Abstract A “central file” for use in infant psychiatric or maternal-infant intervention centers is described. By this term is meant a storage system by which scientific data, in the form of reprints, photocopies, and manuscripts, are sorted and made accessible to all levels of staff and visitors. Sorting by both author-classification and titleclassification is discussed. However, a special feature of the system is the provision of a section (sub-file) on bio-neuropsychiatry, to take account of the rapidly accumulating research reports on an area that seems to represent an emerging synthesis. Finally, there are notes and guidelines about the use of a mini-computer for further streamlining the “central file.” When computer-assisted, such file can serve as an immediately accessible data base for group discussion and casual reports; and it can form the basis for many research projects in the future.
