    Notes: Abstract Using the recently available exact computations of the scattering efficiencies of spheroidal particles numerical calculations of the extinction and polarization curves have been made for a distribution of particle sizes, shapes and orientations. The results are presented and compared with the observed interstellar extinction and polarization. Possible models for interstellar dust with nonspherical grains have been discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Gravitational settling of dust grains in dark clouds has been considered. It has been shown that such a process gives rise to a modification of the grain size distribution. Starting with a simple model of uniform spherical cloud and normal interstellar grain size distribution for the dust we derive expressions for the modified grain size distribution function, average grain size and extinction as functions of distance from the cloud's center and the age of the cloud. The mean grain size increases towards the center of the cloud as does the extinction. Results of the numerical evaluation of these quantities have been discussed with their implications for the observations of anomalous reddening and polarization within dark clouds and Bok globules.

    Notes: Abstract Near-infrared photometric and low-resolution spectroscopic observations of ε Aurigae at two phases during the current eclipse are presented. The eclipse depths are found to be wavelength-independent in the infrared right up to 2.5 μm. There is no infrared excess at wavelengths shorter than 2.5 μm. The light absorbing particles in the eclipsing body must be larger than 10 μm in size.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Sechs phenolische Aldehyde bzw. deren Oxime bewährten sich als ausgezeichnete Indikatoren für die direkte Titration von Eisen (III) mit DTPA bei pH 1,0. Die geringste titrierbare Menge beträgt 56μg/ml. Die Reaktion ist sehr selektiv und eignet sich für die Analyse von Erzen und eisenhältigen Drogen.
    Notes: Summary Fifteen phenolic aldehydes and aldoximes have been investigated as indicators for the direct titration of iron(III) ions with diethylene triaminepentaacetic acid. Six substances are found to be excellent indicators which permit direct titration of iron(III) with DTPA even at pH 1.0. Microtitrations are feasible with these indicators, the minimum titratable amount being 56μg/ml. The process is very selective and can be applied to the analysis of ores and drugs containing iron.

    Notes: Wood waste powder from Tectona grandis containing melanin was less susceptible to enzymatic hydrolysis than powder without melanin. About a 53% increase in saccharification was noted when melanin was removed. Melanin caused inhibition to all cellulolytic enzymes, but in different degrees. Endo-β-1,4-glucanase and β-glucosidase were markedly inhibited when melanin was preincubated with enzyme, while exo-β-1,4-glucanase was severely inhibited when melanin was preincubated with substrate. The latter was found to be dependent on the contact time. The activities of endo-β-1,4-glucanase and β-glucosidase were noncompetitively inhibited by melanin.
