    Notes: Conclusions The results of this study have shown that field studies can be used to develop statistical models for estimating the concentration of trace metals in seawater knowing the concentration of metals in the mussels. Although only about 50% of the variance of the soluble metal and about 20% of the metal as SPM can be accounted for by the models there is no reason to doubt that better models can be obtained in the future ff parameters which reflect instantaneous effects are included. Such parameters could be measurements of the freshwater input as reflected by salinity and turbidity measured with sechi disk readings. Obviously one of the important variables to consider is salinity as both DAVENPORT (1977) and PHILLIPS (.1976) have shown that this variable affects copper and zinc uptake. These parameters could help solve the problem encountered in this study in which a constant bias is seen in the results: low concentrations of metals in the seawater are overestimated and high values are underestimated. Nevertheless the models presented in this paper can be considered as a first step in estimating time-integrated concentrations of trace metals using easily measured parameters in mussels collected in a natural environment.

    Notes: Abstract Specimens ofMytilus edulis (mussels) were collected at one-month intervals over a one-year period from two locations in Burrard Inlet, British Columbia, Canada and less frequently from other locations in the S.W. region of B.C., and analyzed for concentrations of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br, Pb, and Sr using X-ray energy spectroscopy. Size and condition of the mussels were recorded at the same time. The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with size and season as predictor variables and trace metal contents as criterion variables. The values of the regression coefficients changed according to whether or not the mussels were collected from a polluted environment in disagreement with previously published studies. Principal component analysis of the correlation matrix of the variables yielded three principal components one of which can be used to ascertain whether or not mussels were collected from either a polluted or an unpolluted environment.

    Notes: Abstract Using X-ray energy spectroscopy concentrations of Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Br, Ph, Rb, and Sr were measured in specimens of the terrestrial gastropod, Arion ater, found in locations close to and far from a highway. Higher values of Pb and Br were observed for specimens near the polluting source and mathematical analysis revealed an inverse relationship between lead uptake and uptake of Cu, Zn, and Sr. The data are used to demonstrate a classification procedure in which trace metal concentrations in Arion ater are used to assess environmental quality.
