    Notes: Four corticosteroids were tested in vitro for effect on the proliferation of four strains of fibroblasts from scleroderma skin, four strains from normal adult skin and four strains of rheumatoid synovial cells.Significant effects on fibroblasts occurred only at the highest steroid concentration tested (10 μg/ml) where the inhibitory ranking of the steroids was clobetasol propionate 〉 clobetasone butyrate 〉 betamethasone valerate 〉 hydrocortisone. Hydrocortisone and betamethasone valerate stimulated proliferation of two normal strains, had no certain effect on the scleroderma group, and inhibited growth of synovial cells. Clobetasone butyrate and clobetasol propionate inhibited growth of all cells. All four steroids substantially reduced acid mucopolysaccharide secretion by scleroderma fibroblasts.These results suggest that fibroblasts from normal and abnormal skin show only small differences in their responses to corticosteroids in vitro, but contrast sharply with the mouse L-929 fibroblasts previously used in some assays of topical corticosteroid potency.

    Notes: Abstract The height structure of a thick-target solar hard X-ray source is predicted for a beam injected vertically downward with a power-law spectrum and dominated by Coulomb collisional energy losses. This structure is characterised by the ratio of hard X-ray flux from an upper part of the source to that from the entire source, and is essentially a function only of the atmospheric column density ΔN (cm−2) in the upper region. These predictions are compared with the flux ratios at 150 keV and 350 keV observed by two spacecraft for five events in which the solar limb occults part of the source for one spacecraft. In three events the occulting levels h ranged from 0 to 2500 km. For these the theoretical and observed ratios are found to be comparable for values of ΔN in reasonable accord with those found at these altitudes by optical and UV spectroscopic modelling of flare chromospheres. In one event the occultation ratio was observed to rise after the burst peak and it is found that this rise is consistent with an increase in ΔN due to conductively driven chromospheric evaporation. However the energy dependence of the occultation ratio is not consistent with that predicted by the model and it is concluded that non-collisional losses must be significant in beam dynamics. In the other two events, the occultation level h was ≳ 25 000 km. For these the energy dependence of the occultation ratio is comparable with the model predictions. However the values of ΔN required demand extremely high coronal densities and/or acceleration altitudes. Furthermore, the one observed evolution of the occultation ratio is entirely inconsistent with the model. It is concluded that in these, bremsstrahlung emissions other than that from a beam must be important.

    Notes: Summary The polypeptide hormone GIP has been localized ultrastructurally by using specific, monoclonal GIP antibodies and an immunogold technique on aldehyde-osmium fixed specimens of dog duodenal mucosa. A single type of cell showing round, homogeneous, fairly osmiophilic granules with closely applied membrane and a mean size of 188 nm±34 SD has been identified as the GIP cell.

    Notes: Summary A monoclonal antibody raised to gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP) has been compared with conventional rabbit and guinea-pig antisera to GIP. Four staining methods were tested and of these the peroxidase antiperoxidase (PAP) method proved to give the best results with both the mouse and rabbit antibodies. The monoclonal antibody, when used to stain pancreatic tissue, gave negative results whereas a distinct population of gut endocrine cells was readily demonstrable, suggesting that GIP is not a constituent of the mammalian pancreas. The monoclonal antibody was found to be the most sensitive for immunocytochemistry achieving the titre of 1:106 in rat gut. A C-terminal specific antibody, with a high affinity and avidity to GIP, it was clearly the preferred antibody for immunocytochemical studies.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of synchrotron radiation spectra is treated from the viewpoint of deconvolving the spectrum of ultrarelativistic source electrons from the observed photon spectrum. It is shown that for homogeneous sources the problem amounts to inversion of a Meijer transform with a modified Bessel finction kernel. A precise analytic inversion is only possible in the complex plane but Meijer transform tables are available for a wide range of functions. More convenient inversion formulae prove possible by use of a Laplace transform approximation or by analysing the spectra in terms of their integral moments. The filtering property of the transform is also established showing that the contribution to the synchrotron spectrum of high frequency components in the electron spectrum declines exponentially with their frequency. Thus, as with other Laplace-like transforms, only a few terms in an electron spectrum expansion can be deconvolved for any plausible noise level in the synchrotron spectrum.

    Notes: Abstract The inference of relativistic electron spectra from spectral measurement of inverse Compton radiation is discussed for the case where the background photon spectrum is a Planck function. The problem is formulated in terms of an integral transform that relates the measured spectrum to the unknown electron distribution. A general inversion formula is used to provide a quantitative assessment of the information content of the spectral data. It is shown that the observations must generally be augmented by additional information if anything other than a rudimentary two or three parameter model of the source function is to be derived. It is also pointed out that since a similar equation governs the continuum spectra emitted by a distribution of black-body radiators, the analysis is relevant to the problem of stellar population synthesis from galactic spectra.

    Notes: Abstract We present a classification scheme for solar flare models that utilize magnetic free energycurrents. The classification scheme is geometry independent and delineates models into two categories: those models utilizing currents flowing parallel to B and those utilizing currents flowing perpendicular to B. This delineation of drivers allows us to specify what kinds of plasma-magnetic field configurations should be expected for a given current driver. Further, the delineation of drivers will allow us to identify both the strengths and the weaknesses of the various models.
