    Notes: Nine children suffering from Landau-Kleffner syndrome and 25 children with developmental expressive disorder were tested for comprehension of the grammatical structure of English in spoken, written and signed (Paget-Gorman) language modalities. It is shown that the comprehension problems of children with Landau-Kleffner syndrome are not restricted to spoken language, but are also found when written or signed language is used. Further, in all three language modalities these children show deviant patterns of comprehension consistent with the notion that they treat language as having a sequential rather than a hierarchical structure. However, similar patterns of performance are found in profoundly deaf children, indicating that peripheral auditory deprivation is a sufficient condition for these deviant patterns of comprehension to develop.

    Notes: Seventy-nine profoundly deaf 8 to 12-year-olds were tested for comprehension of spoken, written and signed (Paget-Gorman Sign System, PGSS) English grammatical contrasts. Understanding of spoken language was below the 4-year-old level, with few deaf children understanding enough vocabulary to attempt the test. On written and signed forms, many children responded to content words with little understanding of grammar. Others would interpret word order sequentially, producing characteristic errors. PGSS can provide a viable communication channel and does not hinder oral or written language acquisition, but it does not overcome the grammatical problems of deaf children.

    Notes: The traditional application of graphics combined with recent advances in computer technology can conveniently provide three dimensional (3-D) plots of raw and/or mathematically derived data. Researchers can present more data in a particular format or increase the quantity of data that publishers will accept due to space limitations. 3-D plots provide a clear visual reference to mathematical models or statistical interpretations of data sets. Results can be made more meaningful and easier to understand than results presented by conventional 2-D graphics. The particular application of 3-D graphics to problems in food science and technology is discussed.

    Notes: Summary Five different isolates of influenza C virus which were isolated over a period of 32 years and from four different continents were compared by RNA genome oligonucleotide fingerprinting analyses. The earliest isolate of influenza C virus was reported in 1949 byTaylor (19) and served as a reference strain for this study. The results obtained using this technique of comparing relatedness between viruses clearly showed that all strains are distinct. However, the similarities in the pattern of the oligonucleotide fingerprints are marked for the more recent virus isolates (1966–1979), whereas the reference strain C/Taylor shows more pronounced differences. The results are consistant with the high degree of serological crossreaction amongst influenza C viruses isolated over a long period of time, a property which sets this group of viruses apart from type A and B members of the orthomyxoviridae.
